My #asco19 experience.
I was doing Hem/Onc rotation @UICHemOnc, it was memorial day weekend, Dr. Venepalli,GI oncologist, was the attending. Looking at my interest in oncology, she was kind enough to allow me to come on weekends.Prior to that weekend,I didn't know (1/n)
What @ASCO annual meeting was. She told me that the meeting was there next week @McCormick_Place in Chicago. This got me too excited. I was told the student registration was cheap. I checked on the website, it was like 350$ one week b4 meeting. Too much money for Student (2/n)
I was dejected, I decided to try my luck and sneak in. I was too active on Twitter prior to that and while googling for asco, I saw the #asco19 and looking deeper, it was fun. I found @marklewismd being super active. Replying to everyone, clicking pictures, I was like wow. (3/n)

Seems like this is the time to look back upon your year. Here’s a thread on my tweets from 2019 that I’d like to share again with the new followers. No particular order. Here’s the first one: medscape.com/viewarticle/91… I learned a lot by reading all the comments to this piece.

Karina Owen @MelanomaAus presenting practice informing data on therapy for patients w/ #melanoma recurrence on/after adjuvant PD-1. No responses to PD-1 rechallenge if first recur while on therapy. Use ipi, BRAF-MEK, or refer to a trial. Late recurrences, ?rechallenge. #ASCO19 Image
Would've posted the great chart of response rates by therapy and timing of recurrence but the simulcast app I use for screenshots can't correctly display slides with step-wise animations. @ASCO can we fix for #asco20?
Sorry for misspelling Carina's name!

Introducing #gerituzumab which reduces 90-day postoperative mortality in #gerionc by 57%. ⁦@MSK_GeriOnc⁩ got an audible gasp from the audience at the benefit of Geriatric comanagement in post-op pts #ASCO19 ImageImageImageImage
Question from audience: How were pts selected for gerituzumab? Answer: surgeons requested consultation; no formal frailty screening done. Nonetheless, baseline characteristics of those who received #gerituzumab were similar to those receiving standard-of-care surgeon-care-amide

Here is a summary of the @ASCO Minimal Common Oncology Data Elements (#mCODE) project ... in thread format
#ASCO19
1/ Problem:
#clinicaltrials continue to be the primary way to answer question in oncology but few patients enroll. Despite more data being stored in the #EHR, we can't easily combine data across systems as few are interoperable. This is a missed opportunity.
2/ Solution:
#mCODE is a newly proposed data standard that leverages and expands existing data standards to promote answering clinically meaningful oncology questions across medical records allowing us to learn from more patients

My only #ASCO19 Tweets will be in this thread. I will post a few abstracts of negative trials with and without positive spin. Things not to do as of June 2019.
This is somewhat obvious, but in case you didn't know, do not give rituximab maintenance for DLBCL. meetinglibrary.asco.org/record/174772/…
Despite these deceptive conclusions, do not use pembrolizumab in
HCC in the second-line setting. meetinglibrary.asco.org/record/173190/…

Landed in Chicago.

Opened email to find yet ANOTHER rejection.

Went to @artinstitutechi to cheer myself up before evening meetings at #asco19.

My manuscript is no masterpiece. But I started thinking: what if our greatest artists had faced the fearsome Reviewer #2?
