#PrideMonth #AbolishTheRegistry Fact 7:

Fact 6 looked at the history and intent of the SOR (Sex Offender Registry), showing it to be a money-making play disguised as a safety measure-

"Look, I don't care about that. I just want to know, does it work?!"

Well...define "work"
>>>
#PrideMonth #AbolishTheRegistry Fact 7 p2:

Today, the SOR exists as an unquestioned (behind-the-curtain) staple of the CJS.

There are >721,382 people publicly registered on the SOR (actual total believed to be over 900k).

But is this accurate? Are all these people dangerous?
>
#PrideMonth #AbolishTheRegistry Fact 7 p3:

Hardly. It's just an effective minority profiling tool, with incentive for excessive use.

After all, ATR Fact 2 showed us that children made up 25% of the SOR;
ATR Fact 3 showed us how PoC made up a disproportionate >33% of the SOR;

#PrideMonth #AbolishTheRegistry Fact 6:

If you read ATR Fact 5 (QT'ed if not), you saw the reality/risk of inhumanities the SOR (Sex Offender Registry) poses even for innocent people.

"But wasn't the SOR designed to keep us safe?"

That's what they say, but rewind and look...
>
#PrideMonth #AbolishTheRegistry Fact 6 p2:

To put the SOR and it's perversion into perspective, think about the War On Drugs.

In 1971, Pres. Nixon enacted a policy that promised to eradicate the drug abuse problem in the US. Sounds noble, right?

Well there was a problem...
>>>
#PrideMonth #AbolishTheRegistry Fact 6 p3:

1. The drug abuse problem in the US was blown out of proportion
2. The War on Drugs was largely ineffective
3. It established mandatory prison sentencing
4. It disproportionately targeted minorities
5. It cost taxpayers billions

I want to put this in perspective for my locals:

Imagine you're attending a convention. You're in the reg line to buy a ticket, but your card is declined. Turns out, you accidentally overdrew your account because you weren't paying attention.

Happens all the time, nbd, right? >
Well, before you can even explain that it was a mistake, the vendor stands up on the table and announces to the whole convention via megaphone that you're a dirty scam-artist who's not to be trusted.

The whole crowd turns on you. You try to explain, but no one listens.
>>>
You run home, embarrassed, scared; you've never dealt with anything like this before and you don't know what to do, so you wait it up and hope it will blow over.

But it doesn't.

That night, you get a call from the convention to find out you've been banned for life.

#PrideMonth #AbolishTheRegistry Fact 4:

So far we've seen how the SOR (Sex Offender Registry) is made up of 25% kids and more than 33% persons of color, but what about LGBTQ?

Why -is- this a pride month series?

Turns out the SOR is -also- a tool to attack #LGBTQ persons...
>>>
#PrideMonth #AbolishTheRegistry Fact 4 p1:

To understand how #LGBTQ are put at risk by the SOR, we must first understand "Romeo & Juliet" laws.

In short, R&J laws are a state-decided ruleset that protects teenage couples when one partner becomes an adult before the other.
>>>
#PrideMonth #AbolishTheRegistry Fact 4 p2:

Sounds fair and reasonable, right? I mean, R&J laws exist in half of the US.

Not exactly.

Firstly, consider the name: "Romeo & Juliet".

The law protecting teens from the SOR is named after an iconic cis-gender, straight couple.

#PrideMonth #AbolishTheRegistry Fact 3:

Last time we looked how kids/juveniles made up 25.8% of the SOR(Sex Offender Registry), but who else is there in disproportionate numbers?

Oh right, black men.

Coincidence? Nope, not in this corrupt system.
Let's dive deeper... >>>
#PrideMonth #AbolishTheRegistry Fact 3 p2:

A 2016 study by the University of Albany's Law Division showed 1% of all black men in the US are registered as sex offenders.

"But it's only 1%"

Well, per the 2016 Census, ~22.4million black men live in the US.

Let's add it up... >>>
#PrideMonth #AbolishTheRegistry Fact 3 p3:

What's 1% of the black male pop. (22.4m)?

1/100 = x/22,434,909 where 1% = x

That one percent is 224,349 people!

This means black men make up ~30% of the SOR (750,000 total registered people in 2016)!

#PrideMonth #AbolishTheRegistry Fact 2:

Many are aware of the Sex Offender Registry in the US, and many are led to believe that it keeps them safe - A lie used to militarize police.

But who is on the registry?

What if I told you it was more than 89,000 kids?

Let's explore...>
#PrideMonth #AbolishTheRegistry Fact 2 p2:

Yeah, that's right, the US has registered more than 89,000 children as sex offenders; many for being in consensual relationships with other kids their age.

But it doesn't stop there.

In fact, the US SO Registry is 25.8% juveniles.
>>>
#PrideMonth #AbolishTheRegistry Fact 2 p3:

"But I thought the sex offender registry was supposed to PROTECT children."

Actually, there's a higher chance your child will end up on the registry for a harmless act than they are at risk of being harmed by a registered offender.

#PrideMonth #AbolishTheRegistry Fact 1:

The vast majority of sex offences in the US are non-repetitive, and sex crimes have the lowest rates of recidivism.

The Mercado and colleagues 2013 study showed that only 5% of convicted offenders committed a new sex crime in 6.5 years.
#PrideMonth #AbolishTheRegistry Fact 1 p2:

Since the Registry opens a great potential for new felonies (specific to SOs) such as "failure to register", "loitering in a protected area", and "contact with another offender", general recidivism for SOs is forced higher.
#PrideMonth #AbolishTheRegistry Fact 1 p3:

This coupled with the fact that offenders on the registry are more likely to be denied housing and work can make crime the only avenue for survival.

These struggles push the general (non-sex crime) recidivism rate for SOs to 28%.
