Take 15 mins. Watch this video. It's more important to you than you know.

This is what China is doing, but Western governments are on exactly the same path #technologically; they just have a different set of #rationalisations.

The #DatabaseState isn't coming. It's already here.
It doesn't matter if your Government's #justification is #innovation ("AI is cool!"), #PublicSafety ("Think of the kids!"), or #efficiency ("People are expensive, let's use algorithms instead") - installing the #tools of #totalitarianism only ends up in one place.

It was true...
...of @ukhomeoffice's centralised #biometric National Identity Register - the heart of the #IDcards scheme in the 2000s - and is as true of @DCMS's "Identity & Attributes Trust Framework" 👇 of which the first 'adopters' include the #HomeOffice (again)...

Our new @PolicyInternet study draws lessons from France on the regulation of Internet pornography. We show displacement effects, circumvention & legislative scope may limit the efficacy of French attempts to prevent <18s accessing online porn:

France’s Article 23 puts it at the forefront of attempts by democratic states to restrict young people's access to legal online pornography. Unlike UK's #OnlineSafetyBill or @mivillej's @SenateCA bill, France's Article 23 has already been enacted.

French media regulator @Arcom_fr has, initially, been using the law to target 8 dedicated pornographic websites. So, how much are French adolescents exposed to pornography on those sites? And how much on other sites & media platforms?

Erm. Sounds like @thetimes has been talking more to Tony than Dom. The 'proposals' (actually a consultation response) are an incoherent mess.

@DCMS never once mentions GP registration - for which proof of #ID is not required; #NHSnumbers work fine...
thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/d… Image
...and while eliminating a bunch of "#PapersPlease" checks might be welcome, it won't if replaced with #GovernmentID checks; digital signatures have existed for years.

Successive Gov'ts have abjectly failed on #AgeVerification, despite what's available:

And, if this *is* a Cummings 'master plan' then he's literally fallen at the first #OODA step:

So if a kid in Darlington whose parent is on benefits, downloads @torproject to access non-AV pornography outside the UK, the household should be stripped of computers, tablets, phones, and "digitally shunned" with no access to services?

Oh wait, @MatthewPFirth deleted it: Image
Someone must have had a word with @MatthewPFirth because a lot of his tweets have suddenly gone missing?

Fortunately I have screenshots of practically everything. Image

Could @LibDemLords / @LibDems / @OpenRightsGroup please tell Lord Clement-Jones that #AgeVerification was "kicked into the long grass" by British Civil Society as being illiberal & misconceived; and that the "pornography industry" were embracing it?

I speak as a lead striker for one of the teams which is responsible for putting #AgeVerification into "the long grass", viz @OpenRightsGroup

#AgeVerification plans are halted, says @NickyMorgan01. That's great news for the privacy of millions of UK citizens who access adult content.

The plans were extremely bad, and would have opened a market prone to user tracking, profiling and of course, leaks.
@NickyMorgan01 There would have been a steady stream of scams, blackmail emails, and credit card theft sites all thanks to this half-baked scheme.

We should all be very thankful that it is paused, dropped, scrapped, for now.
@NickyMorgan01 However: I can't help thinking the fight will not be over. A number of organisations like the NSPCC are very committed to this policy. The AV companies will be very upset.

Are they going to simply walk away from this?

Expecting a *very* interesting report on @SkyNews from @rowlsmanthorpe at 7pm about #ageverification and the #pornblock news.sky.com/story/watch-sk…
Related to this story: here we have a provider "opting out" of the @BBFC privacy scheme, because of "digital wallets": medium.com/@18PlusApp/why…
That is to say, "bundled services". This is interesting. However you look at it, the @BBFC's privacy certification scheme and the lack of consultation around it is making it look shaky.

The @BBFC #AgeVerification "Certificate Standard" has been published.

This is the document which is being proffered to protect the facts & details of _YOUR_ online #Porn viewing. Let's read it together!

What could possibly go wrong?

ageverificationregulator.com/assets/bbfc-ag…
@BBFC Well, that was fast:

"this is the foundation of the non-statutory, voluntary age-verification certification scheme (the Scheme)"

"Only age-verification providers that meet the requirements of the Standard…will receive certification"

What happens to the ones that don't?
@BBFC [ Incidentally, I am going through this in real time with a mug of coffee, so there may be some jumping back and forth. Don't expect perfection. ]

Can we trust the porn industry with personal data?

@mindgeek owns the biggest #ageverification product.

It lost:

* 1 million customer records in 2012
* 800,000 customer records, card details in 2016
* Delivered malware ad attacks

wiki.openrightsgroup.org/wiki/MindGeek/…

#BBCBreakfast
So @DCMS @DCMS_SecOfState and @margot_james_mp answer with a "voluntary" privacy code.

Why voluntary? Why do some people deserve privacy more than others?

#ageverification needs *compulsory* regulated. We must not wait till a data breach damages careers and lives to fix it.
1.8 million customer records exposed by @mindgeek is a lot more than 300 emails from @DCMS #BBCBreakfast @ageverification

Looks like #ageverifcation launch date is about to be announced: will @DCMS and @DCMS_SecOfState say anything about REGULATING for privacy, or just tell us how good their VOLUNTARY privacy scheme is?
Let's be completely clear: this is a GOVERNMENT scheme. If your privacy is in jeopardy: it is @DCMS and @DCMS_SecOfState who are to blame.

They chose not to legislate. They chose to have a voluntary privacy standard.
#ageverification dangers are obvious, from outing people to ruining careers and even suicides.

What porn you watch can be very sensitive information. It's striking that MPs don't seem concerned, it's not like public knowledge about watching porn has never impacted an MPs career.

THREAD: QUESTION FOR ALL SECURITY PEOPLE — in this day and age, would you buy a single-vendor IT security solution which advertised itself as "the gold standard" for data security protection?

Would you give that claim any credence whatsoever?
The infosec world has a long-established term for such glib claims: "Snake Oil" - this terminology goes back to the 1990s or earlier, for vendors who were selling sub-par cryptography as "military-grade" or other supposed but meaningless description interhack.net/people/cmcurti…
Particularly telling for "Snake Oil" are the words and phrases that are used to describe the security solution, process, or tool, its development, mechanism, or vendor:

* "Trust Us, We Know What We're Doing"
* "Unbreakability"
* "Military Grade"

BREAKING: Age Verification Guidance published, due to be in Parliament imminently—linked from “Details” on this page: gov.uk/government/pub… #ageverification
My quick reading of this: @BBFC and @DCMS have conceded the argument that AV for porn is potentially dangerous and needs strict controls to protect privacy, but can only suggest "voluntary codes".
While stricter, voluntary standards are welcome, they are not the same as legally enforceable standards. @OpenRightsGroup may have won the policy argument, but @DCMS don't want to trouble themselves with tightening legislation.
