Robust ties with #Qatar are part of #Pakistan's overall close strategic relationship with #Gulf/#GCC states. The internal Gulf crisis had little impact on #Islamabad's relations with Gulf states, and there's no juggling act, unlike the common perception. Ties are not zero-sum.
#Qatar's pledge to invest up to $22B in #Pakistan in coming years, on the heels of multibillion-dollar #KSA/#UAE/#Kuwait investments confirms #Gulf is of paramount economic/political/security importance for Pak, and #Islamabad is rightly involved in Gulf security arrangements.

#Pakistan informed #Iran at highest levels in the past few weeks that #Tehran needs to do as much to ease tensions as other parties should. For example, easing of #US sanctions should come with Iran reducing support to proxies in #Yemen/#Syria. #Iranian officials asked #Islamabad
..to openly hold the #US responsible for current tensions in #Gulf. #Pakistan said tensions are a shared responsibility & all parties can do more to reduce hostilities. Pakistan has assumed responsibilities to secure international navigation in Northern Arabian Sea
just at the mouth of Strait of #Hormuz. #Pakistani naval vessels are patrolling the region and cooperating closely with #Oman #UAE #US and other allies. Pakistan is still reeling from the daring attack of May 11 on #Gwadar which was followed by #Fujairah next day & then #Saudi

I watched the entire proceedings of #OICMakkahSummit for about 8 hrs, and live tweeted at @Office_AQPk interesting tidbits & observations. Here's some observations on PM #ImranKhan's speech. /1

#AhmedQuraishi @AQpk
PM #Pakistan #ImranKhan was well received at #OICMakkahSummit. #MBS, King of #Bahrain, Pres of #Iraq, PM #Bangladesh, informally interacted with him. #Saudi hosts opened doors at holy sites for only two leaders this time: President Al-Sisi of #Egypt & PM Khan of Pakistan. /2
PM #ImranKhan speech was among the long ones at #OICMakkahSummit. It was extempore. Many Muslim leaders didn't get to speak due to paucity of time. Immediately after PM's speech, Secretariat asked leaders to keep remarks short. PM's speech was among the well delivered speeches./3

#AhmedQuraishi @AQpk
King Salman: I thank President Erdogan for his leadership in previous session of the OIC Summit.

#OICMakkahSummit
King Salman: #Palestinian issue remains the central question at the heart of OIC's work. We reject any illegal change in the status of Al-Quds/Jerusalem. The Palestinian people will receive our full support to achieve their legitimate rights.

#PTM #MohsinDawar
#PTM #PashtunRejectStateTerrorism

At #Kashmir contact group of #OIC, #Pakistan links the conflict to #Israel & #Palestinians. This is a routine practice that needs review. The OIC has a separate mechanism to deal with #Palestinian-#Israel conflict. In that mechanism, no country links Palestinian issue to Kashmir.
While rightly supporting #Palestinian just cause, #Pakistan should introduce the principle of diplomatic reciprocity on #Kashmir. In principle, linking Kashmir to other conflicts that are different in nature/history brings no ostensible benefit. @AQpk
#Pakistan should strongly take a stand on independent #Palestinian state at the high-level #OIC mechanism for #Palestine. The Contact Group on #Kashmir should exclusively focus on this conflict without distraction.

The aerial dogfight over #Kashmir skies between #Pakistan & #India air forces in February expose one stark reality: #US hardware beats #Russian & #Chinese air combat technology. This is what gave an edge to Pakistan over India, besides better #Pakistani training & preparedness
Important point about #Russian air combat technology defeated in #Kashmir dogfight in Feb 2019 b/w #Pakistan & #India. This technology has a role in the #Chinese development of JF-17. #Pakistan has access to this tech & to #US F-16 tech. Can study both.
The #Kashmir dogfight between #Pakistan & #India, in Feb 2019, will impact for years to come the debate over #Indian & #Pakistani military modernization & the competition between & the performance of #American #Russian & #Chinese air combat technologies. #AhmedQuraishi @AQpk

Pakistan welcomes the re-election of India PM Narendra Modi to a second term. He makes Indian history. In this #thread, I explain why Islamabad is pleased to see #Modi win & how a historic opportunity emerges to resolve #Kashmir, make peace./1

During the dogfight over #Kashmir skies in Feb 2019, when a #Pakistan-#India nuclear war became a possibility, unprecedented international diplomatic intervention diffused tensions & averted war. But unlike previous crises, many things changed this time. One: world listened to
#Pakistan this time instead of just listening to #India. The 6-times smaller country was always smothered under the attention that India received globally. This time, #NewDelhi overreached, crossed int'l borders to conduct airstrike inside Pak. Strike failed, pilot captured.

A revival of Pakistan-US strategic partnership. Situation in Afghanistan, Asia, and Gulf is leading to this. This is a chance for both to repair ties. Islamabad can regain influence lost after Cold War. #Thread by #AhmedQuraishi @AQpk
It is important for US interests in the region & for Pakistani interests that these two countries revive their strategic coop on equal footing ASAP. The US & PK, who won in Afghan war four decades ago, are on the retreat today thanks to regional players pushing a US & Pak defeat.
#Iran & #India have revived their 30yo plan of pulling Afghanistan out of American influence & failing Trump's Afg peace/pullout project. New Delhi & Tehran are working to end any Pakistani role in Afg peacemaking. #Chabahar is a key component of this project, and so is scuttling

With #US sanctions on #Iran, this is the time for #Pakistan to squeeze #Tehran on #IRGC's destabilization inside Pak+alliance with #India in #Afghanistan+#Chabahar. #Islamabad should leverage IRGC's use of Pakistani markets/ports for smuggling and evading
#US sanctions. #Pakistan should not look away this time as it did during #Iran-#Iraq war in 80s when #IRGC used Pak facilities to dodge sanctions. Let's remember how the Pasdaran, who are #India's allies in Iran, bluntly threw Dr AQ Khan under the bus in 2003 creating the biggest
crisis for #Pakistan's nuclear program, and how #Iran joined #India diplomats in openly lobbying #China to end #CPEC part of #BRI bcz "#Balochistan is not safe" while sponsoring terrorism to ensure #Beijing changes its mind. This is the moment to isolate

PM #ImranKhan conducts effective+innovative visit of 'Religious Diplomacy' to #Iran. #Tehran's role in #India's policy of containing #Pakistan & role of groups using Pak soil agst Iran, loom large. My observations in this #Thread./1 #AhmedQuraishi @AQpk
Four main questions emerge from #Pakistan PM #ImranKhan's #Iran visit:
1. Are #Pakistani groups committing terror in #Iran?

2. Will #IRGC stop terrorism inside Pakistan?

3. Are Pakistan & Iran equally responsible?

4.Was PM's visit helpful?

/2

#Thread by #AhmedQuraishi @AQpk
Fact: There are no #Pakistani groups committing terrorism in #Iran. All #Iranian groups run by Iranian citizens who move across Ir/Pk/Af border triangle. No state effectively controls this area. Main hideouts of Iranian grps are inside Iran, supported by Iranian citizens /3

#OrmaraMassacre in #Balochistan & #Iran's role in terrorism in #Pakistan, in pursuance of a joint strategic project with #India. /1

Two days before the emergence of #Iran's role in #Ormara attack, #Karachi police busted an #Iranian terror cell assigned to destabilize #Pakistan's business hub. /2

The busting of #Iran-backed #Karachi cell & role in #Ormara attack shows #Tehran has not stopped its anti-#Pakistan activities after the busting of #ChabaharTerrorNetwork, a joint project with #India, in 2015. /3

'#Baloch terrorist organizations' is a misnomer and a dangerous term that should not be used in official and media lexicon in #Pakistan. It risks creating permanent fissures in #Pakistani society. /1

#Thread by #AhmedQuraishi @AQpk
In its letter to #Iran embassy on anti-#Pakistan terrorism emanating from #Iranian soil, #Pakistani MFA referred to '#Baloch terror organizations' twice. MFA is not alone in doing this. Variations like 'Baloch terrorists' are common in our public discourse. /2
@AQpk
The term '#Baloch terror organizations' & its variations risks making a permanent association between '#Baloch' & '#terror', & the link must be disturbing for the ears of #Pakistani Baloch & insensitive to their feelings. /3

#Thread | PM #ImranKhan did the right thing by owning #PTM. This one move destroys the designs of regional actors hoping to exploit legitimate grievances of a segment of #Pakistanis. Here's why it's good. /1

#AhmedQuraishi @AQpk
Misguided or not, #PTM consists of young & educated #Pakistanis. The grievances are real, result of decades of political failures of #Peshawar & #Islamabad, and parties like #ANP #PPP #PMLN. /2

#Pakistani politicians failed to build on successful anti-terror military operations in #FATA. #PakMilitry had to enlist help of #UAE #EU #Japan #KSA to build schools & roads. Precious time was wasted in political squabbles. /3

#Pakistan should de-link #Palestine & #Kashmir, and #Israel/#India, in its foreign policy dictionary.

The foreign policy overhaul should cover this subject smartly, rationally, and with focus on maximizing #Islamabad's gains and limiting losses. /1

#AhmedQuraishi @AQpk
We in #Pakistan have grown used to casually mentioning #Palestine/#Kashmir & #Israel/#India in a way that hurts our position, limits our options, and leads us to inaccurate conclusions and policy positions. It's more emotion and less logic. /2

@AQpk
#Palestine & #Kashmir are two different conflicts/disputes legally & politically, with separate trajectories, solutions & end results. Pal/Isr reached peace agreement & recognized each other in 1994; differ now on implementation. Kashmir is invasion/occupation/annexation./3
