To counter some of the disappointing & predictable responses to heroic #protests in #Iran, incl in #academia, I share my recent essay which calls on academics to avoid undercutting dissident #feminist voices, incl those of #Muslim heritage

Concepts like Orientalism & Islamophobia, originally responding to realities of past & present subordination, are now sometimes used by Western critical intellectuals to discipline those who exercise their equal right to be critical of their own contexts..

I’d love to be just glad about all the help for refugees from #Ukraine all over Europe right now but I just can’t. Being involved in the movement against border violence since 2015, I am watching this and I want to scream. A thread. 1/6
In 2015 I witnessed how teargas was shot on people fleeing the war in Syria in #Idomeni. I saw fascist groups “protecting” the borders in Poland and other countries of the Balkans. 2/6
Alan Kurdi has been only one of thousands who drowned and for a second it seems like civil society cared. But instead of opening the borders and create a safe passage to Europe, #Frontex got their budget increased and the EU Turkey Deal got implemented. 3/6

Spoke to @Guardian podcast about growing up in post-War #France... that is post-#Algerian War of Independence, still v. much in living memory. The War’s legacy is perceived in all kinds of aspects of modern life, still blighted by the #colonial experience.
A point that is easily overlooked by foreign observers is that the 2nd most influential party in #France now was founded by far-right nationalists who wanted to keep #Algeria French. #LePen's FN -now called the Rassemblement National -is openly racist, islamophobic & antiSemitic.
In his '#Separatism' speech @EmmanuelMacron was sugar-coating #reactionary policies based on the premise that 5-6M French #Muslims can’t be trusted to manage their own affairs & required surveillance at all times. The emphasis was that Islam is a chronic #problem around the world

Just received this horrible video which is claimed to be a showing #Chechen militias who had invited their fellow brothers to commit Jihad in #Dijon, #France!French Special Forces put an end to the ethnic clash among #Chechen, #Algerian & #Albanian heavily armed gangs last night!
This is #Dijon yesterday, gunshots can be heard after deployment of #RAID (#French Police Unit) which is a tactical Elite unit. It is reported that #RAID has put an end to the ethnic clashes which was started after #Algerian drug dealers stabbed a #Czech 16yrs old teen to death.
This is said to be for yesterday. #Chechen people from across #France & probably its neighboring countries traveled to #Dijon to confront the #Algerian drug dealers & wipe-out the city from criminals but this led to ethnic clashes which went out of Police control for two days!

Please be advised that this Twitter account which is reporting news about #Libya National Army operations is not related to #LNA & is probably being run by someone with lack of knowledge about #LNAF! #LNAF has No operational MiG-25 or combat capable Mirage F1! Image
The only mission capable & operational fighter jets of #Libya National Air Force are MiG-21, MiG-23 & Su-22. The MiG-25PDs & RBs have No value for #LNAF to be restored due to the fact they are high altitude reconnaissance jets & interceptors! Their spares are rare to find! ImageImageImageImage
The only source of MiG-25 spare parts is Zaparozhie Aircraft Repair Plant from #Ukraine which had the last stock of its spare parts sourced from #Azerbaijan for #Algerian Air Force two years ago! Without such spare parts None of these MiG-25s can fly! ImageImageImage

#BREAKING: Video shows Algerians protesting #Turkish government in Sabiha Gokcen Airport of #Istanbul over being unable to return #Algeria this afternoon! #Erdogan brought 2,500 Algerians to #Turkey in-order to send them illegally to #Greece as refugees. Now they want go home.
There are also hundreds of tourists among them who are stuck in #Istanbul airport for over ten days without water, food & their luggage because of the decision of #Turkish government for banning all flights to #Algeria. They all were forced out of the terminal by police.
They are human beings, but #Turkey is throwing them away like garbage. After 10 days being stuck in the Terminal, #Turkish Police viciously attacked them & forced them out. They even have their luggage confiscated for 10 days! No change of clothes, shower & hygiene tools

I have stood under a podium on which Gaddafi conducted a news conference where I asked him the first question, at an event just outside of Tripoli in 1996. Tell me, did you meet or report on Gaddafi?
In 1996, I was a Reuters correspondent in #Cairo. I went to #Libya to cover the 27th anniversary of the “Green Revolution.”I don’t have access to the Reuters articles I wrote from #Libya but here are some opeds I’ve written about Gaddafi the dictator and the hypocrisy of the West
#Gaddafi’s quirks should never have distracted from his abysmal human rights record. Arbitrary arrests, a muzzled press, a ban on political parties and the squandering of #Libya's oil wealth have never been laughing matters for Libyans. washingtonpost.com/archive/opinio…

Police have fired teargas to disperse tens of thousands of demonstrators marching through central #Algiers against Abdelaziz Bouteflika’s bid for a fifth term in office, the biggest protest in the #Algerian capital since the Arab spring. google.com/amp/s/amp.theg…
Other marches in cities around the country including Oran, Constantine, Sétif, Tizi Ouzou and Bouïra drew thousands more angry at the ailing president’s attempt to prolong his 20 years in power, local media reported.
Nahla Djabi, a marcher, said the protesters were heading “towards the central post office, and from there the presidential palace. The atmosphere is very relaxed, there are plenty of families, women, children. It’s calm for the moment. It’s very joyous. We have hope, a lot of hope”

I refer to Zohra Drif in my new book. Read about this Algerian freedom fighter who made “the choice, like other sisters, to be volunteers for death – not for surrender” & joined the Algerian nationalist movement, the FLN to fight vs French occupation opendemocracy.net/victoria-britt…
Drif ends memoir “with thought that’s tormented her for...years,‘the fear that the living, esp our youth, might forget the sacrifices made by our people – that they might forget the price paid for Algeria to be free & independent & therefore forget how it must always be defended’ Pic of book: Inside the Battle for Algiers: Memoir of a Woman Freedom Fighter” by Zohra Drif
Drif was condemned to death for her role as a soldier in FLN.Her memoir is a“remarkable testimony of the extremely courageous role women played inside the armed wing of the #Algerian nationalist movement.”She was released by 1962 Evian agreement which brought Algeria independence
