Also for YEARS the National Autistic Society’s young Autistic ambassadors have tried to get them to make a statement against PBS therapy and to STOP funding it and hiring ABA/PBS therapists but so far they’ve had zero luck. #autism #autistic #ActuallyAutistic #allautisticstwitter.com/i/web/status/1…

1. Oh was yesterday #AutismAwarenessDay? Dang. I missed it. Instead I stayed off of social Media and spent a lovely day with my #ActuallyAutistic family not waving jigsaw pieces around, turning blue or spreading misinformation around that makes money for charities.
2. Later on I did a 3hr workshop on #AutisticMasking to 400 lovely Danish people with @DrAmyPearson. I missed #AutismAwarenessDay yet still somehow managed to pass on a shitload of useful & practical #Autism knowledge to a shitload of people
3. Its strangely like there's no need to have #AutismAwarenessDay, #AutismAwarenessWeek, or #AutismAwarenessMonth because for many Autistic people every day is, week and month of the year where we put out immensities of useful & productive #Autism information in various forms.

Today is #AutismAwarenessDay. At the age of 12 I was diagnosed with Asperger, a form of autism. At that time I had no idea what it meant. When I and my parents told people I was autistic, they always reacted with shock since I didn’t fit into the stereotype of autistic people.1/7
Today, so many (especially girls) remain undiagnosed. The reasons for that are often lack of awareness, prejudices and the fact that many still see autism as a “disease” or something that has to hold you back. 2/7
That more people are diagnosed with autism etc isn’t because there is an “inflation” in diagnoses but since awareness is increasing and many highly sensitive people experience stress related problems in modern society which gives them reason to suspect they’re on the spectrum.3/7

The rate of Autism has grown rapidly over the past twenty years. Autism is the fastest growing, yet underfunded developmental disorder.
On this #AutismAwarenessDay, please make it a personal goal of yours to research more, learn more, and find out ways you can help support the Autistic community. Some of the most brilliant minds in our nation are a part of the autistic community.

I am still beyond honored to have an essay in this collection. Mine's a short piece, so I’ll give you the highlights of how I moved from #AutismAwareness to #AutismAcceptance. However the rest of the essay are the meat of the #neurodiversity matter. 1/
All Done #AutismAwareness: There’s a saying we overuse in my household: “All done, [X]!” We’ve actually swiped the saying from our son Leo, who is Autistic, as “all done” is what he proclaims when he is completely fed up with the activity or person at hand. 2/
Personally, I am “all done #AutismAwareness.” I don’t think ‘awareness’ is useful. If my loud, handsome #autistic son is in the room, you’ll probably be aware that he’s there — but that awareness doesn’t place you under any obligation to support or understand him. 3/

Today is World #AutismAcceptanceDay! (Or, to some, #AutismAwarenessDay). This means you’re probably being firehosed by autism information. But how do you know if an #autism organization is a trustworthy one? Fortunately, we have guidelines & examples:

thinkingautismguide.com/p/position.html 1/
At TPGA, we believe autistic people of all ages & abilities deserve to be treated with respect, have their civil rights & humanity recognized, & have access to the resources & accommodations they need. We will not support #autism orgs that do not abide by these basic precepts. 2/
We know it can be difficult to identify #autism orgs that legitimately work towards the best interest of #autistic ppl & their families, as questionable autism organizations tend to employ the vocabulary of acceptance & support—even when actively undermining those principles. 3/
