Long šŸ§µabout this ā¬‡ļøand about #Autism. Something too many charities, activists & celebrities have been quick to ignore in favour of promoting the 'if they say they are, they are' narrative. It really isn't that simple. @genspect @BayswaterSG @Glinner @LuxuryMoon @RooneyRachel 1/
Many detransitioners realised that autism may explain their gender dysphoria. 2021 research by Elie Vandenbussche showed 54% of detransitioners have at least 3 co-morbid conditions with the 3 biggest: Depression, Anxiety Disorders & PTSD. 20% had an ASD Dx & 28% suspected.
ASD detransitioner Elizabeth Hawker suggested 'we are witnessing a new wave of common misdiagnosis of #Autisticgirls emerging; Gender Dysphoria' Tony Attwood says 'many girls...with Asperger's Syndrome have described...how they think they have a male rather than female brain' 3/

I had no intention of speaking about this on here, but seeing as as I'm still getting attacked by GC trolls over stuff I said - NOT about individuals - in 2020 here it is.

As an autistic adult, here is a concept I thought of that would have REALLY benefitted me and prevented burn out. (Every autistic is diff, though!)

šŸ«¶using ā€œmaskingā€ to the childs benefit. Allowing them the power to be themselves, while also getting by in an NT world. šŸ§µ#autism
Ex: ā€œHey, B. We are going to the grocery store. And youā€™ll have to __wait in a line__ and you probably donā€™t want to! But you are special. (*Use whatever term you want-fairy, superhero, princess.*) and you have to try your best to blend in with everybody else while there.
BUT when you come home, or feel safe enough to, you can take the mask off and be yourself. if you need help while out, let me know.ā€

As the child ages, you would reframe and have the concept grow to work with them. Never hiding their autism, or treating it as ā€œbad differentā€

I spoke briefly (terrifying but worth it) at #LetWomenSpeakBirmingham yesterday and although I'm worried about any backlash particularly loss of clients and work etc, I'm glad I did. As an #autistic woman who has been parroting the gender woo for a while now, I'm so worried
About what is happening in #autism services and to #autistic kids as revealed by @hannahsbee (her book was a real turning point for me, its evidenced, balanced and free of ideology) I had intense issues with my body as a pre teen. I couldn't cope with the changes of puberty. I
Can totally see the appeal of rejecting all the societal bullshit that comes with being a female, especially when you're also #autistic and moving through the world is hard enough. Except, we can't ever really reject it. 'Top surgery' and Pronouns won't take away dysphoria, or

1/ I've been thinking about my status as a neurodiverse educator: I'm #ADHD, and on the pathway for an #autism diagnosis. There's not a lot of discussion about what working life is like for neurodiverse educators, so I'm doing my own research and I plan to discuss it here. šŸ§µ
2/ I'm going to start with a core tension the neurodiverse face: the DOUBLE EMPATHY PROBLEM.
3/ According to Milton (2012), cognitive neuroscience and other psychological paradigms donā€™t acknowledge the divergence and difference in social reality between autistic people and the ā€˜neurotypicalā€™.

@lyssasphere The Buddha experienced his awakening approximately 500 years before the birth of Christ. What he awakened to was the presence of birth, old age sickness and death. When he really saw all these aspects of life he left a privilege existence and became an ascetic.
@lyssasphere \2
He became disillusioned with the spiritual life of the ascetics. One night he sat beneath the Bodhi (awake) tree vowing not to arise until he knew wtf was going on. And he observed the suffering of all sentient beings.
@lyssasphere /3 According to the story, the Buddha realized what he understood could not be taught. So he remained silent. Some ascetics, who had known him, were amazed at his transformation, and asked him to teach them. And he taught for the next 40 years.

What causes autism (and is this really what we should be focussing on)?šŸŖ”

A substantial focus of autism research has been on its causes rather than ways to improve our lives.

However, as some have theorised 'gut bacteria' to be a cause, I think it may be useful to share what research has found.
The causes of autism are not properly understood, but strong evidence points to genetics. Additional, inconsistent, and limited research suggests environmental and neurological factors may also play a role.

Iā€™m confusedā€¦ because I see parents label themselves as ā€œautism momā€ and I get offended by a neurotypical person using their childā€™s diagnosis as an identity.

Feel free to explain it in detail
Self-identification is valid

I love your weird just the way you are

Tell me about your favorite things

Rules of Engagement #WorldAutismAwarenessDay 1) foster #AutisticAcceptance 2) Believe us when we say, Puzzle Pieces DO NOT help promote #AutisticAcceptance (Dig Deeper into the very problematic history of Autism organizations to understand why)
3) Avoid using toys or childhood images to represent #Autism. #Autistics are #Autistic and will remain as such. We are #DifferentNotLess. When you use toys to represent us, it infantilizes our authentic Ways of Being. Use Rainbow Infinity or Gold Infinity symbols instead
4) Always take an #Intersectional approach to understanding #AutisticTruths. We are from all faiths, cultures, gender identities and more, but our experiences are dramatically impacted by how the world sees our diverse layers of identity and whether we are multiply marginalized

What if I told you that so many things you think are bad or distasteful or need fixing in Autistics are actually neuronormative myths?

As an #Autistic psychotherapist, I can tell you that the following pieces of how we might be are actually quite fine and healthy.
šŸ§µ
Eye contact. Eye contact doesnā€™t make you a better person. It doesnā€™t make you honest or calm or kind. Eye contact isnā€™t culturally consistently polite. It doesnā€™t indicate mental health or connection. Ask my blind friends who do both those things just fine. Stop chasing my eyes.
Socializing with small talk, parties, vaguely, in groups of three or more, about the weather, in order to ascertain social hierarchy, w/ nonconsensual touch is not qualitatively better than connection through parallel play, infodumping, monologue, shared interests, time, or art.

Integrating ABA into #maintained & #academy, #mainstream & #SpecialSchool for "affordable" "positive outcomes". It concludes, "School-based models, such as Leicestershire's, provide a sustainable model which can be used with a large number of children for...little extra cost."

thereā€™s a few things I thought were important to talk about that me and other advocates in the community have been discussing. It seems that in this community if you do one thing wrong then thereā€™s nothing you can do to stop people coming after you despite apologising
and publicly and learning from what you did wrong. Itā€™s almost as if you get bullied and chased out of the community and thereā€™s no recovering from if as people wonā€™t let you. That isnā€™t okay. It pushes people out of the community and isolated them.

Whoever invented dressing up for world book day was not a working parent. I have SEWED a dress at 7am, found&lost again red hairband x 3, one autistic meltdown due to non matching top/bottoms and I feel about to have a stroke. #WorldBookDay
As a consumer of thousands of books I am a massive book fan and in fact #WorldBookDay is a lovely idea to raise awareness of reading, although I imagine thatā€™s what schools do anyway? Reading?
Massive parental social media contest into who got the best outfit. Kids bewildered. Wonder if the creator of world book day got home from work at 10pm last night after 14 hours.
