🧵 In 2018, my cousin & best friend Alex Schachter was killed by a gunman with an AR15 in Parkland. I am sick & tired of congressional inaction. On June 6th, I will sit-in at the US Capitol to demand a vote to #BanAssaultWeapons. I invite others to join me. Image
If we all come together, we can put enough pressure Congress to vote on an assault weapons ban. Currently, they would rather play political games and accept blood money than save our lives. Aren’t you tired of waking up to the news of another massacre? Have you had enough yet?
If you have ever turned on the news and wondered how the hell these mass shootings are still happening in this country, this is your opportunity to do something about it. If you are still sitting on the sidelines, you are part of the problem. Join me starting June 6th.

This thread will address Mass Shootings and Homicides.

I will illustrate:
-Laws and Gun Control has no Impact
-The Number of Guns has no Impact
-Age is irrelevant
-Race is irrelevant
-Enforcing Law and order is the key to solving the problem
1/15
Additional Laws have no Impact if Law and Order is not enforced.
The Laws Biden want at a National level are incl below

Illinois has 7 of these laws in place and Maryland 8

Yet their homicides per 100,000 is 54%>Florida and 38%>Texas.
2/15
Mass Shootings BY AGE of the Shooter

Changing the minimum age won't solve the problem.

Politicians are ignoring the facts!

Two years ago today, a white supremacist used an assault weapon to murder 51 people at two New Zealand mosques.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern immediately moved to ban assault weapons.

Meanwhile, in the U.S., we continue to suffer senseless massacres using these weapons.

Time and time again, assault weapons are used in the deadliest mass shootings in America.

They are a weapon choice for America's mass shooters because they are uniquely lethal, allowing the most murders in the shortest amount of time. #BanAssaultWeapons Image
In shootings in which assault weapons or high-capacity magazines are used, 155% more people are shot and 47% people are killed compared to those without them.

These weapons of war have no place in civilian hands. #BanAssaultWeapons bradyunited.org/fact-sheets/wh…

1) We have changed the conversation dramatically since the Sandy Hook mass shooting tragedy in 2012. Gun control was barely mentioned in 2008 or 2012 Elections but now ALL 19 Democrat Presidential candidates support an assault weapons ban! @nytimes

2) In 2013, a few months after 20 children & educators were killed by a gunman with an AR15 in Sandy Hook, 30% of the Democratic caucus in the Senate voted against the assault weapons ban. nytimes.com/2013/04/18/us/… @nytimes
3) Now, the biggest disagreement between the Democratic Presidential candidates is whether people who already own those assault weapons should be required to sell them to the government, or simply given the option to do so. #BanAssaultWeapons

Assault weapons are weapons of war, used by soldiers in active conflict zones.

They have no place in civilian life.

The inventor of the AR-15 designed this gun for the battlefield. Not for hunting. Not for target practice. For active combat.

Thread on Risk and Death Calculations (or why I don't worry about selfie stick deaths) : I'm skeptical about McConnell's "front and center" promise but important to note what McConnell is even willing to address is just breadcrumbs, a small piece of what we face. 1/
In security risk planning, we focus on high likelihood/high consequence events because that is the obligation of government. These are the threats that must be minimized before they happen and whose consequences must be limited should the event occur. 2/
Low likelihood/low consequence events are tolerable from societal perspective; we don't have enough bandwidth to treat as a priority. Think selfie stick deaths as people lean over cliffs for Instagram. They are sad, but after putting up a few signs, you can't worry about it. 3/
