Continuing my new series inspired by the CA wildfires. For weeks ashes rained down from the skies, the air became hazardous and all I could do was stay home and dream about being able to just breathe again. Image
Wildfires like these will only worsen with climate change. Earlier this year I saw photos of the Australian sky turn red from smoke blocking out the sun like the apocalypse. Then I got to experience that red sky here in California. ImageImage
Climate change is not some distant fable that may or may not happen to our children. It is happening right here right now and it's up to us to vote for the green policies that will save us from a future of ashes.

Firefighters have been battling some of the largest fires 🔥in California’s history in recent weeks. A fleet of specially equipped firefighting aircraft have been helping fire crews on the ground. Example from Aug. 22 👇
(THREAD)
#CalFire has its own fleet of aircraft that can reach most fires within about 20 minutes. The three main components are tactical planes, airtankers and helicopters. All have specific roles but work together as a unit to combat fires. Image
Tactical aircraft are used in aerial command and control roles in fighting wildfires, providing coordination with commanders on the ground and other aircraft in the sky. Most of Cal Fire’s tactical planes are North American Rockwell OV-10 aircraft. Image

I want you to know about #hotshots. Hotshots are the small, elite teams of on-ground firefighters who are braving the elements and fighting fires with shovels, chainsaws, and superhuman endurance. They work for the National Forest Service. #Fire
Here’s a good video showing what hotshots actually do for #fires. It is an amazing group of people, being taxed to the utmost by a catastrophic climate condition.
#Hotshots clear breaks, so fires have nothing to burn. They do this by hand, digging, picking, and raking, out in the wilderness. 16 hours a day, camping where they fight. And they set back burns to fight fire with fire. #fires science.howstuffworks.com/nature/natural…

Peeps, I want to bring up something that happened today. It will make you realize just how much these firefighters risk protecting you and your communities.

This situation took place on the #DolanFire earlier this afternoon.

A group of firefighters became trapped. With no other viable option they were told to deploy shelters. That's something you never hear...nor do you ever want to. [think Granite Mnt Men].

#ValleyFire #ElDoradoFire #ForkFire #BobcatFire.
Some did suffer injures and/or smoke inhalation so I want all of you to understand what they went thru & what they may face being a firefighter. #CalFire

Milpitas Fire Update

The Red Flag Warning for the Bay Area was cancelled this morning. This is good news for firefighters battling the SCU Lightning Complex fire burning to the east and south of Milpitas!

#CaliforniaFire #SCULightningComplex #wildfires #CalFire #Milpitas
We remain deeply concerned for those currently evacuated and the firefighters battling these very serious fires.
At this time, there are no areas within the City limits of Milpitas that are under evacuation watches, warnings or orders. However, residents in unincorporated areas east and south of Ed Levin Park remain under an evacuation order.

Movie I made from Mt. Hamilton, Lick Observatory real-time webcam showing the fires. Quieter now, but I hope that all stay safe and firefighters can save as many homes and historic structures as possible:
Note that occasional light flares just to the right of the dome are probably fire trucks and other vehicle headlights. Likely all fire on the adjacent hills though.
Update as of ~11 pm PDT. Some fire activity downhill to the left and also approaching closer from the hill behind the dome.

THREAD: how to help wildfire efforts. Because of my background, I’ve been asked for my recommendations of best orgs to help with #wildfire relief. #CaliforniaFires #CampFireSmoke #ButteCountyFire #CalFire #firefighters
2- my focus was NorCal because this is the vastly more disastrous area. And there are obvious choices like the Red Cross. That said, I was most impressed by two organizations that I believe are worthy of your support and will immediately put to use.
3- the first org is @NVCF they only use 1% to admin fees and are in Chico. They are on the ground helping and they also provide support for animals. Nvcf.org

Massive #WoolseyFire Began On Contaminated Santa Susana Field Laboratory, Close to Site of Partial Meltdown

🚨 Electric Substation at #SSFL Tripped 2 Minutes Before Fire Reported
The tremendously destructive #WoolseyFire has been widely reported as beginning “near” Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL or Rocketdyne), but it appears that the fire began on the #Rocketdyne property itself.

#CaliforniaFire A natural disaster (fires in California) + an inadequate response from the government + the air being dangerous to breath. Reminds me of the Chernobyl eyewitnesses stories that I edited in 2016. ironedcurtains.com/2017/06/07/bri…
Here you see a friend of mine, a young girl at a time, on her fathers' shoulders during a patriotic parade... breathing in radiation a few days after Chernobyl explosion. This is what happens when the government only protects its own interests.
I was around too, only 60 km from Chernobyl, a few months afterward. We just did not know as no one told us the truth. Trump's tweet this morning, threatening to defund California, in a way, if it is possible, is even more destructive than the response of the USSR leaders.
