Tonight, #Bulgarians watched the @TheBookerPrizes the way most people watch football – and I don't know if there are many a people who could boast that about literature. Time Shelter, by @Gospodinov68 translated by Angela Rodel @rodel_angela won the award. 1/
The International Booker win is important for #Bulgaria because this is the first time in history that the country has been nominated for any major award. Bulgarians, often described as people on Europe's periphery and a media cliché by this point, long to be noticed. 2/
.@Gospodinov68 has talked about coming to peace with being Bulgarian, about acceptance of one's national origin, because Bulgaria is a country deeply wounded by successive dictatorships and persistent corruption, haunted by its past and ashamed of its present. 3/

Do you agree or disagree with Ambassador Chip Bohlen’s statement that #Russia was unwilling to be a good neighbor in the global community after #WWII?

Did the Soviets start the #ColdWar, as Bohlen claimed?

Or was the West the aggressor?

Please comment below 👇🏼 Image
Declassified documents I’ve seen from both British and American intelligence indicate that WE were the aggressors.

OPERATION UNTHINKABLE shows us that even before the war was over, in April 1945, the Cold War had already begun — and Winston Churchill started it. Not Stalin!

India has been faced with many enigmas since its independence in 1947. One of them was managing relations with foreign nations. #India gained independence during the #ColdWar era. Nonetheless, India has managed to maintain strategic autonomy over the years.

1/4 Image
Perhaps the #Rigvedic hymn “Aano bhadra krtavo yantu vishwatah”, (let noble thoughts come to us from all directions) would be perfect to describe India’s foreign policy prospects in upcoming months of 2023.

2/4
Here are the seven events to look for in upcoming months:

1. #G20 Summit
2. #SCO Summit
3. Maneuvering relationship with #China especially Under newly appointed Foreign Minister Qin Gang
4. Dehyphenating the #US and #Russia relationship amid multilateral engagements.

80 years ago today, WE DIVE AT DAWN hit UK cinemas. A look at HM Submarines at war, this put British submariners centre stage, but it isn't the only depiction of the silent service on the silver screen...

🧵 1/11 Image
WE DIVE AT DAWN (1943) includes scenes of domestic life and boys' own adventure, but it was nautical realism that mattered to star John Mills.

He wanted to know what it felt like when a submarine crash-dived for real. He got his wish, turning green in the process.

🧵 2/11
This real-life experience and a believable set gave the film an air of authenticity, something shared by another 1943 releae, CLOSE QUARTERS.

A documentary feature, it received relatively little popular attention.

America’s efforts to block oil & gas pipelines from #Russia date back to #JFK, who pressured #NATO allies into an embargo of the Friendship pipeline in 1962.

This 2019 Radio Free Europe article on #NordStream2’s construction is quite telling indeed… rferl.org/a/us-efforts-s…
#JFK’s 1962 embargo on oil pipes and pipeline technology marked a foundational decision that became a template for future #USSR-USA conflicts, as shown by the embargo on pipeline technologies in the early 1980s by Ronald #Reaganʼs government to halt the Trans-Siberian pipeline.
Let’s go back to the summer of 1961, when — in the words of US delegates at #NATO — the main discursive line was that European countriesʼ Soviet oil & gas trade was allegedly imperiling the security the entire Western bloc.

The Friendship pipeline was a threat, the U.S. said.

In this classic speech from the year 2000, author and researcher John Loftus talks about the shocking discoveries he found in top secret CIA files about collaboration w/ #Nazis.

This led to Congress passing the #Nazi War Crimes Disclosure Act in 1998.
At 20 minutes, 45 seconds Loftus explains how the “Bush family fortune came from the Third Reich.”

Prescott Bush’s grandson, George W. Bush was running for president at the time.

Loftus’ book made the Bush campaign very uncomfortable 🥵 for a while… 📕
Loftus’ search into documents showing Nazi officers and sympathizers smuggled to the West as anti-communist informants led to his resignation from a federal Nazi-prosecution unit in 1981. That’s when he began his one-man probe into the government’s secret work w/ fugitive Nazis.

Officially, the property belonged to the US military. East Berlin #Stasi knew about the building. It was under surveillance and exposed in a media campaign, including the book "Ein Handbuch zur Westberlin-Frage" (1959) 2/3
It was seen as a "base of subversive activity against the German Democratic Republic and the other socialist countries“ 3/3

In the September 8, 1919 New York Times, the president of the Ukrainian Association of Jews warned US President Woodrow Wilson of the coming genocide that had already begun in #Ukraine.

He correctly predicted the exact number — 6 million — who would die in the #Nazi #Holocaust.
Image
Image
These crimes of 1918-19 were not committed against Ukrainian Jews by Germans.

They were committed BY Ukrainian nationalists who over the next 2 decades would join forces with Nazi Germany.

This was the forgotten Holocaust before the Holocaust.

200,000 Jews were slaughtered between 1917-21 in #Ukraine — by any metric, a genocide.

Yet these pogroms are not even talked about by the #Holocaust Museums in the United States and Jerusalem.

It is vitally relevant to what happened in #WWII, and in today’s #UkraineRussiaWar.

The sudden apparent blind selection of replacement capacity for the CAESAR 155mm howitzer in Denmark after the donation to Ukraine does not make sense. Denmark is forming a medium heavy infantry brigade and in NATO planning we are to deliver a heavy infantry brigade by 2032. 1/6
The French CAESAR system, which is an excellent wheel-based long range artillery system as witnessed in Ukraine, was selected due to specifications developed after our mechanized brigade capacity was dropped (2004) and prior to the decision to - partly - re-build the capacity 2/6
The specifications were developed prior to June 2012 when the army operated out-of-area in Iraq/Afghanistan and needed a deployable system. In December 2014 the Israeli system ATMOS from Elbit actually won, but due to political issues ATMOS was dropped in favour of CAESAR. 3/6

It’s May, 1945. #Nazi #Germany has just surrendered to the Allies.

But for the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), #WWII with #Russia never ended.

This film, produced by the “Ukrainian Galician Assembly” — is pure #Nazi propaganda but interesting indeed.

3 things to bear in mind as you watch this film:

* it was produced in 2015, post-Maidan coup.
* most likely funded by U.S. taxpayer dollars w/ Hollywood production values 💸
* made to impress Western audiences (in English language, not Ukrainian).
The elderly UPA vets brag about robbing, killing innocents, and being terrorists.

As they explain, these leftover #NazisInUkraine were merely “protecting” their Polish and Russian neighbors! 😮

But who protected the Poles, Russians, and Soviet Ukrainians from these thugs?

After his 1961 Vienna summit with Soviet premier #Khrushchev, #JFK jotted a private note to himself: 📝

Kennedy and Khrushchev tried to effect peace between America and #Russia. 🇺🇸🤝🇷🇺 Image
I recently interviewed historian Jim DiEugenio (author of the new Oliver Stone documentary & book “#JFK Revisited” about Kennedy and Khrushchev’s efforts to end the #ColdWar.

This pursuit of peace likely led to both leaders’ removal from power.

In his memoirs, #Khrushchev wrote how #JFK earned his respect:

“In the final analysis, Kennedy showed himself to be sober-minded and determined to avoid war. He didn’t let himself become frightened, nor did he become reckless. He didn’t overestimate America’s might.”
