Here's a proposal to solve the serious social and political problems in the #USA: #Partition.

Let's just use the 2020 Presidential Election Results as a basis.

Split the US to create two new countries, one for Blue America and one for Red America.

(1/) Image
The red states can be called URSA, or United Republican States of America, and the blue states can be called United States of Democratic America (USDA).

In blue states (USDA), #abortion would be a fundamental right; in red states (URSA), it would be illegal.

(2/)
#Evolution would be taught in USDA, #Creationism in URSA.

#Opencarry guns would be a fundamental right in URSA; the #SecondAmendment would be abolished in USDA; no private guns.

In URSA, there would be a flat tax rate of 10%.

In USDA, the #top1percent would pay 99% tax.

#OTD in 1862, #Confederate soldiers repulsed a massive #Union assault on the second day of the #Battle of #Fredericksburg. Wave after wave of Union soldiers were mowed down during a full frontal assault against Confederate troops positioned at Marye’s Heights. Image
After the Battle of #Antietam a few months earlier, General #McClellan allowed Lee's Army to retreat back to #Virginia to fight another day. #President #Lincoln then relieved McClellan of command and replace him with General Ambrose #Burnside. Image
Burnside quickly planned a fall offensive to move on #Richmond. However, the Union Army's operation faced logistical setbacks, allowing Lee to settle in at Fredericksburg. Burnside chose to attack Lee head on, a decision that proved disastrous.

For the past eight months, @juliawall_ and I have been following the course of the Black Lives Matter movement in Graham, the county seat of Alamance County, NC. The result is Sound Of Judgment, a partnership between @newsobserver and @propublica. newsobserver.com/news/state/nor…
The package includes a longform story, a 20-minute documentary and three additional videos, including an interview with Alamance County Sheriff Terry Johnson. We explore the perspectives of #BLM protesters, #Confederate loyalists and law enforcement. propublica.org/article/small-…
Definitely make time for the documentary by @juliawall_, made with invaluable contributions from @photojeskos, @sohailal_jamea, @almudenatoral, Mauricio Rodríguez Pons and narration by Sylvester Allen Jr. Some things you simply need to see in live action.

Thread: What do we know so far about the #war on #Tigray in #Ethiopia, which has been running for nearly 2 months now? In this thread I will sum up some of the key developments.
First, the so-called “law and order” operation, which @PMAbiyAhmed declared completed one month ago, has not yet reached its basic objectives, and it is doubtful that it ever will. Hence, the war in #Tigray will continue indefinitely, or until a political settlement is reached.
#Tigrayan forces, under the command of the elected reg. gov. of #TPLF, are still waging an active resistance war. Over the last few days, Tigray forces seem to be on the offensive, challenging #ENDF military control of the main routes (Mekelle-Wukro-Adigrat; Mekelle-Alamata).

Today right-wing activists and militias are converging on Stone Mountain Park in Georgia to hold a “Defend Stone Mountain” #Confederate rally.

Antifascists are gathering to oppose them.

Here, III% activists gather about a block East from Antifa, loading and prepping guns. ImageImageImageImage
I spoke to III% Security Force militia leaders Chris Hill about his group’s plan for today.
I asked Chris Hill about the disarray on the right after Stone Mountain closed the park itself. He said he’s only responsible for his own group and not sure about other right wingers gathering elsewhere.

“We’re locked, cocked, and ready to rock,” he says.

The Right Wing & #Confederate Monuments: A thread. The fierce public clash over the nature & legacy of these monuments in 2019 underscores why so many right wingers embrace Confederate iconography. 1/

For many on the Right, the Confederacy embodied conservatism's core tenant that privilege for the ruling minority rests on the subjugation of the powerless majority. In other words: rights for me, but not for thee. 2/
The Confederate experiment was the logical end-point for 19th-century conservatives: an independent nation that unequivocally protected racial slavery, because slavery was
the practical application of the white supremacy on which that nation was founded. 3/

The @TXSBOE has gaveled in. Chair Bahorich says live stream is down, so I'm glad I'm here in person!

First up today is public testimony on the changes to the social studies curriculum. 35 people have signed up to speak. #txlege #txed
@TXSBOE Some curriculum changes have gotten more attention than others.

Yes, Helen Keller and Hillary Clinton (both recommended, not required, to be taught) are on the chopping block.

But there are DOZENS of other proposed changes too.

Shall we appease this cult impeccably? Let us muster outside and swing dark bells while chanting “shame” at the very material. To cleanse it properly in fire, we must smelt our own dignity for a chance to see molten racism spill to our feet like evil lava.

... Today is the day to find the spine. You will not like these people better down on your belly. We must not lose ourselves by groveling for forgiveness from a horde of social terrorists who insist their own genitals are a thought experiment.
