2022 was a year of horrible bloodshed for many countries.

1️⃣ #Ukraine 🇺🇦

After nearly a year of fighting, there is no end in sight for the war in Ukraine.

The West should continue its balancing act of backing Kyiv while avoiding a direct clash with Russia and keeping the door open to negotiations.
2️⃣ #NagornoKarabakh 🇦🇲- 🇦🇿

Neither Russian nor Western-sponsored talks have brought the sides closer to a sustainable agreement and clashes have continued.

The failure of talks could well result in renewed war.

2022 brought new wars and the continuation of old ones. But it also brought some real advances in the protection of civilian rights. Here are ten of the most important, many of which involved efforts from @CeasefireCentre over the last 3 years:

This is the story of how Belgium’s Leopold II colonised, exploited, murdered, enslaved and maimed the people of the Congo - and how Brussels’ dark past is catching up with it today.

1/ The best place on @Twitter to learn about energy related topics is @Mining_Atoms. But in this thread, I will specifically dive into @Tesla’s battery supply chain.
The results are surprising. I love driving a Tesla, but am I impacting the environment in a positive way? Image
2/ The key determinant of cost for any EV is the battery itself. From 2010 to 2021, the cost of a lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery fell from $1,200 per kWh to $132 kWh

East African leaders have agreed to assemble troops to combat armed groups in the eastern Democratic Republic of #Congo #DRC.

What is this joint force and what are its objectives?

@PMvandeWalle takes a close look in our latest Q&A.

[Thread] 🧵👇
crisisgroup.org/africa/great-l…
The East African Community (EAC) @jumuiya is composed of #DRCongo 🇨🇩, #Tanzania 🇹🇿, #Kenya 🇰🇪, #Burundi 🇧🇮, #Rwanda 🇷🇼, #SouthSudan 🇸🇸 & #Uganda 🇺🇬.

The EAC’s joint force was designed to respond to the rampant insecurity in eastern DRC, a serious concern for the entire region.
Cyclic violence, displacement and insecurity due to the presence of armed groups has been plaguing the region for almost 30 years.

Yet an actual deployment of a regional force is unprecedented.

.@PMvandeWalle and I went to #DRCongo to understand how U.S. sanctions affect peace there. We went as part of @CrisisGroup’s ongoing research on sanctions in conflicts around the world. Takeaways from our trip, a 🧵. /1
There are many sanctions in the DRC, on many kinds of people, for many alleged offences. The U.S. imposes some unilaterally, while others are joint efforts by the U.S. and EU, or the UNSC. All are broadly designed to promote peace and security. /2
Specifically, the sanctions target mineral smuggling, election meddling, corruption, human rights abuses, and other acts perceived as prolonging the 20+year conflict. Sanctions lists include former electoral officials, generals, police chiefs, armed groups, businessmen & more. /3

The UN monitoring team has published its 29th report on al-Qaida and the Islamic State. Over the past years, the monitoring team's analytical reports have developed into key sources on militant groups. This edition is no exception. Here's a summary of the report.
On Central Africa:
The report concludes that member states still don’t see a direct command line between the IS leadership and the group in #Mozambique. Although the group in Mozambique has experienced setbacks, the report says it appears to be “displaced rather than defeated”
The report estimates that ISCAP has between 600-1200 fighters in #Mozambique mainly consisting of locals and foreigners from #Tanzania and the #Comorros

The Joe Biden administration has restored Magnitsky sanctions against Israeli businessman Dan Gertler for 'extensive public corruption' in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Image
undoing a secretive and illegal measure taken during the Trump administration's final days. Dan Gertler was granted a license five days before Donald Trump left office, allowing him to access money frozen in US banks and transact with financial institutions all over the world.
Unless he has been able to use this window to move his assets out of the US, Gertler may be regretting the millions he spent on lobbyists in Washington, DC, including Alan Dershowitz, who represented Trump in his first impeachment trial, and former FBI director Louis Freeh.

According to local authorities, at least 24 people were killed in three separate attacks that took place overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday in the provinces of North Kivu and Ituri, both in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
According to local authorities in Beni, on Tuesday evening, rebels assaulted the village of Kisima for the first time, killing eleven civilians and then torching a few buildings.

The same attackers later launched an assault near downtown Oicha,
shooting two other civilians to death before fleeing into the nearby forest. According to civil society in Beni territory, the results of these two attacks are still provisional as some civilians have not been found since the attack on Tuesday.

One thing my work with @sbmintelligence does is take me around #Nigeria (well, as the organisation has grown, others do more of the field travelling).

In the course of our work, we have come across IDP camps, official and unofficial, in almost all states of the country.
There is one major reason why we have so many internally displaced people in #Nigeria - security, or a lack of it.

Our country has the 7th largest number of internally displaced people in the world, behind #Syria, #Colombia, the #DRCongo, #Somalia, #Afghanistan & #Yemen.
On our current projections, if nothing is done to arrest the spiralling violence, within a decade we'd be third behind the #DRCongo and #Colombia.

These people need help, and one organisation that is doing good work in that regard is the Abuja-based @Globalrightsng.

Interesting new blog post by Margaret O’Callaghan arguing that mines in #Zambia’s North-Western Province do not constitute a 'new Copperbelt':
copperbelt.history.ox.ac.uk/2019/10/21/why…
The argument is unconvincing though. O’Callaghan argues that new developments do not resemble the historical mining industry on the Copperbelt as the ore grade is low, copper is extracted in open pits and mining has not been accompanied by infrastructure development.
All these are features of the Copperbelt in #DRCongo though, where lower-grade ore has been mined in open pits since the 1910s. Infrastructure developed there was also relatively minimal and the province wasn't even connected to the rest of Congo.

The third paper is Francesca Pugliese on safety policy and culture in Katanga's contemporary #mining industry
#ASAUK18
Pugliese found that miners have actively embraced mine safety policies because they feel it is not a disciplinary system.
#ASAUK18 #mining
Pugliese: more complex safety procedures (which you might assume miners would reject) have given miners a sense of certainty and safety in what is an inherently risky situation.

We have fourteen (?!) papers to get through on African occupational structures in our session. First up, Leigh Shaw-Taylor presents his overview paper showing continent-wide trends in labour structures in an astonishing time of less than two minutes. #WEHC2018
Next is @JohanFourieZA on the need to disaggregate occupational trends in South Africa by race and region, as aggregate trends do not show underlying economic shifts. #Mining employment is relatively small despite SA's status as a major mining economy. #WEHC2018
Now we have Filipa Ribeiro da Silva on #Mozambique. Rise of the colonial changes causes major changes in male occupational structures, but little change in the female occupational structure. This creates pronounced and persistent gender differences in the economy. #WEHC2018
