Gun violence prevention is not a partisan issue; it’s an American issue and a moral imperative. Lawmakers in Congress and across the country must implement and expand proven, common-sense reforms that can be immediately put to work to protect our children and communities.

I want to applaud @POTUS for taking another step toward reducing gun violence and making our communities safer. This Executive Order will increase the number of background checks conducted before a firearm sale takes place. #endgunviolence
The EO will also keep more guns out of dangerous hands by increasing the effective use of “red flag” laws, strengthening efforts to hold the gun industry accountable, and accelerating law enforcement efforts to identify and apprehend the shooters menacing our communities.
Baltimore has something to say about tackling the issue of gun violence. In 2022, we seized more guns than in any other year since 2014. Notably, 2600 weapons were seized, including 485 ghost guns. Homicides are down 23% and non-fatal shootings are down 26% year over year.

11 people were killed after a gunman opened fire in #MontereyPark and 7 were killed in #HalfMoonBay.

In this moment of grief and frustration, I’ll explain the whole scope of these recent tragedies and what we can do to prevent them. 🧵
The nation was rocked when CA had to deal with two mass shootings just one day apart from each other.

This tragedy comes days after brand new CDC data crunched by @bradybuzz shows 2021 had the most mass shootings and gun deaths in recorded U.S. history.
bradyunited.org/blog/cdc-data-…
Every day in America, +300 people are shot.

Some of these tragedies make the news, but most of them do not.

They include unintentional shootings, domestic violence, suicide and more.

5 beautiful lives were taken in a shooting at Club Q in Colorado Springs just past midnight on Sunday, and many more were injured, as they were either working or enjoying a night out. 5 lives who would have been joining family members and friends at Thanksgiving dinner this week.
Victims of the shooting at the LGBTQ-friendly club include 2 bartenders, the mother of an 11-year-old girl, and 2 other clubgoers enjoying a carefree night before a lone gunman started firing: Kelly Loving, Daniel Aston, Ashley Paugh, Derrick Rump, and Raymond Green Vance.
Once again lives have been taken as the result of gun violence & cut short because of hatred. & it’s not only these 5 people that were impacted, but everyone else injured, everyone who lost a loved one, & the community that must now grapple with this violent act so close to home.

Yet another tragic mass shooting with a weapon of war waged this time, like at Pulse against the LGBTQ+ community. Hate + guns = death. #EndGunViolence nytimes.com/live/2022/11/2…
Please God, help the victims, and condolences and prayers for those who died . Gratitude to those who subdued the killer and to the emergency responders..
This begs the question; how much more before weapons of war are banned on the streets, in our schools, in churches, supermarkets and nightclubs?

📍HIGHEST FIREARM HOMICIDE IN 50 YEARS—from 2020 to 2021, the % of homicides from firearm increased from 79% to 81% resulting in the **highest % for gun homicide in more than 50 years**! Age 25-44 also has the worst rate of gun homicide. #EndGunViolence

2) An increase of 8.3% gun homicide in just one year is also absolutely insane if you think about it. In just one year!

3) African Americans by far had the highest rate of dying by gun homicide. Often more than 10-20x higher rate than non Hispanic Whites.

PROFITEERING—“Schools that install safety pods can see an increase in revenue due to higher enrollment, as parents feel secure in dropping their children off at schools that offer greater protection from active shooters”. Only in America. 🤦🏻‍♂️ #EndGunViolence
2) this shit is REAL. my next reaction — will rich private schools that can afford these dystopian bunkers be able to buy enough for all kids? If not, will teacher have to choose which kids get bunker protection and which do not? It’s messed up.
The gun-industry propaganda that “the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun” is completely destroyed by the shocking #Uvalde school videos — and by the testimony of these brave kids who watched the police do nothing for 77 minutes.

Last month, Congress passed the first gun violence prevention legislation in 30 years and proved that bipartisan solutions are possible.

But the Highland Park tragedy quickly reminded us that we can’t stop there. We have so much more to do if we want to end this crisis.

1/
In order to reduce America's gun violence epidemic and set the stage for generations of progress, we must:

1. Fix our unjust democratic systems
2. Expand the Brady Background Check System
3. Uniquely address and treat the many sources of gun violence bradyunited.org/reports/legisl…
Gun violence goes beyond the catastrophic mass
shootings that make the front page. It is a public
health epidemic that profoundly impacts millions
of Americans every single day.

With over 40,000 people killed with guns each year, we cannot wait another minute to demand action.

💡Let this sink in—guns now kill more Americans between the ages of 1-24 than motor vehicle accidents. ➡️Before guns took the lead, vehicle accident deaths was once the leading cause for 60 years. Not anymore. #EndGunViolence
economist.com/graphic-detail…
2) After more than 60 years in which motor-vehicle crashes were the leading cause of death for young people, guns now kill more Americans between the ages of one and 24. In 2020 more than 10,000 young Americans were killed by firearms, up from just under 7,000 two decades earlier
3) Regulations on guns have been loosened in much of America over the past 20 years. A bill that aimed to introduce universal background checks on gun sales failed to pass the Senate in 2013.

Alright FELLOW PARENTS, LISTEN UP.

I have had ENOUGH. And i know you probably have too.

Yes, I am talking about the repeat trauma in Chicago yesterday, on a day that was supposed to celebrate the joy of living in this great nation. 1/N
Each death was a preventable casualty, if only WE had acted a little bit swifter. A little bit sooner.

Adninistration will only ever have data on deaths. Deaths and open wounds, the number treated for the wounds that bleed openly?
2/n
But what about the unseen wounds? The wounds in babes too small to express their grief in words? The wounded hearts of all the people left destroyed and heartbroken with the TRAGIC. UNNESCESSARY loss of their loved ones?

Bulletproof blankets during active-shooter drills in American schools—yet meanwhile, some claim kids wearing masks in schools is too “traumatizing” for kids.

Firearm injury is now the LEADING cause of pediatric mortality in the U.S. This does not have to be the case. We demand that our political leaders take immediate action.
Gun violence is a complex issue requiring a multi-faceted public health approach. There is no single simple solution. There are many actions that we can all support and we make the following updated policy recommendations:

In the wake of the #Uvalde shooting, I’d like to contribute by stating what should be obvious: more guns equals more gun deaths. This is true at all levels of analysis and can help guide the policy conversation on reducing gun violence. Here is a🧵with receipts, so bear with me:
First, the home. “Having a gun at home is a risk factor for adults to be shot fatally (gun homicide) or commit suicide with a firearm.” There are many other rigorous studies like this one that show similar findings.

sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
Next, neighborhoods. Here is a study from Newark on illegal firearm access, but there are others in places like Detroit that similarly show more guns equates to more deaths.

Dear #LaborMovement: it’s time for us to wake up. Just about every single mass shooting, of course, happens in *somebody’s* workplace - whether perpetrated by a former colleague, a deranged terrorist or anyone else. (1)
Imagine the world we could live in if we’d joined hands and followed where @rweingarten tried to lead us after #SandyHook: a world where responsible gun owners could still take their teenagers hunting and protect their homes, but very, very few had access to weapons of war. (2)
A world where children didn’t have to practice hiding under their desks. A world where a coworker might be fired, but nobody worried that they would return to the office with an AR-15. A world where people went grocery shopping and were confident they would come home alive. (3)

Today 14 children and an educator were shot and killed at an elementary school. I survived a shooting almost ten years ago. Although mass shootings get a lot of press, the majority of gun violence happens outside of them. Trigger warning. Sensitive content in the next few tweets.
For every 110 American killed by a gun daily, 3 times as many survive with lifelong consequences. I am one of them. This was me in a coma with tubes going into my chest and some that you can't see draining fluids from the cavity where my organs were.
Gun violence is also a financial burden. After I was released from the hospital, this was how much I was billed. Not counting the months of physiotherapy, lost income from not being able to work, and all the time my family had to take off to take care of me. I was lucky.

.@TheJusticeDept announced they are investigating the #Buffalo shooting as an act of "racially-motivated violent extremism."

This shooting is an unfortunate reminder that domestic terrorism is a very real threat across America. #DisarmHate 🧵
Just last year, Attorney General Merrick B. Garland + Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas said the greatest domestic threat facing Americans came from “racially or ethnically motivated violent extremists.”

Domestic terrorism has been a growing issue across the country for quite some time and it’s not going away anytime soon.

According to @washingtonpost, domestic terror incidents have surged.

Adding guns into this mix should worry Americans.

A @teamtrace article reveals the NRA has pressured lawmakers to block the collection of critical gun ownership data.

The NRA is clearly aware of what this data will show — more guns equal more violence, and we need gun violence prevention solutions.🧵
thetrace.org/2022/05/nra-la…
Without research, it is difficult to develop new solutions or revamp existing solutions to prevent gun violence.

We can only improve these efforts if we have adequate data and research.
bradyunited.org/blog/biden-har…
The NRA is fully aware of that.

For 20 years, the NRA backed Dickey Amendment was interpreted to ban federal funding for gun violence prevention research.

It wasn’t until 2019, that Congress appropriated federal funding to study gun violence.

The Biden-Harris Administration took executive action to prevent firearm suicide, which accounts for nearly two-thirds of all gun deaths in America. These new actions put proven solutions to work, helping reduce firearm suicide and save lives.
