"In March 2023 the #Forest #Conservation Amendment bill was plaed before the LokSabha. Ms Prakriti Srivastava,IFS (PCCF #Kerala) & I jointly wrote a submission to the Joint Parliamentary Committee, link provided at the end of the (long) thread. 1/n
highlighting the imp pts:
Fundamental changes in the proposed bill:
a)Limits the scope & ambit of the original FCA (1980), removing crucial safeguards from a vast majority of India's #biodiverse rich #forests, thereby opens the floodgates for diversion for other uses
2/n
b) Undoes many provisions of the existing #ForestConservationAct; c) dilutes the 202/1996 #SupremeCourt ‘Godavarman’ #judgement, overturns its #conservation gains
(d) facilitates privatisation of forests to create plantations
e) shifts focus from conservation of forests to 3/n

Pygmy Hog is the tiniest, rarest and the most #endangered of all wild #pigs globally. In fact, phylogenetic analysis of the pygmy hog revealed that it belongs to a separate genus, Porcula. It is evolutionarily unique and completely different from #boars, #warthogs, and pigs.
2/13
Known to once thrive in the lush tall and wet grassland plains of the sub #Himalayas, they were feared to be extinct in the 1960's but were “rediscovered” in the year 1971.

Here is a list of 45 #birds, 22 #mammals, and 30 non-avian #reptiles that are CRITICALLY ENDANGERED due to feral or pet #cats
#invasivespecies #conservation #ornithology #BiodiversityCrisis
pnas.org/doi/pdf/10.107… Image
first off, I'd like to highlight that "feral #cats on islands are responsible for at least 14% global #bird, #mammal, and reptile extinctions and are the principal threat to almost 8% of critically endangered birds, mammals, and reptiles"
onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.11…
AND within our own lifetimes, North America has lost more than one in four of its birds. These are not all critically endangered now, but these trends are pointing to #extinction

A thread about record low #endangered Interior Fraser #steelhead. The intent of this thread is to educate people on the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada's consistent habit of both destroying these fish while simultaneously editing/hiding science.

#BCpoli #CDNpoli
1/n
Steelhead pops in the two best monitored systems (Chilcotin and Thompson rivers) have gone from thousands to an estimated 19 (yes, 19) and 104 respectively. These are all-time record lows.
2/n
The neat thing about steelhead is that unlike other anadromous fish such as salmon they do not die after spawning so they can spawn more than once. Generally speaking, older fish = bigger fish = > fecundity = more babies in the water and hopefully more adults returning.

As always, context matters! This only applies to Australian Humpback whales. Other populations are still listed as #endangered by the USA & all are in @CITES Appendix I. The @IUCNRedList assessed Humpback whales as a Least Concern species for #conservation abc.net.au/news/2022-02-2…
I also find this interesting because I often see people who study #conservation & #WildlifeTrade argue that CITES and US Endangered Species Act listings should all mirror the IUCN Red List assessments. But I doubt the same people would agree when it means removing protections...
Necessary Reminder: Each of these 3 systems are independent processes because each serves a unique purpose. They can overlap & feed into one another, but to assume they should always agree is to misunderstand the policies & processes they represent #WildlifeTrade #ScienceTwitter

1. What comes to your mind when you hear 'Chambal'?

Daku/dacoits - right?

Up to the early 2000s, organized crime controlled Chambal across MP, Rajasthan, Haryana, and UP.

Today we talk not of extinct dacoits, but endangered wildlife.

"Stranded turtle bones reveal divergent life-history characteristics for critically #endangered #hawksbill #seaturtles inhabiting US waters"

Global #hawksbill pops. declined >80% in the past 100yr. Study of immature🐢was recently identified as🌎priority. Hawksbills typically inhabit🌴coral reefs but juveniles also forage in subtropical US waters➡️Texas & Florida. Yet, little is known about their ecology in the US

To address this knowledge gap, we studied the growth layers, #stableisotopes & #traceelements in the🦴of 94 US-stranded turtles (1989–2012). This led to new data on:
1⃣ stage duration (oceanic vs. neritic)
2⃣ size-at-age relationships

Getting lost in the crowd can be a problem when you’re an #endangered sea lion pup. Taronga behavioural ecologist @PitcherBen & collaborators are decoding #Australian #sealion communication to understand how mothers and pups recognise each other in a busy colony #ScienceWeek
Australian sea lions use a combination of sound, sight and smell to communicate and recognise their pups. Mothers can use the size and colour patterns in pup coats to help located their offspring in a colony royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/pdf/10.109… @RSocPublishing #AnimalCommunication
Smell is critical to recognition. Mums will smell pups they encounter while searching the colony to confirm which pup is their own offspring. Each sea lion has a unique smell and mums learn the odour of their pup sciencedirect.com/science/articl… #AnimalCommunication

Check out our latest preprint: the relevance of pedigrees in the conservation genomics era bit.ly/3wCO7DH. TLDR: it’s not either/or when it comes to #pedigrees & #genomics. Having both helps researchers address more conservation questions than one data set alone. 🧵 1/10
Conservation #genetics 🧬 has developed a substantive toolbox 🔧 to inform species management. While much discussion has been dedicated towards genomic advances, there remains one long-standing tool in #ConGen that is often overlooked: the pedigree. 2/10
Pedigrees have been used to understand and manage diversity in threatened populations for decades. But, caveats like assumed founder relatedness, missing data, and errors can make them tricky to use. See Forsdick et al (ecoevorxiv.org/7bnjw/) for more. 3/10

An unpopular thread on B.C.s raging forest fires.

Much of B.C.'s interior is a fire maintained ecosystem.

Tree ring research shows fire intervals of 5-20 years in much of it which fire suppression starting 100 years ago and getting really good starting in the 1950s.

1/n
Our plants, trees and wildlife all evolved with fire. Fire rejuvenates grasslands and plant communities and is an essential part of functioning and productive habitat for native species such as , moose, elk, mule deer and sheep, plus the growing list of #endangered species.

2/n
A number of these populations are in decline/at record lows; fire suppression plays a central role. Fire suppression results in more fuels on the forest floor and ladder fuels from young trees growing in areas where they shouldn't be, putting people and biodiversity at risk.

🦈WHALE SHARK🦈
#Whalesharks are the largest fish in the sea, reaching almost 19m! They are one of only three filter-feeding shark species, the others being the megamouth shark and basking shark. They use gill filters to catch plankton, jellies and small fish. #Sharktober
We usually think of filter-feeding as happening automatically as the animal swims with its mouth open, but whale sharks are actually very active hunters. They use active suction to catch small animals near the water's surface. #Sharktober #whaleshark
#Whalesharks typically prefer tropical and temperate open oceans, but their slow migrations often bring them near shore to feed. These aggregation sites, including #SouthAfrica's southern coast, often benefit greatly from #ecotourism as a result of these beautiful visitors.

⬆️ benefits from wildlife = improved views & actions toward wildlife, right?

Common assumption for #CommunityBasedConservation, but not many studies that assess these relationships

We 👀 at these links using the case of #Endangered reticulated 🦒 in #Kenya 🇰🇪

We are excited to share our pub in #EvolutionaryApplications bit.ly/2GH3tzr comparing relatedness estimates for pairing recommendations in critically #endangered #birds from #Aotearoa #NZ 🇳🇿. See this #SciComm 🧵 for more! #Conservation #Genomics #ConGen #ConSERTeam 1/13
Around the 🌏, #conservation breeding programmes strategically pair the least related individuals to enhance recovery. This is like #Tinder for threatened species, only more information goes into pairing than swiping ⬅️ or ➡️. See my #3MT for more! 2/13

It’s important to get the relatedness value right for pairing, because mating between close relatives can result in negative fitness consequences, like ⬇️ hatching success 🐣(see bit.ly/3b4IILO). 3/13

Thing I’ve been hearing a lot recently: “Real Time Fish monitoring should dictate when the CVP & SWP export pumps are turned off to protect #endangeredspecies. See fish-pump off...no fish-pump on”.

There is *so* much wrong with this, it will require a #thread to unpack.
2a) Real time monitoring is not individual surveillance. Ecological monitoring will always miss individuals, esp. for rare species. (ie, we call it “sampling” & use statistics).

Monitoring will likely miss rare species & the early/late migrants that populations depend on.
2b) This point — the need to maintain life history diversity to prevent declines — can’t be overstated. Just protecting a narrow slice of these species’ diversity is a recipe for further decline & loss of resilience.
