We recommend reading @CCriadoPerez's Invisible Women, about the ways policy development & impact assessments fail to assess the impact on women.

Equality Impact Assessments matter.

We have asked @TeamQEH to correct their EIAs to include the 4 missing protected characteristics. Queen Elizabeth Hospital NHS Trust Equality Impact Assessmen
Despite now having the correct list of protected characteristics in V3 of the @TeamQEH Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Policy, the policy & EIAs do not cover those with the protected characteristic of sex as it uses the word “gender” instead of sex. >

#IWD2023 #SexMatters
. @TeamQEH was informed of these errors first in 2020 and has failed to correct the omissions and use of gender and transgender in the #Equality, #Diversity and #Inclusion policy and equality impact assessments ( EIAs). >

You know that just saying "Self ID doesn't have any impact on the Equality Act" over and over doesn't actually MEAN it doesn't have an impact on the Equality Act, don't you? It VERY obviously does to anyone who can join dots. Pretty sure the EHRC & equality experts agreed.
Affirmations and mantras don't change hard reality, I'm afraid, or the fact that other people in diverse societies have rights and needs that matter too. Saying isn't being. A bit like just saying "I care about equality, inclusivity, human rights, fairness and diversity"
meaning diddly squat if you demonstrate continually that you don't in fact care about or understand any of those things at all when it comes to anyone at all in society who doesn't identify in the way you find edgy and fashionable, doesn't come from the exact same background,

#GRRBill Stage 3 Debate (Day 2)
Group 13: Interaction with the #EqualityAct 2010, the concept of sex, and single-sex services.

I'm gonna need some gin after this I think 🥴
Hamilton (Con) pressing the matter of recent @ForWomenScot judgement and impact on the #GRRBill.
Robison (SNP) states there are no changes to any protections under the euqlaity act. The bill does not amend the EA10. Judicial ruling doesn't impact the bill.
Thomson also pressing.
@ForWomenScot Stating that the #GRRBill doesn't alter the EA10, therefore not relevant, apparently.
"Bill provides reassurances that this doesn't modify the EA10."
Robison saying it's unnecessary to pick apart EA10 because it would be "confusing" and not needed.

Dear @Keir_Starmer in order for you to ensure any changes to law are positive, you will appreciate the need to understand the current law, reasons why it is as it is, and effect of change (a variant of the Chestertons fence principle).Thread 1. #EqualityAct
I am a specialist equality law solicitor who has litigated about all the protected characteristics 2.
So here are my brief thoughts on sex/ gender, GRA, Equality Act and hate crime law; and the changes you announced this week to bring in self ID (whilst protecting single sex spaces) and criminalise “misgendering” 3.

“Political end by litigious means”

In the 49-page ruling, the three-person tribunal comprehensively considered the 10 points of the detailed complaint, brought on behalf of Fraser by high-profile pro-Israel lawyer Anthony Julius.

After dismissing each one of them in detail (“without substance … devoid of any merit … palpably groundless … untenable … obviously hopeless”), the document appears to foreclose the possibility of another such “lawfare” attack ever being brought to court again
“Lessons should be learned from this sorry saga.
We greatly regret that the case was ever brought.
At heart, it represents an impermissible attempt to achieve a political end by litigious means.
It would be very unfortunate if an exercise of this sort were ever repeated”

I did a tour of the small business units on my estate this pm, & held a TRA

10 of 27 are closing next month as their bills have all increased by 400% to 700%

50 jobs lost

11 have contracts to next April, & the other 6 for 18 months

corner shop cafe closing too, 11 staff going
#EnoughlsEnough #energy #EnergyCrisis

is anyone else in my circle able to check with mixed use housing estates in their area, on how their small business units are doing please?

I *honestly* do feel as though I'm the only account here highlighting these issues

Today, Americans commemorate a landmark victory for equal justice under the law. By unequivocally recognizing the Constitutional right to marriage equality, the Obergefell v. Hodges decision continues to bring joy, dignity and justice to families in every corner of the country.
Yet this fundamental right has come under grave threat as right-wing extremists seek to undermine legal precedent, unwind hard-fought progress and strip away basic freedoms.
In the wake of the Supreme Court’s outrageous and heart-wrenching decision overturning Roe v. Wade, radical Republicans have made clear that they are setting their sights on other rulings rooted in the Constitutional right to privacy — including Obergefell.

LIVE: I'm on the Senate floor to speak out against the recent wave of hateful attacks on transgender youth happening across the country.

We all have a responsibility to stand up and make clear that this isn’t right. twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1…
Republicans are targeting trans & gay students, & taking incredibly important & personal decisions away from parents & families.

Right now, it feels like far-right lawmakers are racing to pass the most extreme, most hateful bills they can think up at the expense of trans kids.
Trans kids deserve to just be kids. To play sports, to go to school, to see a doctor, to get health care.

They should be able to get the same opportunities as any other kids to learn, grow, play, and thrive—free from fear and discrimination.

hey, everyone. mom of a trans kid here in TX. thanks so much for reaching out, but i have a huge, important ask (thread coming):
PLEASE stop tweeting that families like mine need to flee the state. OPINIONS are not laws. @KenPaxtonTX can't invent new laws. legislatures do that, and #txlege failed in 2021 to make loving trans kids a punishable offense.
STOP PUTTING THIS IMPETUS ON PARENTS OF TRANS KIDS.

instead, tell voters to get their asses to the polls. it's primary season here in texas and this is nothing more than a political stunt by @KenPaxtonTX and @GregAbbott_TX to win votes. don't let them get away with it.

Today, the House took a bold step forward in protecting the fundamental rights of the global LGBTQ community. The bipartisan #GlobalRespectAct will ensure America offers no safe haven to those who violate the human rights of our LGBTQ family, friends & neighbors around the world.
Tragically, thousands of LGBTQ individuals are subjected to attack, harassment, arrest and murder every year, suffering under state-sanctioned discrimination and a surge of violence. Those responsible all too often act with impunity, never facing consequences for their crimes.
The #GlobalRespectAct will help counter that injustice, barring offenders from entering the United States, gathering new data on anti-LGBTQ human rights violations and holding perpetrators accountable, including through additional sanctions.

🧵#Thread: As an out gay person, I was really excited to announce my campaign for Congress during #pride and knew what I was getting into. Less than a week later, I got this anonymous voicemail full of hate and homophobia. [Trigger warning.] While I’m not surprised, it’s not ok.
I struggled over whether we should release the voicemail. I don't want to give literal voice to hate. But, after a lot of thought, my team and I decided to release it.⬇️
I am doing this so that people can learn about what queer people still face today and to expose our politics to ourselves. Listen to it. Hearing hate hits differently than reading it in a comment section.⬇️

Republicans cite “science” as why they oppose the #EqualityAct - a bill that would extend federal civil rights protections to all #LGBTQ Americans.

Rigorous research has shown that #trans antidiscrimination laws result in a decrease in suicidality. States that implemented these laws saw a 39% drop in suicidality among #trans people.

Adolescent suicidality dropped in states that passed marriage equality, likely due to broad societal impact that improved social climates and subsequently mental health

Today is a great & historic day for America. With the #EqualityAct passing in the House, we're closer to living up to our professed values as a nation.

Speaker Pelosi said it all here: "This is not about tolerance. This is about respect. This is about taking pride." #LGBTQ🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️
.@RepCicilline an author of the #EqualityAct, has been fighting for #EqualityForAll for decades in recognition of his rights and the rights of others in the #LGBTQ community.

He protected our Constitution as a House Manager; it must be made clear that it protects him as well.
In debates in the House before voting, Republicans appealed to ugly, hateful attacks on the #LGBTQ community — with particular venom reserved for transgender people.

@SenSchumer didn't mince his words in denouncing their hateful GOP agenda nor in describing his personal stake.

OK, so this gets me a little verklempt. Herewith a true story about two of the most special moments in the 116th Congress - the first Congress for me and my friend @SpanbergerVA07. Sharing because it's a nice story and we need more nice stories. Thread:
1/ So one of the weirder things about this job is that all votes "feel" the same. Lots of debate, drama, press before & after (some) votes, but the process of pressing yay or nay is the same on a post office renaming as it is on a $5T appropriation.
2/ Intuitively, of course we know some are more meaningful. But the feedback is usually delayed. My first experience of anything different was the vote on the #EqualityAct in the 116th.

When will media outlets like @NPR stop being lazy & start doing their job?!

The #EqualityAct is a HUGE departure from the gains achieved in the SCOTUS Bostock ruling & there are meaningful objections to the Act that aren't religious!

#AmendTheEqualityAct
npr.org/2021/02/24/969…
.@NPR's #EqualityAct reporting today was a failure:

"This act would explicitly enshrine those nondiscrimination protections into law for sexual orientation and gender identity, rather [...] 'sex.' However, the Equality Act would also substantially expand those protections." /2
This glosses over an important point:

The #EqualityAct does NOT follow the Bostock ruling which enshrined protections on the basis of sex. Instead of sex, the Act is based on gender identity.

This causes a cascade of damages that affect LGB people as well as women and girls /3

New poll results reveal overwhelming bipartisan rejection of "gender identity" policies in West Virginia, such as those that would go into effect with the passage of the #EqualityAct. @Sen_JoeManchin @SenCapito

The results found wide, cross-partisan, agreement that men should not be allowed in women’s intimate spaces such as changing rooms or homeless shelters, even if they identify as women.
86 percent of WV voters agreed that male domestic abusers and sex offenders should not be allowed to serve their sentence in a women’s prison regardless of their claimed “gender identity,” including 78 percent of registered democrats.
