If corporations really succeeded or failed in a fair marketplace, they wouldn't need to hire lobbyists or get subsidies or tax breaks.
Some like to say that laborers fall into poverty because of laziness and don't deserve a safety net. But if the big corporations were people, they would be the biggest moochers of all time.
The more research I do into Reconstruction, the more I realize that a big motivator behind the Civil War was the demand that wealthy people have the legal right to completely control their workers.

“We shouldn’t have to struggle. We shouldn’t have to work 60 hours a week just to pay our bills.

“We just want to be able to live and to provide for our families.”

Coventry workers are today halfway through their weeklong #AmazonStrike as they #Fightfor15.

After the first-ever UK Amazon strike in January, this weeklong action is an amazing step up. Hats off to all workers on the picket line and @GMBMidlands! ✊

Spent part of this week talking to undocumented women about how they're getting stiffed on wages and thinking about how much of my early working life was spent fighting men taking advantage of me because I was young and pretty and desperate and people thought I was stupid.
🧵/1
There is so much abuse in the work force and employers in sweat shops and produce places and restaurants all know how to scam workers who have no recourse. It's so awful, but the GOP thinks "socialism" is the problem, not corporatism. Employees have so little recourse.

So many movements were supposed to help us. What happened to #TimesUp? What happened to the #FightFor15? What happened to Biden saying 2yrs ago he would raise the minimum wage? It's still at $7.25 where it's been since 2009 when Pelosi raised it. What happened to Bernie?

BREAKING: After workers organize strikes at over 350 restaurants across the state, California’s State Senate has passed #AB257

Today is a watershed moment in the history of the labor movement; 550,000 fast food workers in CA will soon have a seat at the table with our employers
After a concurrence vote in the Assembly, AB 257 heads to @CAGovernor’s desk for signature.

@CAgovernor AB 257 will create a 10 member council with two worker representatives, two worker advocates, one member from @CA_DIR, one from @CAgovernor's Office of Business and Economic Development, two representatives of franchisors, and two representatives of franchisees.

BREAKING 🚨🚨 | We've just launched our campaign for a £15 minimum wage.
Millions of low-paid workers are being pushed to the brink by eye-watering bills and soaring prices.

Yet companies are making record profits and handing massive pay rises to those at the very top.
Higher wages are good for the economy.

More money for working people means more money spent in our high streets.

I was talking about my film yesterday and someone asked me why I care about sex workers so much. I thought I’d take the time to explain why I care about sex workers and you should, too. #SexWorkIsRealWork 1/
Full disclosure, I was a survival sex worker while I was #homeless. I used to carry a lot of shame over it, but I’ve made my peace with the experience. My experience is not universal. 2/
For starters, you should care about sex workers because we’re people, and there is a basic level of empathy that any decent person should maintain for others. I could end right here. 3/

Gotta love that Biden was using Ukraine as a money laundering operation and leads this speech with it.

When Democrats control the House and Senate, they allow their leadership and right-wing to savage and throttle and destroy any and all "progressive" legislation, while using the GOQP as a crutch and gaslighting the Left for "excessive expectations" and "purity".
Then, when the backlash results in the GOQP taking power and reinforcing the policies ConservaDems wanted anyway, Democrats scapegoat the Left for the former's losses to justify lurching further Right, all the while moaning about the Left's lack of loyalty and support.
And then, come the next election cycle, Democrats are all over the Left's spaces and social media streams, wailing at us that we MUST back "more and better Democrats" in order to defeat the TRUMPFASCISTS...all so that Democrats can continue the endless loop of screwing the Left.

🧵The other day @pressprogress published an article (pressprogress.ca/ontario-educat… ) exposing @Sflecce’s private audience with right wing religious lobbying organization & “think tank”, #Cardus. #OntEd #FireLecce #cdnpoli
#Cardus, a registered “charity”, wants taxpayers to fund private for-profit religious schools & a voucher system that has gutted public education in 🇺🇸.

This model would siphon needed funds from public schools & funnel them instead to schools with RW religious ideology #ONpoli
#Cardus revenues = nearly $5M/yr.
Cardus’ donations from other charities increased 17.4 X from 2008-2020. A nearly 2,000% increase in just over a decade. Yet they pay zero in taxes, because “charity”…like lobbying to gut public education in favour of for-profit religious schools

Climate or a nine member court.

Time to pick.
As a reminder, the only reason @rhodium_group concluded that

the US could still meet its climate goals...

even if Build Back Better lacked a clean electricity standard...

Was an assumption of lots of EPA action under existing statutes.

WATCH: Moral Monday Press Conference | Which Side Are You On Senator Manchin? #PoorPeoplesCampaign twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1…

The filibuster has been used in bad ways, and for Sen. Manchin to continue to use it is wrong.

Nothing was wrong with the For The People Act, which the late Rep. John Lewis actually wrote. We don’t need Manchin’s “Freedom to Vote Act.” Voting is a right, not a freedom.

The most important public religion story in the US right now may be the realignment of white Christians around values of justice, love of neighbor & the common good. A short thread on the #RevolutionOfValues that often doesn’t make headlines…
Folks who’ve been driven to extremism by the propaganda of the religious right get a lot of attention. Patriot churches. Capitol rioters w/ Jesus flags. White #ChristianNationalism is dangerous & deserves attention, but its extremism is the desperation of a shrinking minority.
As @robertpjones has noted, @PRRIpoll’s latest data shows that white evangelicals as a percentage of US population have shrunk from roughly a quarter of Americans to less than a 7th. Why?

Calls to establish a regionally adjusted federal minimum wage are dangerously misguided. There is not a county in the U.S. where an individual working full time could achieve a secure standard of living earning less than $15 per hour. epi.org/blog/calls-to-…
Raising the minimum wage to its historical peak in 1968 had no adverse effects on employment, according to new evidence. Establishing a strong national floor is easier now than in 1968 because wage differences across states have declined substantially. academic.oup.com/qje/article-ab…
A regional minimum wage would serve to normalize or tolerate existing low-wage conditions in particular regions, industries, or occupations that are largely the result of historical racism and sexism.

The #FightFor15 is back on the table, thanks to some canny procedural wrangling by @SenSchumer (it remains to be see whether ghouls like @JoeManchinWV and @kyrstensinema will sabotage it again).

theintercept.com/2021/03/29/min…

1/
The Fight for $15 started in 2012. The $15 figure represented the fair, inflation-adjusted minimum wage that Americans should have if minimum wage tracked the cost of living. By 2021, the inflation-adjusted minimum wage should have been $24/hour.

theintercept.com/2021/03/05/min…

2/
That means that even if we get around Manchin and Sinema to deliver a fair share to the country's worst-paid workers, we'll STILL be lagging a true, inflation-adjusted minimum wage.

The American Rescue Plan that President Biden will sign tomorrow could increase income for some of America’s poor & low-income families by 20% this year. This is part of the bold action Biden promised the #PoorPeoplesCampaign last September.
While we have more work to do to make these changes permanent & address longterm inequality, President Biden & Vice President Harris have already helped shift the conversation about what is possible.
Not a single Republican was willing to join Democrats to pass this legislation, but what VP Harris said to our PPC Assembly 2 years ago is still true: ending poverty is a moral issue that can unite Americans & lift us all.

When the min wage "comes back up" again there will be even less incentive to pass it.

The fact that the COVID bill AND the #FightFor15 are popular is why both should be pushed now.

The pressure should be on those *against* a $15 min wage to justify tanking COVID relief over it
Instead, corporate Democrats are *thrilled* that, by decoupling the $15 min wage from the COVID bill, the parliamentarian has provided cover for their lack of commitment to a living wage. Now they have cover to avoid campaigning Manchin/Sinema and upsetting the donor base.
No one is "moving goal posts." People with experience on the hill understand that the conditions during the next reconciliation process will make a $15 min wage *less* likely to pass, not more. And some of us are unwilling to negotiate with -- say it with me -- A LIVING WAGE.
