Women's rights.

Today we dive into one example of how a #poster can talk about social issues.

A thread: Image
In 1995, the Fourth World Conference on Women was held in Beijing. It was a historic event that brought together thousands of delegates from around the world to discuss gender equality and women’s rights. #Beijing95
The conference resulted in the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a visionary agenda for the empowerment of women. It set out measures for national and international action in 12 critical areas of concern. #BeijingPlatformforAction

1. Why did Gulf kingdoms embrace Iran? When the #GulfArab states saw what happened in Iran over one #Kurdish woman who stood up to became the #Mideast version of Rosa Parks, they all panicked. Remember, the US lists as terrorists a group whose ideology seeks #genderequality.
2. That continued listing over an ideology we support is something @POTUS @VP and @SecBlinken need to explain. But in the interim, we are seeing the #Arab word suddenly embracing #Assad, a blood soaked chemical weapon-using, sociopathic dictator. Why?
3. Because he's the one they have tapped to eliminate the #Syrian #Kurds. And all the #misogynists cheer him as their standard bearer. And once the #SDF is gone and the #women once again relegated to second-class rights, they can get back to business

On #StPatricksDay2023 I want to shout out to my compatriots from #Ireland producing some of the most incisive, compelling, and agenda-setting scholarship in global constitutional law today. Read them, follow them, connect with them.

A loooong (but very incomplete) thread 🧵
A few quick starting notes for a global audience.
I often think constitutional law research by Irish scholars is so rich because of our unique context, in a constitutional system that has one foot in colonialism and conflict, and one (today) in the rich Global North.
#Ireland's war of independence, civil war, 1922 Constitution, partition, and 1937 Constitution (still in force) sets our experience apart from the gradualist constitutional development of e.g. #Canada, #Australia, #NewZealand, but has commonalities with other states (e.g. India).

Here is our Twitter #thread on why supporting campaigns of women running for office is crucial for achieving gender equality and social justice:
In a world where women make up half the population, their voices and perspectives need to be represented in government and multilateral organizations. By supporting women running for office, we can ensure that our leadership is more diverse, representative, and effective.
Women in leadership positions have been shown to prioritize issues like healthcare, education, and social welfare that benefit families and communities. By voting for more women to office, we can make progress on these important issues

💥1/9: UK housing affordability since the year 1876 (UPDATED to 2022)

Average house~9x average earnings

Here’s a chart-thread of my research, as covered by:

@Bloomberg @Telegraph, @thisismoney, @TheSun, @guardian

Full article: schroders.com/en/insights/ec…

#houseprices #property
2/9 Last time UK houses were so expensive vs earnings was the year 1876

They were even more expensive previously…

What happened to change things? More houses, smaller houses, higher incomes.
3/9 Most people didn’t really benefit though, as over 75% rented at that time. Home ownership didn’t take off until 2nd half of 20th century.

Note the reversal post-2001. Home ownership becoming less attainable

The 11 men who were serving life in prison for gang rape and murders during the 2002 Gujarat riots, are now free, Indian media reports. The men were freed on Monday after the state government approved their application for remission of sentence. Image
The state says their application was considered because of the “completion of 14 years” in jail. Life sentences in India typically carry a 14 year jail term.
During a wave of anti-Muslim violence, after local Muslims were blamed for a train carrying Hindu pilgrims catching fire,
Bilkis Bano was gang raped and her three-year-old daughter killed. Thirteen others were also killed during the March 2002 riots, Al Jazeera reports. Bano survived by pretending to be dead.

Additional course correction for #SDG5 is needed.
Our #SDG5plus (SDG5+) approach takes into consideration #intersectionality and gender aspects beyond #women alone, & can help #adaptation actions move towards meeting #genderequality and other #climatejustice goals.

The rise of the teal female independents in #AusVotes2022 provides a striking case study into the power of "disruptive innovation"
(a concept defined by the esteemed Harvard Professor Clayton Christensen)
2/
Disruptive innovation is sparked when a small but growing segment of the market is ignored and neglected by existing businesses, deemed “not important" or "not lucrative" enough to bother catering to or investing in.
3/
In response to this void in the market, a new business can enter the market focused on addressing the needs, values and concerns of this "overlooked" segment.

They bring new ways of doing things and fresh approaches that resonate with those who feel unheard.

What do economists want to see in #Budget2022?

We need investment in the economy's "real" productive capacity.

That means R&D, investment in the health & care workforce, housing, digital connectivity, dismantling barriers to women's economic inclusion

#ausecon #auspol
… This requires a #Budget2022 with long-term vision and policy innovation, not just short-term cost relief.

Current inflationary pressures mean that splashing cash could actually make things worse, unless we also focus on the "supply side" of the economy.
The Budget is also a statement of a country's values and priorities

Expect a sizeable increase in defence spending to "keep Australians safe"

Meanwhile Australian women continue to be murdered by a current or former partner at a rate of one woman per week (Source: @OurWatchAus)

International Women’s Day #IWD is to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, & political achievements of women around the world.
But today, my heart aches for the women of my homeland who've had their achievements of the last two decades taken away from them overnight.

20 years ago, one of the reasons the US invaded Afghanistan was to ‘liberate’ its women from the oppression & tyranny of the Taliban.

They were sold a dream of freedom & liberty to choose their own destiny & they worked excruciatingly hard to make that dream a reality. 2/7
From politics to sports, technology, arts, business, education, community, the progress of the women of Afghanistan has been nothing short of phenomenal.
But they were betrayed.
20 years later, they were sold back to their oppressors & left utterly alone with a broken dream. 3/7
