There is an attrition of women that increases across the stages in academia and in medicine. This is true across all countries and in all (many!?) disciplines. We need to change this. Is it a leaky pipeline or broken glass tunnel? Image
What about in 🇨🇦? Our numbers are very similar in Canada and within hospitals across Ontario. When we lose the diversity we lose a lot. How can we have equitable engagement in undergraduate schools but attrition ramps up with each stage. For POC it is much worse. ImageImageImage

1/n A🧵. I finally paid off my medical school loans this week. I made payments simultaneously with the LRP. Here is why the @NIH_LRP is a great career move for PhD scientists and especially for physicians who generally have crushing loans... #loans #MedEd
2/n *Let yourself be #mentored* When I was finishing cardiology fellowship training, I swore I was NEVER going back to research! My Chair convinced me (“…just one last ride, Scott....you can do it”). Listen to those who know you and see something. @Keith_R_M @JustinLathia
3/n *Accept roadblocks*. I was offered an amazing job in private practice paying 7x my salary. No shame in that. I applied for 12 grants and 1 was awarded. My 1st K08 was rejected. In my darkest hour at 12:31 hrs on a Saturday AM @NIH_LRP emailed. Someone believed in my work

Learned so much in this evening's @AACI_Cancer@ webinar on physician use of social media! Dr. @fumikochino highlighted sev successful research collaborations that began via #SoMe & said that Twitter has helped a lot with the "hustle" all #MedTwitter junior faculty face.
Dr. @SyedAAhmad5, who began tweeting during the #pandemic, highlighted opportunities to expand reach of #MedEd via #SoMe. For example, he taught this to #MedStudentTwitter, then realized there was no reason the learning needed to be confined to his operating room. cc @AACI_Cancer
Drs. @Jasosamd, @fumikochino, & @SyedAAhmad5 provided examples of using #SoMe to inform #MedTwitter, #SurgTwitter, & the pt #advocacy community about one's own research, as well as to promote the work of colleagues, esp mentees.

How womens restrooms can be made more inclusive: a thread 🧵
1. Remove bathroom locks - locks in bathrooms create a sense of hostility and may make many folk feel unwelcome. This is particularly important for people who want access to join someone else in their cubicle. (cont..)
The removal of locks would transfer bathrooms from isolationist spaces (with notions of neoliberal individualism) into collective, social spaces, creating a better sense of community and solidarity amongst women, & facilitating more effective organization for womens liberation.

I presented at @AdvocateKids @advocatehealth #WIMmonth event this past weekend on Inclusive Leadership: Leave no (wo)man behind.

🔑Some about me & my key points to support #WomenInMedicine as a leader: 🧵1/
2/ I am first gen #LatinasInMedicine from a humble background on the Texas-Mexico border. I was a great student growing up. I pleased my family. As a resident, I made more money than my family. I had no idea I was underpaid as a junior attending. I pleased my chair as RVU queen.
3/ I missed the memo on how to be promoted (as happens to BIPOC women). Delayed the process because no guidance.
When I finally took the risk (late), I became the 8th Latina associate professor of PM&R in the country.

✍🏻Teach #WomenInMedicine what it takes for promotion.

2/ I was raised Catholic and believe in this (ctto via reddit)

Love thy neighbor.
All neighbors. No exceptions.

If I really hated them then I just did not hang out w them 🤷🏻‍♀️. No hateful speech or hateful laws.
3/ Most of my family in Texas is religious, republican, & single issue voters. Anti abortion, no matter what. Even if M@ga Trumpism breaks all the other 9 commandments.

I hate that I now have to discuss forced-birth issues w beloveds.

Let’s talk #GenderEquity to start. We all know #WomenInMedicine are getting burned out and leaving the workforce. And it’s not because they aren’t “resilient” or “ambitious” but bc there are barriers in place that result in women working twice as hard and not getting recognition
That happens across the board but we see it in #WomenInOncology as well. A pub just out in @ASCOPost w @DrSGraff @NarjustDumaMD @drdonsdizon and colleagues describes some of the challenges and solutions

dailynews.ascopubs.org/do/10.1200/ADN…
The onus of addressing these inequities should not fall on the shoulders of those who are most impacted by these inequities. Unfortunately as @bridgetMDPhD @LekshmiMD and I described in our paper on the #ThirdShift that is exactly what happens.

Sharing a thread 🧵 of some amazing #WomenInMedicine who are making a difference and using their voices to change the narrative. Sharing a few pieces here that came out today with different reflections on this years #WIMSummit @doximity
First up @RakheeBhayaniMD kicks off her powerful piece (her first OpEd!) “Empower. Educate. Elevate. Those are the words that come to mind as I reflect on my experience at the recent virtual #WIMSummit.”

Next @CShoush shares how this years #WIMSummit helped her find her voice. “ I now counteract “What makes you special-why you?” With a newly energized, inspired and courageous rebuttal. Now I respond with “Why not me?” And then I take the step forward into the unknown.”

I wrote this article for my own catharsis. I never expected it to be peer reviewed. When @NEJM accepted it, I experienced my first panic attack. 1/
@WomenInMedicine @WomeninOnc @AMWADoctors @womeninmedchat @WomeninAcademi1
My sudden physiologic reaction took me by surprise and was really embarrassing – I was super tachycardic, diaphoretic, and vasovagal. Then had an intense parasympathetic reaction with acute-onset diarrhea. TMI, sorry. 2/
When I managed to recoup, I realized - how dare this system, this culture, make me feel so panicked about being vulnerable, truthful, and righteously angry? 3/

“[...] the more I have spoken about feminism the more I have realized that fighting for women’s rights has too often become synonymous with man-hating. If there is one thing I know for certain, it is that this has to stop.”

#HeForShe
“For the record, feminism by definition is: “The belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. It is the theory of the political, economic and social equality of the sexes.”

#HeForShe
“My recent research has shown me that feminism has become an unpopular word.
Apparently I am among the ranks of women whose expressions are seen as too strong, too aggressive, isolating, anti-men and, unattractive. Why is the word such an uncomfortable one?”

This does not surprise BIPOC. We live it daily. The rest of you often deny our lived reality or assume it is exaggerated. Then you are shocked and ask “what happened to my country”

what happened: is you insisting on keeping your head in the sand & shutting down truth tellers
Most liberal/progressive types who get super excited by data... data that are incomplete, flawed, or based on people lying in polls due to social acceptability bias. But many liberal intellectuals are
Very little has changed since this was written by MLK. Very little has changed since my grandfather was training in England in Colonial times (there he was considered “black” and black/brown more similar as BAME) as a highly skilled surgeon (ophthalmologist) but sub-human.

Burnout score, professional fulfillment score, self valuation score among leaders, and their wellness scores.

Role model effect. No associations between leaders' scores of burnout, professional fulfillment and self-valuation with the same outcomes for those who they supervised.

Sleep impairment, however, shows an association.
