I grew up in South London in the Thatcher years. There was a lot of hostility towards the police. When I moved to #HongKong in the early 90s, I was struck by the genial relations between people and the police. They were generally liked and respected 1/
#HongKong people were proud that their police force was not like the Public Security Bureau of China. There were always bad eggs but generally, the force was considered clean and professional. People trusted them 2/
I covered and attended many protests over the years. In the past they were almost always peaceful and there was little aggro from the police. This began to change in the CYLeung years as Beijing tightened the screws and society became more polarised 3/

2/ The Hong Kong government, headed by a quasi-elected, Beijing-approved Chief Executive Carrie Lam, is attempting to pass an "extradition bill" that gives the PRC power to extradite criminals from HK to PRC.
3/ However, with the passage of the bill, it will ALSO give greater power to PRC to extradite people from HK on arbitrary reasons - namely, political opposition. Instead of using "enforced disappearances" to make certain individuals suddenly resurface...

Calls for strikes & protests for June 12th in #HongKong. That's when the extradition bill is scheduled for a second reading. Carrie Lam, the HK head of government is under pressure to resign. She is doing the bidding of #China's #CCP government.
HK leader Carrie Lam says the extradition bill was not proposed by Beijing. "We are doing it," she says. Not true. She is China's stooge in H.K. Why HK people elected these leaders? It's because China has veto power over the candidates. Only pro #China candidates can run.

Good morning 🌞(ironic v/c it is pretty cloudy/rainy in #HongKong 🇭🇰. Overnight, we got:
a) Markets jolted by high JOLTS 🧀, I know I know...
b) Mexico 🇲🇽 patrolling the southern borders & considering “third safe” country if won’t work
c) Trump said more tariffs on China ready...
The Mexico tariff was likely used for 2020 & targeted to define Trump vs Democrats in the border issue, as in he cares about the borders. Re China & last tranche of tariffs, don’t think Trump’ll raise in 2019 b/c mostly consumer goods vs the existing ones (mostly intermediates).
Again, method of Mexico tariff was abrupt & Mexico believed it as he actually slapped tariffs on China & Mexico realised that some law & order needed on its side as well, esp w/ opps of investment re US China tariff arbitrage. Mexico took the rational choice. What about China?

HK will likely ignite again on June 12 when the extradition bill is scheduled for second reading. Calls for actions have are now circulating in Telegram groups. Not heeding the popular will is going to have dire long term consequences for the HK government.
More calls for protest on June 12
Intersting poster, @jwassers. Goes to what you said the other week about protest as a form of learning and not an attempt to escape education.

Good morning 🌞 - #Hongkong is front page news 🇭🇰 & we got:

a) US Mexico tariff off
b) G20 signals more tariffs for tech
c) ECB & Japan find themselves the same future - ageing👵🏻👵, stagnation & sadly NIRP & QE no antidote & maybe quickening the 📉 reut.rs/2K5U0VW
Eyes are on May China trade (May reserves up to USD3.1trn from 3.09) & expectations in USD are:

-3.9% YoY for May (don't forget that state manu PMI declined & Korea exports 📉📉);
Imports expectations -3.5%

We also have Indonesia CPI but won't stop BI from tempting a cut in H2
China exports rose +1.1% YoY in May from -2.7% & imports contracted -8.5% in May in USD terms. Chart 👇🏻 trade in China (imports falling sharply). As data is volatile, I smoothed it out using 3m moving average 👇🏻Notice import contraction deepening (orange) & imports lead exports😬

#HongKong: Pressure on the #USD - #HKD peg is mounting. The rising #US interest rates have put enormous pressure on the HKD peg. This has depleted Hong Kong's excess FX reserves.
#HongKong has FX Reserves of $438bn (March 2019) plus another $6.9bn from the HKMA Exchange Fund which is there to stabilize the #HKD peg. Looking at the HKMA Exchange fund it is clear that money has been leaving HK. Since 2016 the fund has gone from $55bn to $7bn.
#HongKong M2 is currently 1,8 trillion USD. However, the total FX Reserves / M2 are only at 24%.

Why‘s @KimDotcom so pro-#China? Why‘s @Snowden not critical of #Beijing? There seems to be a red thread tying both to #HongKong. Of that clique, only @WikiLeaks#Assange has been vocally anti-#CCP. Now, after #INAPapers show @Lenin was bribed by China’s #Sinohidro, he’s gagged.
… another oddity at the nexus of the #Ecuador/#UK/#Assange standoff: #Manafort was lobbying on behalf of #China’s efforts to “invest” in Ecuador’s grid & “trade” Assange. Now we find out from #INAPapers that Presidenté #Moreno was bribed by #Sinohydro. 🤔
… is it possible that #China’s man, #Manafort, was working a multipartite deal — b/t #China/#Ecuador/#UK/#USA — to trade #WikiLeaks#Assange, possibly working bilaterally so as to keep each of the counterparties in the dark about the “full deal?”

“Win-win-win-win” cooperation?

A little thread, which I may come back to, for all those #technophobes who blame rise in #suicide on #socialmedia.

First: legit, what rise?
Second: The actual experts do not agree with you, and your fear-mongering is likely causing more harm than good.
cf. Thomas, K, and Gunnell, D. (2010). Suicide in England and Wales 1861–2007: a time-trends analysis. International Journal of Epidemiology, Volume 39, Issue 6, December 2010, Pages 1464–1475.
So, first the data, from #UK (above) and elsewhere (below).

Clearly if this epidemic was *caused* by a *single* factor it would permeate all societies with social media.

Exclusive report.

Nirav Modi was setup by London based auction houses of Christie & Sotheby involved in auction of our ancient idols & manuscripts stolen by East India Company spies & hoarded in warehouses of British Empire's officers.

gginews.in/nirav-modi-smu…
Nirav Modi’s meteoric rise begins with world famous auction houses of #Christie’s & #Sotheby’s who sold his #Golconda diamonds to unknown buyers. This trick was punctured by cases of inflated invoices, diamond smuggling, market manipulations, money laundering by Indian agencies.
What most people fail to grasp is that this is not just one fraud, its a web of multiple scams – it’s a way of life. To better illustrate this point we mention below briefly about one of their adventures in Zimbabwe in 2012 & encourage our readers to checkout the rest.
