🚨 In the last hours at #COP27 Parties proposed a new agreement on #CarbonMarkets that does not include any meaningful references to #HumanRights & Indigenous Peoples rights & could undermine ambition & effective #ClimateAction.

🗣️ This text MUST BE REJECTED.

🟢The good: The recommendations on #Article6o4 (carbon markets) will be sent back to the #SupervisoryBody with a request for more stakeholder engagement BUT this will be the same body tasked with the same mandate that came up with a very bad decision at the beginning of #COP27.

The bad:
🔴 No operative reference to #HumanRights, #IndigenousPeoples rights & labour rights
🔴 No reference to the work needed to be grounded in intl law & science
🔴 Reference to environmental & social impacts opens the door for the weakening of language & sets precedents.

It’s #SolutionsDay at #COP27. Key solutions to the #ClimateCrisis:
‼️ Phase out all #FossilFuels, NOW not tomorrow
‼️ Halt #Deforestation

Forests play a vital role in:
🧯 Mitigating #ClimateChange,
🐿️ Protecting biodiversity, and
🫒 Supporting the lives and livelihoods of #IndigenousPeoples and forest-dependent communities.

The ability of forest ecosystems to fulfill these critical functions is increasingly threatened by deforestation and forest degradation.
Curbing illegal logging and #TimberTrade is a critical but neglected component in addressing global deforestation.

#COP27: In the wee hours of this morning, @COP27P released a new, lengthy, draft decision text.
The cover decision is the COP's political signal to the world in response to the #ClimateCrisis.

A draft dropped around 06:30 local time and it has ballooned from 2 pages to 20, an unusual choice (and it is a choice) by the @COP27p with 36 hours left, making it FAR harder for civil society to have a voice in influencing the final decision.

Ironically (not really 😱)the text includes the 1.5C target & references to science but then doesn't follow what experts & academics have been saying for years:

On my way to #COP27 & during my stopover in London tuning in to follow the ongoing discussions of the #Article6.4 Mechanism Supervisory Body (read #CarbonMarket), where members are discussing methodologies for the mechanism & some of its activities: unfccc-events.azureedge.net/Article64third…. A 🧵

#NoOffsets: For the #Article6.4 mechanism to have any positive contributions to enhancing #ClimateAmbition, it must be clear that "credits" generated cannot be used for offsets. You cannot offset your way to 1.5C. #NoOffsets

Critically, members are discussing the potential for "removal" activities, but removals are not reductions and come with considerable risks for #HumanRights, reversals (i.e. when wildfires subsequently destroy a forest), etc.

Countries' #Climate pledges to get to #NetZero GHG rely partly on removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, using methods such as planting trees & restoring degraded ecosystems.

New #LandGapReport revealed that these are schemes unrealistic.

National climate pledges would collectively require 1.2 billion hectares of land.

More than half of this land is already currently used for something else. This demand for land will put pressure on ecosystems, Indigenous lands, small farmers and food security.

In being #GoodRelatives, we must respect all people when they tell us how they identify & not use outdated, inaccurate, or derogatory terminology. The Indigenous peoples of the Arctic have been clear about rejecting this term.

The word “Esk*mo” is an offensive term that has been used historically to describe Inuit peoples throughout their homelands, Inuit Nunangat, in the arctic regions of Alaska, Greenland, and Canada, as well as the Yupik of Alaska and northeastern Russia, and the Inupiat of Alaska.

The use of “Esk*mo”, an exonym (a name given to a group of people by another group), and perpetuates harmful stereotypes of the Inuit as remote and politically insignificant, while also romanticizing the Arctic.

Today I tabled legislation to prohibit the use of prolonged solitary confinement BC's correctional facilities for both adults and youth.

Solitary confinement is a dehumanizing and insidious form of psychological harm. 1/ #bcpoli #BanSolitaryConfinement bcgreencaucus.ca/post/b-c-green…

Solitary confinement of more than 15 days is considered torture by the UN Nelson Mandela Rules.

Despite this, on any given day in BC's correctional facilities 33 people are held in violation of these human rights principles. 2/ #bcpoli

We know that solitary confinement does not help rehabilitate the adults and youth in the corrections system, and in fact harms them. Solitary confinement has disproportionate effects on Indigenous people. 3/ #bcpoli #IndigenousPeoples
