Jim Crow laws created ‘slavery by another name’
After the Civil War, the U.S. passed laws to protect the rights of formerly enslaved people. Jim Crow was designed to flout them.

Hey @kelly_cadigan, the internet doesn’t think you’re racist, we now KNOW you are. But I’m grateful for this video because it also perfectly illuminates what I’ve been saying about how detrimental the myth of white supremacy is.

1/
Because you have been ingrained from BIRTH to believe that you are inherently superior, you had NO problem waxing poetically about something you admittedly knew NOTHING about & couldn’t be bothered to research before giving your “expert” opinion with your WHOLE chest. 🥴

2/
And this wasn’t a conversation about pumpkin spice lattes or the best lip plumper.

You were FLIPPANTLY and DEFIANTLY loud and wrong about SLAVERY.

You made a mockery of GENERATIONAL suffering whose remnants linger to this day!

I just…

Whew.

“Were these monuments built for Germans to collectively remember what had been done, or a performance of contrition for the rest of the world?”

Fascinating @TheAtlantic essay by @ClintSmithIII on 🇩🇪 remembrance and lessons for the 🇺🇸 #slavery #Reparations
theatlantic.com/magazine/archi…
I grew up around many of these monuments in Berlin and followed the debates since I was a child. And I believe that #Stolpersteine are among the most effective ways to remember, because they are immediate, personal, and created and maintained by civic action.
“Dear father! I am saying goodbye to you before I die. We would so love to live, but they won’t let us and we will die. I am so scared of this death, because the small children are thrown alive into the pit. Goodbye forever. I kiss you tenderly.”

"Sectional feeling no longer holds back the love we feel for each other. The old flag again waves over us in peace with new glories.” Those words were spoken by #President #McKinley during a speech in #Atlanta #OTD in 1898 only four days after the end of the Spanish American War.
By 1898, the #LostCause narrative of the #CivilWar had made much headway in the minds of white Americans, North and South. The #JimCrow South was emerging by the late 19th century and was accompanied by a tidal wave of white supremacist terrorism.
McKinley's message of reunion was only meant for white Americans. Only a month earlier white terrorists violently overthrew #Wilmington, #NorthCarolina's biracial government, killing hundreds of Black Wilmingtonians in the process.

Democrats passed the laws (the #JimCrow #laws) that bullied private providers of goods and services into maintaining America's #apartheid, the #DemocraticParty's #policy of #separateandunequal.
1. #Trump's aggressive response when attacked;

2. #Biden's and #Hillary's unprovoked attacks on American citizens for holding different views on the uses of politics and power.
The Democrat Dimwits think that declaring half the nation deplorable and dangerous and seeking to put the Nation, like Bull Connor's dogs, onto the noxious #MAGA #Constitutionalists is their best path to dominance in electoral politics.

The Story of Race is a Story of Labor. In fact, most Europeans colonized North America for land and economic opportunities, not for religious freedom. There was no concept of race at that time. People identified by country of origin not by skin color. #WhiteSavior doc thread 🧵:
In 1676, enslaved Africans joined with European indentured servants in a large rebellion against the colonial government in Virginia. #WhiteSavior
Alarmed by the natural alliance between the indentured and enslaved, the ruling class passed a series of laws that segregated and permanently enslaved those of African descent, while also giving their European counterparts new rights and status. #WhiteSavior

FYI, this is basically the same argument made by segregationists in opposition to the integration of public schools post Brown v. Board. The GOP knows its bigoted base has a muscle memory for despising the mitigating hand of the federal government & public school system. #JimCrow
Also it’s no coincidence that they’re stirring up a shit storm about CRT, LGBTQ, BLM and abortion simultaneously. They wage a culture war on every front possible b/c hatred and oppression of marginalized groups is what unifies Republican voters to GOTV. #SouthernStrategy101👺🤡👹
Evangelicals “seized on abortion not for moral reasons, but as a rallying-cry to deny President Jimmy Carter a second term. Why? Because the anti-abortion crusade was more palatable than the religious right’s real motive: protecting segregated schools.” politico.com/magazine/story…

Our action partner, @BlackVotersMtr, has boycotted Biden’s speech in #Georgia on the #VotingRights bills, refusing to act as a photo op prop. Understand the frustration: we’ve been screaming about Georgia as #JimCrow central for 8 years...
Laws alone won’t help: we need the Justice Department to stomp on the new "voter fraud vigilante" challenge system we uncovered. We need enforcement of the laws we have, Joe. gregpalast.com/georgias-origi…
And CNN and MSNBC should stop referring to #Georgia Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger as a "hero" just because he wouldn’t go to jail for Trump.

Despite a problematic op-ed recently published in the NYT, election subversion and #JimCrow era voter suppression wielded today are inextricably and problematically linked. We need the #FreedomToVoteAct and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to mitigate this harm. 🧵
Election subversion and voter suppression were used together during the #JimCrow era of the 1870s-1950s to prevent Black voters from utilizing their full electoral power in the South: (2/9)
Georgia: 33 Black lawmakers who helped write a new state constitution guaranteeing voting rights for formerly enslaved Georgians were expelled from the state legislature after white legislators argued they had no right to hold office. (3/9)

Can we all have a serious bipartisan conversation around the history of immigration in America and it’s impact on #ADOS? The Immigration Act of 1864 was one of Lincoln’s most signature pieces of legislation prior to the #EmacipationProclomation of 1865.

friendsofthelincolncollection.org/lincoln-lore/l…
“This law legalized and bureaucratized labor recruitment practices similar to indentured servitude to encourage immigration to the United States and economic development.”
“Although many poor Europeans had arrived as indentured servants during the colonial period, the practice had ended in the 1820s.”Congress repealed this law in 1868 after protests by labor organizations.

If we want corporations to step up, every civil rights organization that has received donations from corporations must now ask the same corporations, "Are you supporting the U.S. Senators who have blocked restoration of the Voting Rights Act for over 7 years and 9 months?
Have you given to ALEC, the group that is promoting voter suppression bills in state houses across the U.S.?”

breachrepairers.org/blogs/if-we-ar…
If corporations speak out against voting laws and give social contributions to civil rights organizations but still invest in the Senators who are blocking the restoration of federal voting rights protections, then their public statements are just image management.

@CoachFelecia From time-to-time, ethnic personalities similar to that of #AndyNgo have appeared in right-wing movements ..

You just have to look for them.

These "ethnic" individuals aren't there to discover the truth!
@CoachFelecia They are their to provide a service. That is their value.

What is the service? They are weaponized to confuse the public while empowering "lily-white" delusions about black people.

*2022* canvassing tools for Georgia elections:

- Wireless printer ✔️
- Wagon wheel ✔️
- Water ✔️
I spent a month in rural GA, covering six counties with zero to no democratic infrastructure. The need for *connectivity* is even more valuable as many lower-income and rural-area families often struggle to either pay for and/or have access to it.
The local fast food parking lot was the “hot spot.” As if the struggle to participate in Zoom mtgs, go online for virtual classes, and work from home weren’t enough stress, now Georgia voters have to think about one extra step just to cast their vote?

The extreme anger, numerous symbols of hate and unbridled #racism on display during the #Capitolriot by many educated and professional people, from across the country, shocked a lot of people. It also reminded many of the #lynchmobs from the Deep South in the #JimCrow era. BUT...
The MOST disturbing element is the enablers in the shadows, who according to law enforcement sources, helped them conceal their weapons, which they retrieved at some point between the rally on the mall and the riot.
Another MAJOR, real-time takeaway that we’re often oblivious to: The subtle hateful acts, and racist behavior unfolding around us in social, work and other community settings, that are masked by smiles and flattering language.

There is modern-day Jim Crow in Indian Territory against Black descendants of slaves owned by Native masters. @RepDebHaaland has supported policies that will allow these policies to continue.

“We are being discriminated against by our own Nation because we are Black.”
“Not because we’re Indians, but because we are Black, we have Black blood. We are counted every year for the money that they get for ALL the government programs and they vote us out every year of those programs.”
“Investigate our nation for the problem that they’re having right now with the Blackness of our skin and the crook in our hair. We ARE Seminoles and we will always be Seminoles. We were born Seminoles. We will die Seminoles and we stand with Seminole Nation.”

BREAKING: Supreme Court deals blow to felons in #Florida seeking to regain the right to vote washingtonpost.com/politics/supre…

The court is requiring voters to pay their old fines and court fees, but I can tell you as an investigator, it’s almost impossible to even find those records. #Florida’s records are a mess, and they (ie. Katherine Harris' GOP successors) like it like that.

A tale of 2 reviews: Recently, my book, “Modern Bonds: Redefining Community in Early 20thc. St. Paul,” has been both lauded and panned. Why? Opposing views on racial justice and its history in MN. Let's take a closer look. #academia #publishing #racism 1/12
The negative review critiqued Modern Bonds for its persistent focus on #racism/racial discrimination & the way I challenge positive narratives about midwestern culture especially compared to other parts of the country. That review is here 2/12 cambridge.org/core/journals/…
Given current discussions & research @ the nature/history of racial discrimination in MN’s Twin Cities it is surprising that the neg review suggests I *overplay* the presence/impact of structural & overt racism there a century ago. #JimCrow #MidwestHist 3/12

Thread #ElectionSecurity is THE #VoterSuppression issue.
1. I want you to listen to this @nytimes #TheDaily podcast about the #GeorgiaPrimary meltdown nytimes.com/2020/06/11/pod… Listen to how they tiptoe around the issue of #votingmachines & don't identify them as the CENTRAL issue.
2. Why are #votingmachines the central #VoterSuppression issue in #GA & many other states? Because they are the new #JimCrow. The machine is the way officials control how many ppl vote & how those votes are counted. It might as well be a literacy test. Could it be more obvious?
3. The podcast notes that the counties that did not get enough voting machines (for example 3, when they needed 8) were the counties with LARGE #Dem populations w/predominantly voters of color. W/a touchscreen voting machine if you don't have enough machines you have long lines.

1/ A conservative friend of mine argued at various times and in different contexts (including racial preferences or affirmative action), that slavery ended in 1865, he had nothing to do with it, so why don't African-Americans "just get over it." #RaceMatters
2/ Yes, slavery ended in 1865 and while it contributed greatly to the wealth of white America, African-Americans were given nothing in return as the government reneged on its promise of 40 acres and a mule after the end of the Civil War. #RaceMatters pbs.org/wnet/african-a…
3/ Compare this to the Homestead Act of 1866 which transferred an area of land in the west the size of CA and TX (10% of all US land) to whites who need only improve it for 5 years and file a deed. aeon.co/ideas/land-and… #RaceMatters
