The NKVD operation was led by Bogdan Kobulov, one of Beria's nastiest henchmen. After reporting to Beria the deportation was complete he was told a large number were still in their villages around the Azov Sea. Fearing Beria's wrath, he panicked and told his men that... 🧵
if any were left alive within two hours 'heads will roll'. The remaining Tartars, men women and children, were loaded onto a barge which was then towed to the deepest part of the Azov Sea and sunk. Those that didn't drown and tried to swim were machine gunned. 
Kobulov, who had also had a hand in the #Katyn murders, eventually got what he deserved. When, after Stalin's death, Beria fell and was shot as a British spy (Moscow lies go way back), Korbulov got his '9 grams' too. Never was a bullet in the back of the head more deserved.

During the trial of the final #Nazi defendant at Nuremberg, Hans Fritzsche, the #Soviet prosecutor brought up Fritzsche's radio broadcast justifying the attack on Poland. Fritzsche responded: it had been "a matter of great satisfaction" that the Soviet press said the same thing.

Hans Fritzsche was only on trial at Nuremberg in the first place because the Soviets demanded it as a substitute for Goebbels. Everyone understood that Fritzsche just did not measure up in terms of responsibility to the other Nazis being tried.

2/Animals played an important role in #WW2. Some were involved actively in the war effort (mules, pigeons) others were pets of soldiers (dogs, monkeys, birds) who boosted morale and often became mascots. #Wojtek was both. But unusually – he was a bear.

3/ 18 y/o Pole Irena Bokiewicz 1st came across this adorable bear cub in Hamadan,#Iran and bought him off some boys for some chocolate. In Aug 1942 he was introduced to the unit that became the 22nd Artillery Supply Company. Sgt Piotr Prendyś was appointed his principal guardian
