As a lifelong Kentuckian my ability to appreciate or just *feel* how the rest of the country perceives the #KentuckyDerby is utterly non-existent. It’s not the Super Bowl. It’s not just reality TV. It’s a thing unto its own. I can’t force myself to have perspective.
Does the ordinary American tune in and do a double-take when they say there are 150,000 people there and those people are dressed for the Hunger Games, and having what appears to be a better time than the viewer has ever had in their life?
It’s problematic and cool and Hunter S. Thompson changed the trajectory of writing with it and there are troubling plantation images and honestly good, clean, fun celebrated by Kentucky ex-pats around the world (as I did) and good god y’all

PHOTO THREAD: Armed pro-Trump and conservative activists with the "Viking Militia" marched to City Hall in Louisville, Kentucky on Saturday, where they were confronted by antifascist and antiracist protesters.

Following a confrontation, the militia group retreated. The counter-protesters celebrated, including chants of "No justice, no derby!" ImageImageImageImage
It was only after the right-wing side of the conflict retreated that police entered the area in a riot formation. ImageImage

More than 100 armed members of the Not F*cking Around Coalition, a Black militia group, are standing in formation outside of Churchill Downs in Louisville, where the Kentucky Derby is being held today.

They outnumber Louisville police officers who are lined up across from them.
"We are the response," the militia group's leader says. "We are not the threat."

It seems someone was just affected by the heat, with the group calling over a medic.

In July, a member of the group passed out in the heat and accidentally fired their gun, striking three people, the group's leader said, per @courierjournal: courier-journal.com/story/news/loc…

Its the 1st weekend of May and that means the Kentucky Derby (not this yr).

Remember last yr when they went to instant replay to decide if a foul was committed?
We can still watch the Derby. At 5:45 pm, there will be a virtual race of prior winners, including my fav Secretariat. There is actual betting and while I don't see how he doesn't win, I'd consider it rigged if there was any other outcome.

Who will watch it?

My all time #KentuckyDerby story from the book:

Working in the book, a stranger walks up to the counter on Friday. Asks “how much will you take on a horse to win the Derby?”

Whatever you want to bet.

(People ask this all the time. Sports are different from parimutuel, meaning
there are limits in sports, not so much in horses)

Guy says “I’ll take the 16 horse to win for 1000.”

I look down at my sheet. It’s Animal Kingdom. 20-1.

I say “Animal Kingdom. 20-1. $1000 to win?”

He looks at me and says yes. Ticket prints.

Awkward silence. Blank stare.
He says, “I’ll take it again.”

I ask “another dime to win on the 16?”

The man nods. Ticket prints.

He goes on to do the oaks/derby double, all/16. He keys the 16 in exactas, trifectas, pick 3s, etc.

I have taken a lot of bets and met so many types over the years in the biz..
