Update on planned Inland Dry Port in Moniya, Ibadan, to serve #LagosIbadanRail:

"If Oyo State is not interested, let us know, so we can talk to another State." -@ChibuikeAmaechi

"Please don't negotiate with Ogun, we want you to partner with us on this." -@seyiamakinde

HM @ChibuikeAmaechi visited the Inland Dry Port (IDP) site in Moniya today. Complained to Governor Makinde that entry is being denied to the Port site, only 40 hectares accessible out of the 90 hectares that the late Gov. Ajimobi made available and granted C-of-O for.
HM Amaechi says it is the responsibility of @oyostategovt to provide infrastructure for the IDP site, including access roads, power supply, 32mX18m entry and exit train bridges, etc. Which is the example @GovKaduna set with the IDP in Kaduna - provided supporting infrastructure.

Minister of Transportation @ChibuikeAmaechi has just been a guest of @seunokin on Channels. Lots of interesting things said about rail and ports. Let me share the ones I can remember

The $1.9bn Kano-Katsina-Maradi Line which will be flagged off this week (groundbreaking) by PMB is one of Nigeria’s strategic attempts to position itself to take advantage of Niger’s landlocked status. The line will connect from Kano to the Apapa Port in Lagos.
According to him, the financing being negotiated will come mostly from Europe.

Also, he says Maradi, the terminus of the line, is only 20km from the Nigerian border. Plan is for Maradi to have an Inland Port Complex that will process goods coming from or going to Apapa Port.

Just seen a very poor piece from @GuardianNigeria. Trying to Compare rail projects while getting basic facts wrong & making embarrassingly pedestrian (no pun intended) points.

#LagosIbadanRail = 156km distance but actual rail length close to 400km because DOUBLE-track—not SINGLE
If you’re going to compare projects get the actual facts, don’t just bring calculator and be calculating nonsense upandahn, lol. So, for example Abuja-Kaduna is 186km distance but single track, while Lagos-Ibadan is shorter distance but double-track. That’s just one example.
Journalistic rigor and common sense demand that if you’re going to compare road or rail projects you can’t simply do ‘cost divided by distance’ and publish a story. Project specs for example have to matter: is it single/double tracks, for e.g. for rail, and No of lanes for roads.

#LagosIbadanRail was a major item on the President’s agenda when he paid a State Visit to China #PMBinChina in April 2016 - the first sub-Saharan Head of State invited to China after the Joburg FOCAC in Dec 2015. Budget Min Udoma followed up with a China visit in July 2016. ImageImageImageImage
The original (unfulfilled) #LagosIbadanRail contract awarded 2012 covered only Ebute-Meta to Ibadan. It was the Buhari Admin that awarded on Nov 30, 2016 an addendum to the contract, extending it to Lagos Port complex in Apapa. Cos PMB insists all Rail should terminate in Ports. Image

In 1893 the British colonial government began construction of a narrow gauge rail line between Lagos and Ibadan, via Abeokuta. Construction of Baro—Kano Railway started in 1907, finished 1911.

The Lagos-Ibadan Line was extended to Minna, to join Baro-Kano, and create Lagos-Kano.
Meanwhile this interesting excerpt from Dele Olojede’s Ten Big Ideas Essay from 2015. Sokoto’s Error. Clearly rail had hugely Transformational impact on Nigerian geography. It’s the reason why obscure places like Kaura Namoda and Kutiwenji got a shot at national renown.
I recall Kaura Namoda popped up in one big GEJ Speech, years ago. I think that was his 2010 declaration speech for the Presidency.

As for Kutiwenji, Nigerians of a certain generation use it to embody the ends of the earth.

For those asking about the Trial Schedule for #LagosIbadan Rail, this is from the NRC MD:

“We will continue to do a return trip every day, where the train leaves Ibadan by 9.00 a.m. and leaves Lagos by 4.00 p.m. But after 21st December, we will be running two return trips.”
He explains the purpose of the Trial Rides: We are “stressing the track so that if there are errors in the formation or any other thing, it will come out before the full commencement of commercial operations in April.” #LagosIbadanRail
“We have about 350 wagons, both for containers and other goods that are coming in on that route. Also we are going to have about 36 coaches for passengers. We intend to run about six return trips between Ibadan & Lagos when we start [full operations].” — MD, NRC #LagosIbadanRail

Nigeria really needs money to power its economy. We are extremely short of revenue and I support the need to urgently look for global investors and wealth managers. The government alone can't raise money to be used for our infrastructure need.

An analytical look at the top 10 economies in Africa will make you shake head for Nigeria and how far we are from the mark. The thread will look into the GDP of these countries, their budget, their population and the VAT being paid by the citizens. Nigeria tops the list
Nigeria has a GDP of $444.92b (2019) with a population of 200m people. Her budget (2019) is $24.6b which is just 5.5% of her GDP. That is the lowest amongst the top 10 economies in Africa and it seems it is the lowest in the world. Her VAT is 5% also the lowest in the world.
