#AndhraPradesh elected 14 women who make up 8% in the 174 seat Assembly in #elections2019. This is lower than 2014, when women MLAs made up 10% (18) of its first legislative Assembly since bifurcation.

#Odisha elected 13 women MLAs who constitute 9% of the State Legislative Assembly- higher than 2014, where women MLAs were 7.5%.

Thread on some #KeyTakeaways from #LokSabhaElections2019 results:
1. There was always a #Modi wave but the #LeLi Commentariat insisted it was an undercurrent against Modi and #BJP.
2. Losses in Rajasthan, MP and Chhattisgarh in 2018 were an aberration and not a trend. 1/n

3. Vote transfers do not happen between historically hostile parties. Anticipated vote transfer did not happen in #UP. SP-BSP #MahaGathBandhan was nonstarter.
4. Never mind the bunk peddled by pop political analysts. #India would prefers Government with single-party majority. 2/n

5. Mamata Banerjee underestimated Hindu backlash to her brazen Muslim appeasement and pandering to illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.
6. She overestimated the ability of party goons to strike fear among voters. It took 34 years for LF to unravel; TMC less than 10 years. 3/n

NDA was given a clear majority wid @BJP4India as single largest party

Celebration started for NDA allies but the opposition parties, arm chair activists, #UrbanNaxals propaganda gang and biased and sold out section of media started attacking @ECISVEEP and churned out different theories about EVM hackings 😱

As #India votes in the final phase of #LokSabhaElections2019, we looked at #WomensRepresentation from 1951-2014 in some states that are voting today- Bihar, UP, MP, Himachal and Rajasthan( not voting today). Except UP, the % of women MPs has declined- a worrying trend.
Thread:

Bihar elected the highest percentage of women MPs to Lok Sabha in 1984. 20% of MPs were women.
Between 2009 and 2014, women MPs declined from 10% to 8%.

Rajasthan saw the highest proportion of women MPs in 1991-28 years ago- when it sent 16% women MPs to Lok Sabha. The decline since then has been dramatic.
Between 2009 and 2014, the proportion of Women elected from the state declined from 12% to 4%.

Tarakeswari Sinha and Sushama Sen were the first women MPs to be elected from Bihar to the 1st Lok Sabha in 1952.

In the early years, percentage of women contestants who won elections was fairly high.
71% in 1957
75% in 1962 of women contestants went on to become MPs in Bihar.

Jharkhand goes to vote in #LokSabhaElections2019 on May 6th for the 4th time since it was formed in the year 2000. We look at women’s representation from the state in this thread.

1 woman MP - Suman Mahto of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) won the bye-poll from Jamshedpur constituency in 2007 after her husband’s assassination.

2004, 2009 and 2014 Lok Sabha elections did not see a single woman MP from the newly formed state.

In Jharkhand, women have done better as independents than as contestants from political parties -
6/9 in 2004
4/14 in 2009
6/18 in 2014 - women candidates contested as Independents.
CPI (ML) gave 3
CPI and JMM gave 1 ticket each to women contestants since 2004.

Most female candidates and their supporters are routinely confronted with some form of gender-based intimidation, which persuades some women to abandon their campaigns. Aggression most commonly takes the form of verbal harassment during campaign meetings.

It is aimed at embarrassing women by questioning their competency or insulting them with accusations of being prostitutes.

As Kerala votes in the #LokSabhaElections2019 tomorrow, we take a look at the history of women's representation from Kerala in the lower house of the Parliament. Thread.

Kerala has had very low representation of women in the Lok Sabha, despite scoring high on many gender indices. Kerala also has more female voters than male.
Between 1951 and 2019, only 8 women have become MPs from Kerala.

The number of women contesting has increased from 1 to 27 in 68 years.
Kerala has 20 seats in the Lok Sabha. 6 of the 16 Lok Sabha tenures did not have any women MPs from Kerala.
These were in 1957, 1962, 1977, 1984, 1996 and 2009.
