Genocides perpetuated on different timescales & with a balance of different techniques (e.g. direct killing, preventing births/kidnapping children, imposing conditions incompatible with life) are all clearly covered under UN genocide def. aptnnews.ca/2019/06/10/inq… via @APTNNews
@APTNNews About 10 years ago i took part in a convo @HaskellU with a Holocaust survivor & Holocaust Museum reps re how to understand different genocides. we imagined a joint meeting betw the Holocaust Museum & NMAI in DC. i don't think it happened, but the convos were illuminating.
@APTNNews @HaskellU i specifically remember the part of the discussion where the Native people at the meeting agreed that one cannot understand genocide in the "Americas" without understanding the simultaneous environmental decimation. Indigenous peoplehood is co-constituted with traditional lands.

I have conflicted feelings about the #Canadian #DDAY commemorations that took place over the last few days, and I struggle during #RemembranceDay because of increasing glorification of war, militarization, and platitudes about honour, duty, and sacrifice. /1
My family has a long history of military service in both World Wars. My great-uncle joined the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, fought at Gallipolli, and died at Beaumont-Hamel. My great-grandfather also enlisted in the RNR and survived the Great War except for a missing finger. /2
My paternal grandfather was a member of the Canadian militia in the interwar years, was a Major during WW2 and remained in Canada throughout the war at Shilo, MB and other bases where he was involved in training enlisted men headed overseas. /3

Reading the National Inquiry Report - its a huge report. So much to go through. My initial thoughts are that I am really pleased that the Inquiry used the word genocide and didn't soften it to "cultural genocide" - and they have extensively detailed why this word is accurate.
Generally the findings are not surprising. Sadly. For decades in a myriad of other reports on Indigenous peoples, these conclusions have been drawn. The Inquiry findings also support what women/families have been saying all along.
The connection between land dispossession and murdered and missing Indigenous people is clear. Colonizers wanted the land for the resources, they set about to swindle, steal and kill for it. They believed Indigenous people were less than. That belief system exists still today.

I can’t read pieces denying the genocide being committed against Indigenous women on this continent. When you have family & friends who’ve gone missing & been brutally murdered & when you’re a survivor, its traumatic & it shows that a lot of people don’t see us as human. #MMIW
If it was their daughters or sisters or mothers going missing and being murdered at the rate of 1 every 12 days, #MMIWG would be acted upon immediately. There comes a point where it’s no longer gross negligence & becomes more like aiding & abetting.
#MMIW is a problem in Canada AND the U.S. One of my relatives was murdered just a few months ago. This is happening RIGHT NOW and we are not disposable. For the love of your god, have some empathy. Do what’s right. Innocent blood cries out for justice. Protect us.

Media outlets and journalists like @globeandmail @EvanDyerCBC @TerryGlavin @jonkay @ChantalHbert have only strengthened the findings of NI #MMIWG #MMIWG2S report and the TRC that media plays an immense role in shaping negative stereotypes of Indigenous people esp women/2S ppl
To debate Inquiry's finding of genocide is to actively undermine the legitimacy of the Inquiry. Most Canadians won't read whole Inquiry report and, as journalists, u have power to make ethical choices: to comment on substantive nature of findings or fuel clickbait controversy
It is undebatable that Inquiry finds Canada in violation of SEVEN international human rights instruments; violation of Charter; violation of treaty obligations; violation of inherent Indigenous rights; violation of domestic human rights Codes. Why not name and emphasize that?

Continuing.. Summary thread on NI #MMIWG #MMIWG2S Report

24. As holders of First Nations, Métis, Inuit rights, there are Indigenous & human rights violations in 4 areas: right to culture, health, security, justice. These rights based on foundational right to self-determination
25. Right to culture: Attacks on culture thru residential schools & ixties Scoop, disenfranchisement thru Indian Act, child welfare. For Inuit, added impacts of mass centralization & relocation. For 2SLGBTQQIA ppl, there is shift from the value of gender-diverse people.
26. Canada uses child welfare to oppress, displace, disrupt & destroy Indigenous families and nations. It is genocidal tool that violates Indigenous rights to govern, is violence against families, disrupts connections, and is linked to violence against Indigenous women & girls

Thread provides cursory ~4pg overview using direct text (doesnt replace tending to whole report and sacred stories w/in. Over 2,380 people participated in Inquiry):
1. In contrast to much previous research that positions Indigenous women as “victims” in need of protection or saving, or that positions their experiences as “less than” knowledge gathered according to Western research methods, the Inquiry centers these voices and wisdom.

A #VeryCanadianGenocide This thread is aimed at ALL Canadians regardless of political stripe. It is time we owned responsibility for our actions, or inaction. None of us are free from responsibility.
Our genocide against the indigenous people in what we call Canada is uniquely Canadian in nature. We didn't go out and slaughter indigenous people indiscriminately. Instead we subjected them to death by a thousand small cuts. #VeryCanadianGenocide
Start by stealing their land and corralling them in tiny reserves with no economic basis for independent survival. #VeryCanadianGenocide

The thousands of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls across Canada in recent decades are victims of a genocide, says the MMIWG national inquiry’s final report. #MMIWG
The report, obtained by CBC News, concludes that a genocide driven by the disproportionate level of violence faced by Indigenous women and girls occurred in Canada through "state actions and inactions rooted in colonialism and colonial ideologies." #MMIWG
The recommendations include a call to change the Criminal Code to treat cases of homicides involving intimate partner violence as first-degree murder, and for a review of the use of the 'Gladue principle' in cases involving the deaths of Indigenous women and girls. #MMIWG

Let's talk about "national emergencies."
There are THOUSANDS of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women in this country. Sisters, daughters, mothers, human beings that disappear without a trace. Where is the declaration over that crisis? #MMIW #MMIWG #MMIR
In a country determined to place nationalism at the forefront of domestic and foreign policy, we have a shocking number of homeless veterans. In states like Arizona, the number of #veteran suicides is 90.4 per 100,000. kdminer.com/news/2019/feb/…

I Hope People Take The Time to Read this and See the Deep Systemic Nature that Makes Justice Unattainable:

Police say dozens of Indigenous women died with 'no foul play,' but families doubt it -

Police Say "No Foul Play"

"Not Suspicious"

In the 32 Cases Below, These Facts Beg to Be Investigated, Yet... They Haven't Been...

This is Not Isolated. This is Common.

THIS IS ALSO WHY AN INQUIRY INVOLVING THE VERY PEOPLE THAT SEE "NO FOUL PLAY" IS AN ISSUE.
Clive Weighill, president of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, acknowledges that some investigations have not been done properly.

SWAT-clad FBI agents stormed into Mike "Thomas Paine" Moore's home and terrorized his wife and young children at gunpoint after rousting them out of bed. Not once, but TWICE, pointing automatic weapons at the family. #JammieJourno #MAGA #SemperFi #QanonArmy #FlyEaglesFly
In response Paine assembled his journalism crew of former feds, launched @true_pundit and literally dismantled the FBI in less than two years with pens and laptops while working from home, often in pajamas. #JammieJourno #MAGA #SemperFi #QanonArmy #FlyEaglesFly @cenbrohen

#MMIWG started when Columbus landed. He stole little prepubescent Native girls & sold them or gave them away as sex slaves. Indigenous women’s and girls bodies have been subjected to conquest just like Mother Earth, the Original Indigenous woman. It never ended.
There are stories of sexual violence & #MMIW throughout Native history. Like the soldiers raping Dakota women within earshot of their husbands & male relatives at prison camps they were sent to after the Dakota War.
One of my grandmothers was murdered by a jealous man who was obsessed with her & claimed to be in love with her. My grandfather never got over it. Her name was Daisy. Before he passed, he mistook me for her. #MMIW
