2022 #Midterms Simulation: #ArtoftheGerrymander

A Republican House win will be built on gerrymanders (TX/GA/FL/TN/LA, etc.)

To illustrate the need for fair maps, I'm calculating the results using the 2022 votes, but if every state had a Democratic gerrymander. #ElectionTwitter ImageImageImageImage
Methodology:

I’ll apply the difference in Presidential margin to the House result. Thanks @davesredist @mikemathieu @vest_team + @DKElections @PoliticsWolf

Keen to see how my maps perform over the decade; tried to comply with state law if partisan intent were allowed to stand.
#ArtoftheGerrymander: #Alabama
Trump 62.0% - Biden 36.6%
Real delegation: 6R-1D
Gerrymandered: 5R-2D
Δ Share of D seats: 14% => 28%
Easy Democratic pick-up of a safe new African American seat.

Today, I’m endorsing two more House Democrats who dream big and fight hard for working people every day:
I’m proud to endorse @IlhanMN for re-election in #MN05 because she’s a champion for the working class, a strong fighter for climate action, a fierce advocate for abortion rights, and one of the leading voices in Congress for canceling student debt. A photo of Ilhan Omar next to text that says Elizabeth Warre
.@JamaalBowmanNY isn’t afraid to challenge the system and fight for real, structural change—from delivering climate action and preventing gun violence to defending abortion rights. I’m glad to endorse him for re-election in #NY16. A photo of Jamaal Bowman next to text that says Elizabeth Wa

Four Republicans running in safe blue districts persuaded GOP donors to part with a combined $41.9 million in the 2020 cycle

District/Cand/Vote Share/$ Raised

#CA43 Collins 28.3% ($10.33M)
#MD07 Klacik 28.4% ($8.29M)
#NY14 Cummings 27.4% ($11.15M)
#MN05 Johnson 25.9% ($12.16M)
Collins' campaign racked up $68,000 in Delta Flights, $30,000 in Uber & Lyft rides, spent tens of thousands at an assortment of luxury hotels and restaurants across the country, and funneled hundreds of thousands in consulting fees to LLCs of questionable provenance.
Cummings' campaign against AOC in #NY14 seems to have existed primarily to ensure direct mail vendors maintained a steady supply of boats and vacation homes...

A quick look at how the race panned out in my neck of the woods: #HD37A.

This was an Obama->Trump district that swung back to Biden this time. There are some more blue-collar burbs here that were open to giving Trump a shot, but looked more like the rest of the burbs in 2020.
In the race for #MNLeg in #HD37A, @ErinKoegel ran roughly even (actually a hair ahead of) the top of the ticket. She was reelected to a third term against Spring Lake Park City Councilman Ken Wendling. Some minimal realignment here from 2018.
In the race for #SD37, @SenJerryNewton was reelected by single digits. In the A portion of the district (which he used to represent in the House) he ran roughly even with Biden and Koegel. This was a rematch from 2016 against @sanford4mn.

Compared to her primary win in 2018, Rep. @IlhanMN did better in almost every precinct in #mn05 this week, with a few exceptions primarily in Edina/SW Minneapolis. My analysis for @MPRnews: mprnews.org/story/2020/08/… Image
@IlhanMN @MPRnews Side-by-side #mn05 maps showing Omar’s primary performance by precinct in 2018 and 2020: ImageImage
@IlhanMN @MPRnews In Omar’s worst precincts in 2018, she combined for 34% of the vote.

In those same precincts in 2020, she combined for 45%.

But she did better in her good precincts, too — 67% in ’18 to 77% in ’20. Improvements across the board.

Huge vote drop in #MN05: with 86K ballots (> 60% of the number of ballots cast in 2018, and expect higher turnout), Reo. Ilhan Omar has a big lead, 57% to 40%.
(Ayanna Pressley is running unopposed in the primary, so this is the 3rd & final of the Squad primaries.)
Now roughly 145,000 ballots counted in #MN05 (that's already MORE than all those cast in 2018, though 24 in-person precincts plus mail ballots remain).

Ilhan Omar leads 57% to 40% (+25K votes).

Here’s a precinct map of Rep. Ilhan Omar’s performance in the 2018 #mn05 DFL primary, in which Omar won 48.2% of the vote against a host of rivals. Today she’s seeking re-nomination for a second term. Image

NEW: Latest absentee ballot stats in today's #mnprimary, as of this morning:

-462,802 ballots returned and accepted

-644,420 ballots requested

-72% rate of return
Early voting alone in the 2020 primary (462,802) easily exceeds the total number of votes cast in the 2016 primary (294,747).
Hennepin County accounts for 35% of the statewide total of returned absentee ballots.

Lots of competitive races in the county: Ilhan Omar faces Antone Melton-Meaux in #MN05, two DFL state lawmakers face strong challengers, and there's an open Minneapolis City Council seat.

Connecticut, Minnesota, Vermont, and Wisconsin are holding Congressional primaries today and Georgia is holding primary runoff elections for several House seats.
In Connecticut, Democrats hold all 5 House seats and none are facing primary challengers. Republicans will challenge Democrats this fall in all 5 seats with 2 primaries in 1st and 2nd Districts held today. GOP winners will face Reps. Larson and Courtney respectively in November.
In Minnesota, #MNSen primary elections are being held today. 1st term Democratic Senator Tina Smith face four DFL primary challengers and 5 Republican candidates including former Rep. Jason Lewis who was endorsed by President Trump are running to be their party's nominee.

Antone Melton-Meaux, who has waged a strong challenge to Ilhan Omar in the #MN05 Democratic primary, rallies supporters in south Minneapolis.

Former U.S. Attorney Andy Luger, civil rights attorney Nekima Levy Armstrong are supporting him. Image
“We don’t need bridge burners. We need bridge builders,” Melton-Meaux says.

Echoing his endorsers, he says Omar has put herself first, over the needs of the district.
Melton-Meaux says the DFL’s planned FEC complaint against him is “a frivolous charge of falsities.”

It’s a “shameful chapter for the DFL and Ken Martin to try to usurp the will of the people,” he says.

STORY: My in-depth look at Ilhan Omar's fight to keep her #MN05 seat in Congress, and a political newcomer's surprisingly strong challenge in the Democratic primary:

fox9.com/news/trump-nem…
Omar was unhappy with my reporting on the $600,000 her campaign paid her husband's consulting firm over three weeks in July.

"It feels like malpractice when it comes to journalism," she said.

She acknowledged the firm was taking a cut of the money, but declined to say how big.
Both candidates are benefiting from out of state money:

-92% of Omar's donations of $200+ are from out of state
-85% of challenger Antone Melton-Meaux's $200+ donations are from out of state

Speaking of #MN05, the one scheduled debate between Ilhan Omar and challenger Antone Melton-Meaux is at 1 p.m. today on WCCO Radio (there was a forum earlier this week, but not a debate).

Watch here: facebook.com/wccoradio/
Omar takes little time to get to Gov. Tim Walz's endorsement -- she mentions it in her first answer.
Pretty cordial so far. Melton-Meaux takes a glancing shot at Omar by saying Washington needs more leadership to fix a "toxic" atmosphere.

Omar responds that she's a progressive leader. She says not everyone who's endorsed her personally likes her, but respects her ability.

Ilhan Omar primary challenger Antone Melton-Meaux’s eye-popping $3.2M in #mn05 has gotten a lot of attention, but note that Republican Lacy Johnson raised *$2M* in Q2, mostly in small donations.

In both parties, it seems, money will gush to people challenging Omar.
Omar, Melton-Meaux and Johnson combined to raise $5.7M in Q2. That’s nearly TWICE as much as the major #mnsen candidates Tina Smith and Jason Lewis raised combined.
Lacy Johnson’s $2M raised comes with a high burn rate — $1.5M spent. That includes spending $714K on direct mail, and nearly $700K on credit card fees to WinRed, the Republican answer to ActBlue. #mn05

This is what happens when rightwing Twitter trolls are treated as authorities on campaign law.

Let’s clear the air.

1. The gov't doesn't fund my campaign. Grassroots donors do.

2. Everything we spend is used for a legitimate expense and paid at fair market value. (Thread)
Will Hailer and Tim founded eStreet after working on Keith Ellison’s campaign for years. Will, who is from MN, managed Keith’s Congressional campaign two cycles and helped increase voter turnout in #MN05.
His work played a major role in keeping Minnesota blue under President Obama, helped defeat an anti-voter statewide constitutional ID, elected a blue state legislative delegation from our district and laid the groundwork that allowed us to keep it blue in 2016.

A year ago today, I was elected to represent #MN05. I ran to help build a movement that reflects working people -- not corporations or the wealthy few.
We didn’t just win the election -- we got 78% of the vote without accepting a cent of corporate money. We connected with our neighbors about what unites us. We came together to fight for the soul of our democracy and the future of our planet.
I say “we” because this campaign isn’t about me. It’s about the people-powered movement we’ve created together. It all comes down to our shared belief that healthcare, education, housing, a fair living wage, and clean air and water aren’t privileges, but human rights.

In 2018, Omar was at 48.2% in a six-way open Dem primary. If it boils down to a one on one, could be highly competitive.
No doubt about it though, #MN05 is a progressive activist district and Omar would still start as the favorite in any DFL fight.
One interesting wild card is what happens in 2022 when MN likely loses a seat. There’s been talk for years about merging the Twin Cities into one uber-urban seat, though I see that as less likely than collapsing a few more rural seats.
