.@GovHolcomb's #coronavirus briefing is about to begin. Judging from some brief and uneventful hot mic moments, at least one topic will be the recognition that this would ordinarily be #indy500 weekend.

And sure enough, Holcomb begins by noting today would have been #CarbDay, before urging people to remember that more important, it's #MemorialDayWeekend, and to honor men and women in uniform.

Holcomb: "While we won't have a race this weekend, we hopefully will have one in August, and maybe in July as well." (July is the #Brickyard400, in theory.)

It is also Memorial Day.
Here is my birthday wish: Please take a moment today - while you’re surrounded by loved ones, celebrating in perfect security - to remember the millions of American men & women never got to see their next birthday sacrificing for us.

They gave their lives so we could live in the greatest country in history.
We became the greatest country in the world because of the sacrifices of men & women far braver & better than the rest of us.
Their sacrifices created this incredible nation we are privileged to call home

It’s the honor of my life to be able to work with many veterans & American heroes. Their stories make America possible. Let’s remember those who gave the last, full measure of devotion to make this the best nation on earth.

This #MemorialDayWeekend I also remember LtCol Mario Carazo “Sugar Bear” - At Camp Leatherneck in Afghanistan in 2010, Sugar Bear worked side by side with me planning air operations for 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing @USMC month after month, when he wasn’t flying. 1/4

Sugar Bear and I would have animated discussions about sports, or politics almost daily…but what I remember the most was he would stay up late at night so he could call his wife and kids on the phone during the daytime (their time). He was absolutely devoted to them. 2/4

One day Sugar Bear never returned from his AH-1 Cobra helicopter mission, shot down by Taliban forces. I know he believed in the fight and that his service was important to our nation. He was a true patriot. 3/4

KIA Sept. 5 2005 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his combat patrol in Tal Afar, Iraq.

“Williams made the ultimate sacrifice on Sep. 5, 2005 during Operation Restoring Rights – a battle to lift the pall of fear from the people of Tall Afar, defeat the forces of terrorism and hatred, & secure Iraq and our own nation from terrorists whose brutality knows no limits.

”All of us were deeply saddened by the loss of Jeffrey. He was a larger than life young man. He was a courageous soldier who volunteered to join our security detachment. Today, thinking of Jeffrey and his ever-present smile makes me smile. He had a wonderful sense of humor.

I’d like to share a story about my friend Dee “Piston” Imlay, who died in the cockpit of his F-15E Strike Eagle during a deployment over 7 years ago.

It contains a cameo by Kelis’s #Milkshake—more on that soon.

I first met Piston in the F-15E fighter training unit at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, NC. It's where Strike Eagle fighter pilots and WSOs (back-seaters) go to learn to fly the jet.

We were in the same class, assigned to the 333d Fighter Squadron Lancers.

After the FTU, nearly half the class got stationed at Mountain Home AFB, Idaho. Piston and I were among them. But we went to different squadrons.

I went to the 389th Fighter Squadron (Thunderbolts), and he went to the 391st (Bold Tigers).

#MemorialDayWeekend is more than 3 days off – it’s a somber reminder of the true costs of war. Let's remember the fallen & reflect on living in a way that honors their sacrifices. I’ll be remembering my fellow IL Guardsmen like First Lt. Brian Slavenas & Staff Sgt. Bill Chaney.

I’ll be thinking about the CH-47 Chinook helicopter crew that was shot down in ‘03 near Fallujah. I’ll also be thinking about the sacrifices made by the 2 million women who’ve served in uniform during every period of conflict we’ve endured – whether or not they were recognized.

In the Vietnam War, we lost 8 women. Capt. Mary Therese Klinker was a flight nurse w/the 10th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron. Her C-5A Galaxy crashed in Saigon while evacuating orphans. She was posthumously awarded the Airman’s Medal for Heroism & Meritorious Service Medal.
