My latest @locusmag column is "The Swerve," a short essay about the shape that hope takes when happy endings are off the table:

Five years ago, Dulles Airport, the first night of the #MuslimBan. A night that shifted the direction of so many lives, mine included. What our community endured (and continues to) has been recorded on the Wall of Shame.

facebook.com/hassanmahmad/v…
A year into the next admin, and guess what? Not much has changed. I remember 5 years ago how the stark visibility of prejudice-I felt so alien-successfully jammed up the fragile mechanisms of due process. We all blamed the admin, as if change is measured in 4 year terms.
But as our Black friends were trying to tell us, that prejudice has been around a long, long time. I today remember the words of Judge Hassan El-Amin of PG County Circuit Court, speaking to a mostly immigrant Muslim crowd after 9/11: "We're right here. All you gotta do is ask!"

Today is the 5th anniversary of the passing of the #MuslimBan. The hateful act has left families separated and thousands of people still unable to enter our nation. It's not enough to end the ban. @POTUS must address its ongoing harmful effects.
Last Friday, we joined @NoMuslimBanEver, @NIACouncil and over 100 other organizations in a letter urging @POTUS to provide relief to those still impacted by Trump’s Muslim and African Bans.
Over 41,000 visa applicants from the banned countries were denied as a result of Trump's travel bans. People who won their diversity visas were denied this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for themselves & their families. They need a new chance to claim their lost diversity visas.

Today marks 4 years since the Muslim Ban 3.0 was issued. Over 100 muslim and immigrant organizations are coming together to call on the Senate to pass the #NoBanAct, ensuring that the #MuslimBan and #AfricanBan never happen again.

➡️ nomuslimbanever.com/NoBanAct

#NoMuslimBanEver
If passed, the #NoBanAct would limit U.S. immigration law so that no future president can single-handedly issue bans that bar immigrants based on their national origin or religion, as Trump did with the #MuslimBan.

At a time when the targeting of Black migrants is on display more than ever, we must take action to ensure that legislation is adopted that will protect our communities.

Who is the anti-immigrant movement?

It's time to pull off their masks. My colleague @MarkPotok with @C4ARR put together profiles of key players in this network.

They're the reason we're in this mess.
1. Dan Stein

President of Tanton flagship @FAIRImmigration and faithful acolyte of John Tanton, racist architect of the movement.

Wants to bring back racial quotas into immigration.
Thinks Latinos and Muslims are a threat to American identity.
2. Mark Krikorian

ED of @CIS_org, the Tanton "think tank."

Virulent Islamophobe and white nationalist sympathizer.
Pushes racist agenda under academic guise.
Thinks immigrant children should be sent to Guantánamo.

I spent the morning today visiting the processing center for Afghan evacuees outside Dulles Airport.

Several agencies were there: USAID, FEMA, the Army, and of course the State Department.
2000 more are expected today. More are coming.

Most are paroled into the US, with very unofficial documents clearly hastily created.

There are some US citizens, green card holders, and those with approved immigrant visas and Special Immigrant Visas (given to translators/allies)
And a lot of mixed status families.

There is very tight security (I only got in because I was connected to one of the other volunteer orgs.)

I'm told that once they leave, they're given the choice to go to a military base where there is legal support.

1/ Today, the Biden admin said it would continue to defend a Trump-era rule requiring visa applicants to register their social media handles with the U.S. government.

knightcolumbia.org/blog/biden-adm…
2/ The social media registration requirement has rotten roots. The State Dep’t adopted it following Trump’s “extreme vetting” order in connection with the #MuslimBan
3/ And it’s the subject of an ongoing 1A challenge filed by @knightcolumbia @BrennanCenter and Simpson Thacher on behalf of @TheDocSociety and @IDAorg.

1. A crucial piece by @JessLee_DC on how anti-China rhetoric fuels violence against Asian-Americans.

In this thread, I add some of my own thoughts based on the Iranian-American experience.

responsiblestatecraft.org/2021/03/21/our…
2. First of all, Jess is right in the sense that the heated anti-China not only doesn't advance US interest, it also pits Americans against each other here at home. It's a lose-lose.
3. Jess rightly argues that Biden’s condemnation of the murders in GA misses the mark because it fails to acknowledge that Washington’s over-the-top rhetoric on China fuels an atmosphere of fear and anxiety, which boomerangs in the form of violence against Asian Americans.

BREAKING: Ok #Noban tweeps, DOS has completed the review of the processes affected by the revocation of the #MuslimBan (PP9645 & 9983). Here is the half-a*s path forward
1/ If your immigrant visa (IV) was refused on or after 20 Jan '20 due #MuslimBan *YOU MAY* seek re-adjudication without resubmitting DS260 or paying any additional fees, provided the underlying visa petitions remain valid. You'll get priority adjudication. AWSOME news!
2/ If you IV was denied on account of #MuslimBan *before* 20 Jam '20 may you can request a reconsideration of the 212f refusal but you
-- must submit new application
and
-- pay a new application fee.

Absolutely unconscionable!

So, lots of immigration policy news tonight, and unlike the bad days of the Trump administration, these announcements are worthy of a nuanced look. Here’s my two cents
🪙🪙 1/9:
First, it’s clear that the Biden team has smart, thoughtful people with deep expertise working on immigration policy. They understand that #immigration is not just a @DHSgov thing, and they’re willing to look at all facets of the issue in every agency 2/9.
Second, though folks like to say that Trump built an invisible wall, it was really more of an obstacle course. The goal, of course, was to make it impossible for anyone to come & stay here. Read Sarah Stillman’s excellent @newyorker piece for more 3/9: newyorker.com/magazine/2021/…

I don’t know who needs to hear this but Trump officials shouldn't be able to rehabilitate their reputations just bc they resigned two weeks before his term is over or put out a milquetoast statement.

The media has a responsibility to name them as the violent enablers they are.
Mick Mulvaney was the architect of some of the worst parts of the Trump administration, including its willfully negligent #COVID19 response, and has been using his ties to Trump to raise money for his hedge fund.
John Kelly was the DHS Sec who first enforced Trump’s #MuslimBan and is on the board of a company that runs for-profit immigrant detention centers. All of a sudden he wants to decry Trump’s conduct toward “women and minorities”? Opportunism at its lowest.

Someday someone’s going to write a well-received book that compiles the public statements top lawyers in this regime made and weighs them against the statements made when subject to Rule 11 in court pleadings and tell the story of the constant delta between those statements.
Im talking about political appointees who are also lawyers, defending the policies and saying things out of court, on the one hand, versus DOJ lawyers signing pleadings and lawyer who sign declarations, on the other.
You could spend an entire chapter on the lies federal courts have caught DHS in and documented and threatened to sanction them for. Judge Hatter. Hamama. The Massachusetts covid litigation. The Mesa Verde covid litigation. Fraihat. DACA. Ms. L.

So. Many. Habeas. Cases.

THREAD: Congress is voting on the #NoBanAct today in a chance to finally repeal the Muslim Ban. This is a historic moment - the first time a Muslim civil rights bill is being voted on.
"Today is historic, as the #NoBanAct is the first bill to pass the house that directly addresses Muslim civil rights. And we would not be here today without the courage of Muslims and allies across the country." @RepJayapal
From @RepJerryNadler of NY: “When the Trump administration introduced the first version of the [#MuslimBan], it was immediately apparent that it was unconstitutional, discriminatory, and morally reprehensive.”

#DACA survives. Here's what everyone needs to know. (Thread)

THE OPINION

The revocation of DACA was unlawful. But to be clear: this was *not* a decision upholding the constitutionality of DACA. And that underscores the 1st takeaway: Celebrate, but this is NOT over.
What was illegal about it? Bluntly: they screwed up. Trump, Miller, then-Secy Elaine Duke, then-AG Jeff Sessions, and later then-Secy Nielsen all thought they could simply cancel DACA and not have to show their math. The Supreme Court did not let them get away with it.
If a government agency puts forth a rule, it has to show its math.

Imagine a rule that all cars have to have either airbags or automatic seat belts as a secondary form of safety. Then the agency, showing its math, decides that automatic seat belts (remember those?) don't work.

The US has the highest number of #COVID19 cases globally.

So instead of:

ℹ️Providing accurate information to the public.
😷Ensuring frontline workers have access to PPE.
🏥Mass producing ventilators.
🔬Scaling up testing.

The president announced an #ImmigrationBan

Why?👇
Because when the administration mishandles a crisis, immigrants become the scapegoat.

Racism, xenophobia & misinformation are used to enact anti-immigrant policies.

The impact? Immigrants disappear from their communities, families get separated & ppl die in detention centers.
All while the real crisis is left unaddressed.

There is 0 public health rationale for an #ImmigrationBan—especially b/c immigrants are crucial to the nation’s response to the pandemic.

Immigrants are disproportionately in frontline jobs at hospitals, grocery stores & farms.

What makes you hopeful? Seriously. Share it!

If you’re like me, you could use a few reasons to keep your head up.

Here are 50 reasons to stay hopeful from the past 3+ years.

That night, a federal judge in NY issued a stay allowing people stranded in airports to temporarily avoid deportation.

@_SJPeace_ How do you feel about #tRump’s #MuslimBan that has put hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees at risk of return to #Syria, which has happened. I have friends in Lebanon who have a baby & toddler who have experienced terrible discrimination have lost their tiny, mouldy home.
@_SJPeace_ The husband was fired from his job 3 months ago along w/all other Syrians. They were 3 months $800 behind in rent & have been waiting for 6 years on @Refugees list. They are now out of their place, have no $$ to feed their children & are begging me to help them. 💔What do I say?
@_SJPeace_ @Refugees You have a voice that reaches a lot of people. They will listen to you. Would you consider being a voice a voice for displaced Syrians & #SyrianRefugees? I’ve followed you for a long time but don’t remember you discussing #Syria. #IdlibUnderFire

Here’s how the #TrumpAdministration likes to “celebrate" anniversaries and global days of recognition. A thread.
Last year on #WorldRefugeeDay, 6/20/19, a day internationally observed and dedicated to raising awareness of the situation of refugees throughout the world, CBP announced that they were at capacity + zero asylum seekers were processed at the San Ysidro POE.
This year on the one year anniversary of the human rights dumpster fire that is #MPP, @DHSgov decided to “celebrate” by proudly announcing that it was extending the class to include Brazilians. #MPP originally meant for Spanishing-speaking Central Americans has resulted in . .

Trump administration just announced new immigration restrictions, just about 3 years after the #MuslimBan. It applies to: Myanmar, Nigeria, Tanzania, Kyrgyzstan, Eritrea, Sudan. Lots to unpack here, so keep reading.
4 out of 6 of these countries are in Africa. Trump has never wanted immigration from Africa, remember this remark about "shithole countries"? 4 of them are also majority Muslim, so there's def a pattern here.
The bulk of the restrictions apply to immigrant visas -- ppl from Nigeria, Myanmar, Kyrgyzstan & Eritrea who would mostly be coming to unite w family in the U.S. can't do that anymore. As we've said before, these bans operate as #familyseparation policies. thehill.com/opinion/immigr…
