Two lawyers who successfully fought to end #India’s colonial-era laws that criminalized same-sex relations have come out as a couple. Sending love and solidarity to @MenakaGuruswamy and @arundhatikatju… h/t @_drongo #LGBTQ 🏳️‍🌈🌈
"For queer folk in all post-colonial countries, the governments have to understand that these (anti-sodomy) were not our laws," @MenakaGuruswamy told CNN's Fareed Zakaria. Photo via @arundhatikatju

Here's a challenge: In #Nigeria, it's not enough to be good at what you do. You must be good and political; good and cultural; good and tolerant of deeply disturbing mediocre shit.
When the emotional pressure becomes to much, many good people simply give up and become bad.
You cannot survive and thrive in #Nigeria without a tribe that validates and upholds a set of shared values. Riding solo doesn't work. Too many forces will come against you.

@jason_kint Thanks @jason_kint for your informative quick-take on why serious media is in crisis. Here are a few pertinent points from my two+ decades in online publishing (that includes long association for @allafrica w/ Google). 1/4
@jason_kint @allafrica (1) Discovery: Google has pushed search results for reputable news off 1st screen in favor of more lucrative Google ads
(2) Design: Publishers are pressured to adopt AMP which "tightens Google's grip on the web"
@jason_kint @allafrica (3) Data: Google assigned 'all liability' to publishers for any violations of GDPR

(4) Dollars: Having "cornered" ad serving & dominated ad demand, Google can (and does) effectively set pricing of ads in its favor

One of #Nigeria's leading road transporters, @PMTNigeria has about 65 terminals in 26 states, employing thousands directly or indirectly & facilitating integration across the country. It's supposed to be 1 of those SMMEs that govt all over the country shd support
Early in 2018, as the rat-race towards #NigeriaDecides2019 got underway, the then governor of Imo State, @realRochas, approached the Chairman of @PMTNigeria, Chief for support to his partisan political plans. The company told the governor it did not do partisan politics
The week after the company rebuffed @realRochas, the Governor, in an act of reprisal, ordered the sealing up of the company's loading bay in Owerri, capital of Imo State. The company's workers & contractors in the State were put out of work. It was to be sealed for over 1 year.

While we go about our business today, just a quick reminder that #Nigeria is about to replace #India as the country with the largest number of people practising #OpenDefecation in the Whole Wide World. #Thread…
Yup, we are suffering from a chronic defecation problem. @UNICEFNigeria says 47 million of us still prefer open fields, bushes, stadium, motor parks, water bodies, gutter and other open spaces to do our 💩 business. Special hailings to commuters that travel the highways. 🙌
The Public Health impact of this menace is quite alarming. 122,000 Nigerians, including 87,000 children under the age of five die every year from diarrhoea, intestinal worm infections, cholera, hepatitis, typhoid and other preventable sanitation-related illnesses.

#Nigeria's National Human Rights Commission, @NHRCTweets, a public body bound by the Freedom of Information Act (FoIA), has in the past week ordered all its staff to sign & subscribe to forms of "Oath of Secrecy" - very much like a #SecretCult
Issued under directive of the Executive Secretary of @NhrcTweets, the #SecrecyOath applies to all staff of @NhrcTweets. The leadership of the Commission claims that the oath of Secrecy is required by Rule 62 of the Commission's Standing Orders & Rules of Procedure, #STORP
Contrary to the claims of the leadership of @NhrcTweets, however, the Standing Orders & Rules of Procedure, #STORP, of the Commission don't in any way support #SecrecyOaths. Quite clearly, the leadership have chosen to mis-represent the relevant rules of the #STORP

It is a pity that we have normalised branding people the moment they criticise the APC government.

That bad habit of hurling insults rather than addressing the points raised will stay with us for another two generations at the minimum.
I’ll tell a little story, rehash the history many of us know…

On 8/2/15, I made the decision to vote for Muhammadu Buhari, and I published a piece about it in @dailypostngr the next day.
A few days later, I was a part of the campaign trail, and I ended up addressing the APC Youth Summit in Abuja on 21/3/15, a week before the election.

Here's the speech for those who are interested in reading -

1 good thing abt the on-going controversy over #RUGAMania in #Nigeria is it has brought attention back to what cn be done to address the herder-farmer crises. Since ystrday, a few more ppl have askd me abt the National Livestock Transformation Plan #NLTP. Here's a little more....
The #NLTP process began in 2016 led by @AuduOgbeh's Fed Ministry of Agriculture & with support from the Vice-President, @ProfOsinbajo, who chairs the National Economic Council (NEC). The NEC, in turn, includes all state governors in its members.
The struture & process was inclusive. Consultations took place at state & zonal levels, culminating in a national conference 11-15 Sept 2017 in Abuja with over 770 participants. The National Conference adopted a report which was transmitted to @AuduOgbeh in December 2017

Some ppl are asking me why I say @GarShehu's statement of yesterday on #Nigeria's #RUGAmania was an artifice. All u need to do is take a copy of the National Livestock Transformation Plan, #NLTP & u'll not struggle to find out why. Here's an intro to what the Plan is about....
There are various categories of ppl involved in the #RUGAMania conversation. There're those who:
(a) won't do their home work
(b) can't do their home work
(c) cldn't be bothered abt home work
(d) are allergic to facts
(e) are genuinely curious.
Only the last deserve attention.
The #NLTP development process was long, careful & rigorous. It involved zonal level consultations, a national conference, a scientific report, a mapping process & selection of the 7 frontline states - Adamawa, Benue, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Plateau, Taraba, & Zamfara.

St John's Anglican Church, Igbein, Abeokuta, was founded in 1947. Its 1st Vicar was Samuel Ajayi Crowther, Herbert Macaulay's grand-dad. It is a truly historical piece of architecture with unique character & dating from well b4 #Nigeria was thought of.
In any sensible country, St. John's Igbein will be a protected or listed building be an acknowledgement of the historical character of the building & will make it difficult to simply destroy the building at a whim
Rather than do this, some Philistines in Cassock have decided that the church needs to be uprooted & replaced with a new piece of garish architecture. The idea of knocking down St. John's Igbein or disposing of it wld be unimaginable in a civilized country

Day 2. Still pre-conference. I must confess that while taking notes today, I sincerely wondered to myself: how will I condense this much information in a way that its essence is not lost? So much was said; so much needs to be done. Oya grab your seat. @LagosStudies #lsa2019
The first panel was the Gender and Academy II. Panelists were Yetunde Zaid, Lynn Schler, Bamidele Wale-Oshinowo, Oyeronke Oyewunmi, Mojubaolu Olufunke Okome (@mojubaolu) and Taibat Lawanson (@TaibatLawanson) The first question shows that mentorship comes in various forms.
Who was your first mentor?:

"My first mentor was my Ph.D. supervisor. He was good @ treating students equally&that gave everyone a sense of confidence when starting out with their career. It distilled any competition that we might have&developed a sense of community.” Schler

#FB will soon learn that its vaunted plans for #Libra are going nowhere
#FB’s #Libra is like when the Gates Foundation spent $8mm on an “ewallet” for #Haiti after 2011. The app designers didn’t talk to 1 ordinary Haitian merchant, school, or remittance sender. They ended up begging Western Union + local banks to trade credits for cash. 1/n
#FB’s #Libra is just another “engineer-driven” app. #FB is not exactly belovef these days, having hacked democracy, + trust is everything in payments. The world’s central banks+ anti-money laundering agencies are not going to roll over + give up control to Zuckerburg. 2/n

#FreeExpression is a foundational value in a democratic society because it makes choice possible between competing visions of how to organize society. It also makes it possible for citizens to convey their views to leaders, hold inform one another & hold govt to account
So, #FreeExpression is worth standing up for & defending. It also means those charged with regulating it have a high duty to do their job with a high sense of responsibility & due regard to the underlying constitutional & civic value in free expression…
For a long time, the way in which #Nigeria's broadcasting regulator, the NBC, undertakes its work has been open to question. Some of the queries it issues to broadcasters leave it open to charges of partisanship & clearly show no regard for constitutional values
