1/On Friday. Dec. 23, Judge Ryu granted a preliminary injunction to stop #SanFrancisco from enforcing ordinances that prohibit involuntarily homeless individuals from sitting, lying, or sleeping on public property. However, this does not mean #sweeps will cease completely.
2/The ruling, “does not prevent the city from enforcing laws against public nuisance, protecting accessibility and sidewalk path of travel, or abating unsanitary conditions.”

Our friends over at @fairvote have run the Cast Vote Record for the #Oakland Mayoral race. Here's a thread of initial findings with more to come.
This election wasn't as divided as perceived with plenty of both Sheng and Loren voters ranking each other 2nd on their ballot. 22% of Sheng voters included Loren as their #2 with 24% of Loren voters including Sheng as their #2 ranking.
Sheng was the consensus winner with at least 63% of voters ranking her on their ballot. This includes the 22% of Loren voters who included her as their #2 candidate.

THANK YOU election officials/poll workers/volunteers who worked & continue to work to ensure that #Midterms2022 are carried out successfully. Nationally this election has been free of major issues, and Americans should feel confident about the voting/vote counting process. Image
While many are focused on the horse race for control of #Congress it is worth noting that #Midterms2022 produced a number of pro-democracy gains through ballot initiatives, many of which received strong majority support. #DemocracyWins
#Arizona: The “Voters Right to Know Act” (Prop. 211) brings transparency to elections by requiring election spenders to disclose the original sources of their funding. Thank you @TerryGoddardAZ for leading on this effort. thehill.com/homenews/campa…

𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚 ⚠️ this video provided to me by Kon “Patrick” Fung’s family is stunning & disturbing.

2 suspects approach 52-y/o Fong & demand he get out. When he doesn’t he is shot & killed.

The whole thing took less than 5 secs Sunday AM.

(Thread ⬇️) #StopAAPIHate #Oakland
Patrick drove for Uber. “It’s b/c of his job, his hard work that he got killed.”

This crime happened close to Little Saigon which has been hit hard by crime & violence.

“Why us? We are hard working…why are we being targeted over and over again?” said Judy. #StopAAPIHate
This family is demanding changes. Fung’s brother Ivan says:

“There’s far too much gun violence. If the gvt can put 2gether restrictions on gun control it’ll help our society.”

She didn’t notice anybody following her, but as she walked to the passenger side to get her bag noticed “4 or 5 guys” approach. At least one had a firearm.

As she ran away, one suspect “took my keys from my hand and pushed me to the ground…I hit my head.” (2/5) #StopAAPIHate
Seconds later, her car was gone & susps escaped in a nearby vehicle.

Along with her purse and laptop, her best friend’s wedding dress for her upcoming fall wedding was stolen.

🚨 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗪𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 🚨 “We are really scared.”

A man who works around 27th & Valdez in Oakland told me he saw 3 men jump out of a car around 4pm today.

Witnesses & sources tell me the men were armed. The Asian victim was assaulted & his LV backpack stolen. (1/4)
You can hear the victim yell “please!” multiple times as a nearby car honks.

2 dif ppl took these videos & requested anonymity but gave me permission to post them to raise awareness.

The victim runs after the getaway car in an attempt to stop the suspects. (2/4) #oakland

Journalism exists in a political economy of commercial and philanthropic capital that skews its practice along class lines, and produces institutional corruption (per @Lessig) that disrupts trust and opens the door for mass-media demagoguery and political extremism.
Commercial news cannot compete in the attention economy unless it jumps the shark via lolcats, "if it bleeds it leads," and pandering to ideological politics; nonprofit news cannot survive unless it caters to donors, who skew affluent, thus perpetuating existing class bias.
One solution may be co-op organizing that aggregates community economic power and trust around journalism practice as public service outside the market. A new co-op model in #Oakland that confronts power imbalances in real estate offers an example of this: shareable.net/real-estate-co…

Speaking of mass robberies in the Bay Area…a family-owned jewelry shop in Oakland’s Chinatown was targeted around 1:40AM.

The owner tells me about a dozen people were seen on surveillance trying to break in.

You can see a crowbar & what appears to be a carjack (1/4) #BayArea
The people are unable to break through the metal gate installed earlier this year. (They were robbed in Feb.)

I shortened the 4m vid but here’s the end where you can see everyone run into waiting cars nearby.

"We just feel so numb & disgusted.” says the owner. (2/4) #oakland
A good neighbor called 9-1-1 to alert OPD.

BTW: this shop was the one I reported on a few months ago. A family member witnessed women get robbed & dragged on the ground outside.

He ran after them & threw a stool to stop the getaway car. (3/4) #oakland #aapi

Fresh October home builder survey results. Top themes: 1) Builders are finally lifting sales caps (though not all). 2) Lack of lots & land development delays will hold back growth in 2022. 3) Most builders expect prices to keep rising. Market commentary to follow…
#ColoradoSprings builder: “One cautious trend to watch is single-family rental businesses paying more for land than builders. This will suck up trade capacity & supply at a time we can't afford it.”
#Denver builder: “Traffic & sales definitely slowing down, but also following a more seasonal pattern as compared to 2020. Resale inventory is still historically low. Rents are skyrocketing again.”

In #Oakland today there was a "Stand up for a Safe Oakland" rally against gun violence

Several #Antifa, who appear to be all white, showed up to "protest" by drowning out mostly black speakers who were naming and remembering homicide victims
Some were upset as it was pretty clear to them the #Antifa were not from around there

Oakland has seen a massive spike in homicide with 71 so far this year in only July. There were 85 total in 2020 and 68 total in 2018

My mom & dad bought their first house in #PaloAlto for about $16,000. At the time, it cost about 5 cents per hour to park downtown. Today, that same house would cost ~$3 million & it’s free to park downtown.

We have completely solved our affordable housing problem–for our cars🧵
In 2019, surveyors counted 313 homeless people in #PaloAlto, up 99% from 2013. They found no homeless cars.

How did #PaloAlto become a city of expensive housing and free parking? In 1951, Palo Alto adopted a new zoning ordinance. The new law limited housing and required parking.
