#CONTINUE Chung Pui-kuen is on the witness stand for the 3rd day. Today defense counsel Audrey Eu began to ask Chung questions about how the prosecution described what happened in Hong Kong in 2019 and after #NSL came in force and the 17 "seditious" articles.
For background this is an old thread about the prosecution's case against #StandNews and what "judicial notice" they wanted the court to take in order to determine the nature of the offence:
The prosecution cited the opening paragraph describing HK's situation since the protests in 2019 in a resolution by the NPCSC on May 28, 2020 to enact an #NSL for Hong Kong. The paragraph said since the #antiELAB protests in 2019, "anti-China destabilising forces in Hong Kong"...

Glad to have given an interview on China-UK relations to Global Times @globaltimesnews, which was published on 17 August, 2020 in the newspaper and on the website. The full transcript of the interview is as follows: globaltimes.cn/content/119790… Image
Q: On UK's moves on BNO, Huawei&Hong Kong, what counter-measures will China take?
A: The UK Government, in disregard of China's solemn representations, is bent on carrying out political manipulation on the issues of BNO and the extradition treaty with Hong Kong. Image
A: The Chinese side strongly opposes such acts of the UK side which openly go against its own pledge, violate international law and the basic norms governing international relations, and blatantly interfere in Hong Kong affairs, which are internal affairs of China.

🚨 I've decided to put together a THREAD of prominent voices for #HongKong from around the word. Start with U.S. politicians. Note how @RepGregSteube is saying (as I read it) the newly-revealed #HK #NationalSecurityLaw will "threaten democracy around the world." 👇👇👇
[2/n] @HawleyMO: "Question now is whether Beijing will use this as a pretext to jail pro-democracy leaders."
[3/n] @RepJimBanks highlights how the #HongKong #NationalSecurityLaw "prohibits 'collusion' w/ foreign govs or institutions, which could target those who've lobbied the U.S. Congress for sanctions."

#NOW at Pacific Place in Admiralty, security guards of the mall put on notice asking people not to shout, display banners or flags and not to obstruct passage but the growing crowd on the footbridge responded with loud chanting of slogans.
Oral warning from police of sweep and arrests if people continue to join the “unauthorised assembly” outside the Pacific Place mall.
One year ago young man Leung Ling-kit fell from the mall after hanging some protest banners. People gather today to mourn anniversary of his death
This man in yellow raincoat was just released after police search. He showed a paper with the words 永垂不朽 (to be remembered forever).

A few foreign politicians recently made various comments on the #nationalsecuritylegislation for #HongKong. But I wonder if they had ever read through the Sino-British Joint Declaration before commenting, and if they can tell the detailed content of the #JointDeclaration.
The Sino-British #JointDeclaration is an important document concerning #HongKong's return to #China and relevant arrangements during the transition period.

It consists of eight paragraphs and three annexes.
The full text:
cmab.gov.hk/en/issues/jd2.…
Paragraph 1 stipulates that 🇨🇳 resumes the exercise of sovereignty over #HongKong.

Paragraph 2 provides that 🇬🇧 restores #HongKong to #China. After #HongKong's return to #China, these two paragraphs have been completely fulfilled.

1. @thetimes yesterday published a piece by former UK Foreign Secretary.

It misrepresented facts and China’s policies, not short of conjecture, delusion, spreading fear.

I share the following observations
2. China is not abandoning “#onecountrytwosystems”by introducing #nationalsecuritylegislation.

China will unswervingly, fully and faithfully implement the principles of "#OneCountryTwoSystems," "the people of Hong Kong governing HK," and a high degree of autonomy.
3. Safeguarding national security is a core element of "#OneCountryTwoSystems".

It is also the precondition for this policy to succeed

The Decision is designed to consolidate the foundation of “#onecountrytwosystems” and keep it on the right track.

#OMG: Three statements by the #hkgov in one night:
1) liaison office in hk is covered by #basiclaw article 22
2) a statement replaced, and removed anything related to article 22
3) liaison office in hk is set up by the central gov, not those “departments” mentioned in article 22
Earlier on Friday, the liaison office already rebuted, arguing the two agencies were not circumscribed by Article 22 of the #BasicLaw, which states no department directly under the central gov may interfere in local matters.

First statement: 6:52 pm sat
2nd one: they replaced the first one on sat night - keeping the 6:52 pm time stamp
3rd one: 00:27am Sunday

1/ It's terribly alarming that #HKGov barred Kenneth Roth from #HongKong for no reason. It well illustrates how #Hkgov now cooperates with #CCP to deliberately undermine our international human rights system.
2/ That is how #China’s global censorship regime works. First UK activist @benedictrogers, followed by reporters like @VJMallet and academics like @DanGarrett97, and now even US human rights advocates @KenRoth were denied entry.
3/ Bit by bit, #Beijing tightens its red line on #Hongkong, isolates this international city from the world, and puts #onecountrytwosystems in peril. The case is the best indicator of #Beijing ’s authoritarian expansion and weakening human rights situation in #China.

1/ Congratulations to #Taiwan’s new President #TsaiIngWen @iingwen and also #DPP @DPPonline under her lead! 👏🏻#Taiwan2020 #TaiwanElection
2/ Also glad to know many young politicians can successfully take seats in the legislature, such as #DPP’s Lai Pin-yu, Hong Shen-hang, #TSP’s Chen Bo-wei, and Independent @FreddyLim. Unfortunately, it is really pity that @enoch_tw can't make it this time.
3/ Today is the day for the majority of #Taiwaneses to choose their fate, to safeguard their democracy and freedoms, and most importantly, to say no to #CCP's authoritarian invasion. People of #Taiwan also show the world their defiance of #Beijing’s lie of #onecountrytwosystems.

1. Given China's #recenthistory, did anyone truly think "#OneCountryTwoSystems" would work?

I don't think I have much say in what's happening in #HongKong, given that I've only lived there for the first four years of my life & have visited there a handful times as an adult. #hongkongcanadian Photos From the Hong Kong Extradition Protests nyti.ms/2X3ywPH
However I have loved ones living there & my grandparents had worked hella hard to move to HK where they ended up having my parents & them having me. I've always been proud to say that I was born in HK while living in Canada & it's always been joyful talking about my visits there.
The past several years in HK have been slowly crushing my soul & now that I've a better understanding of my rights & the sociopolitical circumstances I face, it's absolutely devastating to see this happening to my birth city. #HongKongProtest #freehongkong #onecountrytwosystems
