Friday Family Fun

One of the most devalued tools of tarbiya is the spiritual harnessing of family fun.

Children, in their relationships with others, are deeply affected by non-rational influences... Image
This makes them both vulnerable and impressionable, in heightened sensitivity to their caregivers, who have only to exert the most positive emotions they can conjure to create a loving, lasting bond, stiched in time with the thread of beautiful memories. Image
The main objective of social media is to use, even manipulate, the evocative to *influence* the ‘public customer’.

That’s why the *rational* hardly has a place in the digital jungle. Image

🚨 Stop giving smartphones to your kids! 🚨

A friend shared Sapien Labs' report that highlights a deeply concerning correlation between early access to smartphones (& tablets) to young children and the increased likelihood of suffering from mental disorders as adults. (1/5) Image
The numbers are truly shocking:

(a) ~60-70% of women who were exposed to smartphones before the age of 10 experience mental health issues as adults

(b) ~45-50% of men who got exposed to smartphones before the age of 10 also face similar challenges later in life. (2/5)
I urge parents to resist the temptation of handing over a phone to kids always - while crying, or eating food etc.

Instead, encourage real-world interactions, outdoor activities & hobbies.

As parents, we have a responsibility to protect our children's mental health. (3/5)

For Mother's Day here in the United States, I want all you other moms of autistic kids to know that I see you, and that you are not alone.

Thread from:

I see your joys, and I see your sorrows.

I see you when you are having a tough day yet still manage to interact with your child with respect and kindness.

2/
I see you when you keep your voice calm during crises, because you know your autistic child is extra-sensitive to emotions and they need you to help them keep it together, or get it back together. 3/

Few days ago I wrote about a difficult question faced by many parents - how to motivate kids to do long term things in life?

I am writing more details about this here. It is not a complete answer at all. I hope to get you to think and change your behaviour.
Motivation is grossly divided into 2 groups -
1. Push motivation - when you want to get away from your present conditions so you are motivated to undertake steps that will help you get out.
2. Pull motivation - when you are attracted to a great goal and desire to achieve that goal makes you do necessary things.

Why do we think punishing our kids will help them change? All we are doing is punishing kids for skills they don’t (yet) have - instead of teaching them the skills they were missing in the first place.

Let’s walk through this to illustrate the point …
Imagine watching your child in the pool with a swim instructor who yells “Go to your room! Come out when you can swim better!”

We’d never return to that swim teacher. How could a child change with this method?

We want coaches and instructors to teach… not blame and punish.
With swimming and any other skill, we know that change takes time.

Well, here’s an idea: emotion regulation is a learned skill too.

Underneath kids’ “bad behavior” is a lack of emotion regulation SKILLS.

And our job as parents is to be an emotion regulation coach.

Thread: I seldom post about anything personal, but I am incandescent with rage. My 4.5-year-old at school is being bullied and called names for being dusky. #colourism is a serious problem in India- she doesn't want to go to school because she was told she is "dark & scary"
This is not the first time- 6 months ago we brought this to the teacher's attention. This is one of the most expensive, private, Montessori, alternative schools in Pune. We shared a copy of @Lupita_Nyongo's Sulwe and asked the teachers to address this issue.
@Lupita_Nyongo For those who haven't read #Sulwe, it's a beautiful story about colourism in an African nation. Very similar to #India where a darker skinned person is called names. School is no longer a psychological space envrionment for my toddler and from loving school she's refusing to go.

There’s a masculine and feminine way to parent. The goal is to have polarized, integrated parenting. Not emasculated fathers and masculinized mothers. twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
Each parent needs to do both masculine & feminine parenting, when appropriate.

(based on polyvagal theory)

A lot of mothers will get hardened by a de-polarized parenting system & fathers become passive & aloof. Resentment & disrespect will build. Intimacy will erode.
You’re probably wondering:

How do you fix the overbearing wife, passive husband trap?

Here’s a tip👇🏽

One key emotional skill in parenting -
To stop yourself from giving logical explanations when your child is experiencing negative emotions like fear, anger, sadness, disgust, etc.

It comes from parental need to get child out of misery as soon as possible.
#Thread
Out ability to use words with precise meaning and our ability to retrofit logic onto any event gives undesirable outcomes in parenting young kids (and human kids remain young for a loooong time).
When a cub is hurt and runs to mother with that wound, mammalian mother will take the cub close to her (cuddle), inspect the wound, lick the wound (cleaning and dressing) and lick the cub till it is soothed.

Upon being asked by the judge, if he worried about Sushmita’s marriage after adopting a child, her father replied.

"While no father would be okay with that, he was sure he never raised her to only be some worried.

Most people are aware of terrible effects of abusive parenting. Narcissistic and uncaring parents usually top the list of bad parenting models.

In clinical practice i see one more personality quality to be corrosive but almost unknown to people.
This personality characteristic is high level of anxiety in one parent or both.

Parent's anxiety is often disguised as "care". And this is the real root of the problem.
Anxious people in powerful position of a parent can become extremely controlling. Their worldview of 🌎 being a nasty place can percolate into child's worldview.

What other option does the child have?
