I’ve been asked several times if I plan to get my 3yr old and 16mo old vaccinated against COVID.

Guess what? *Every* pediatrician I know with kids under 5 is eager to vaccinate their kids against COVID.

Why is that?

🧵
We've talked with thousands of families about COVID.

We've done our research (like, literally).

We’ve seen the immediate effects of coronavirus infection, including kids who have been hospitalized or worse.

We’ve seen the long-term effects of coronavirus infection -
long COVID with debilitating fatigue, significantly increased risk of autoimmune illnesses like Type 1 diabetes, and more.

So, no, it's not always "mild" for kids.

Excited to hear from @YadiraCaraveo (who was @DrBenHoffman’s resident, now a #tweetiatrician and CO state rep!) #AAP2021
- Kids’ issues not always taken seriously in govt since they don’t vote so it’s OUR job to advocate for policies that #PutKids1st
Thankful for #tweetiatricians in office @DrPanMD @RepKimSchrier plus ppl like @suwumd @NancyGraffMD @kcalvinaap @AmerAcadPeds #AAPLegCon staff (and many others not on Twitter) who organize legislative visits on multiple levels!
#Advocacy tips
- many important decisions made at state/local levels
- maybe better to contact legislators when NOT in session to establish relationships
- join AAP lists for alerts on various issues/bills
- consider running for office eg @docsinpolitics @runforsomething

#MedTwitter has been discussing “Take Two Aspirin + Call Me By My Pronouns,” an op-ed claiming social justice is taking time from sci ed + decreasing the quality of #MedEd.

So here’s my take:
“Take Two Aspirin + Read a Curriculum”
THREAD.

#MedTwitter #SoMeDocs #DoubleDocs
As always, I start threads with my POV: #LatinasInMedicine #DoubleDocs student in year 2 of #medschool. I have interests in both #MedEd + #HealthJustice. I am about to finish my term as diversity rep on our med student govt. I care a lot about advocacy.
Let’s take a moment to learn about the author: Stanley Goldfarb is a nephrologist, *former* assoc dean of curriculum at UPenn Med. He graduated from med school in 1969. Ffolks who studied at UPenn have brought up negative experiences with Dr. Goldfarb.

I have a confession... as a child, I once shoplifted.

A Thread.

I was maybe 6 or 7 years old. My (white) maternal grandparents were visiting & I went with them, my Mom & younger siblings to a Christian book store.

At the time I was really into Colby’s Clubhouse. A show about a robot that hung out w/kids & taught them lessons from the Bible Image
In the store was a Colby wristwatch! I wanted it, bad. Even now I recall how much I wanted that watch. My Mom refused.

So I snuck away & put the box under my winter coat. I remember the walk to the car being difficult as I was afraid it would fall out.

Let’s talk #VaccineLiability. There’s a vaccine court that has a lower evidentiary bar than any civil court in the US. If a plaintiff fails there, he can STILL sue in civil court afterward. Our system does protect families. #VaccinesSaveLives
Let’s talk #VAERS. It’s an important database in which anyone can voluntarily report any effect of a vaccine: injection site soreness, fever, fussiness, redness. I’ve reported. So when #ProPlague #Antivaxxers quote numbers, just ask for the breakdown of VAERs reports.#VaccinesWork
The #VAERS system helps monitor concerning symptoms that could start to appear (eg, ⬆️’d soreness or fever with a specific batch of vaccines). It helped identify concerns w/rotavirus so it could undergo rigorous safety testing. It’s a great 1st step in safety.#VaccineMonitoring
