Deeply ashamed of @OrielOxford's decision to retain the statue of #CecilRhodes due to "regulatory and financial challenges".

Instead they will "contextualise" the statue. Let me suggest some facts that should be included in that context. 🧵 (1/x)

theguardian.com/education/2021…
The students of @OrielOxford voted by 125-26 in June 2020 to remove the statue of Cecil Rhodes.

The Governing Body of staff agreed with this wish and voted to establish a committee to consult stakeholders and recommendations.

So why did the college reject these views? [2/x]
First, the college has a dodgy history. Not only did it receive a huge donation from colonial tyrant #CecilRhodes and erect a monument in his honour in 1911 (he is in a suit - this is recent!!)...

... but the college was the last to admit women in 1985. [3/x]

Two days ago, I was in an interview in which I surprised the interviewers by saying that Kenyans don't have the same political consciousness as Africans in the other settler ex-colonies of South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Thread.
For instance, South African students campaigned for #feesmustfall and #rhodesmustfall. In SA, students said "our parents fought against apartheid because they wanted us to go to school. So now we want to go to school, whether we have money or not."
Here? Students are ask about skills because that's what employers want. Or ask for leadership. They don't question why they must get into debt to learn. They instead ask for effecient disbursement and merciful repayment terms. Students don't know what is in their own interests.

Establishment Psychopathy: a selection of evidence setting out some of the ways in which colonial violence & structural racism continue to privilege our “ruling class”... [thread of threads] 🧐✊🌹🇪🇺 #ColonialViolence #BritishEmpire #ReparationsNow #BlackLivesMatter Image
The magnificent #BlackLivesMatter protests are proof of structural racism around the world... This thread ⬇️ shows how the UK Establishment still benefits from slave money, and why it will ALWAYS resist a proper discussion of #history. 😖✊🌹🇪🇺 #Colston #Slavery #RhodesMustFall
Colonial wrongdoing was often rewarded with wealth and a peerage… Our ludicrous system means that this chap #Trenchard ⬇️ gets to make our laws in part because his grandfather liked to burn villages in #Nigeria. 😧✊🌹🇪🇺🇳🇬 #SystemChange #ToriesOut #COVID19

Defender estátuas de colonizadores, escravocratas ou governantes autoritários é uma atitude que está em queda (com o perdão do trocadilho). O assunto é polêmico pois são os usos públicos do passado que estão em debate. Pra conhecer a história dessa questão, acompanha a thread 🧵

To all those saying that slavery happened a long time ago, that it didn't benefit them directly, and that they not racists so why should they care - THIS is why you should care. #thread #slavery #blacklivesmatter #ukprotests #bristolstatue #RhodesMustFall 1/4
You may think that you don't personally benefit from slavery, but you almost certainly do. Many of you may be surprised to find your ancestors + people with your name in this database - like Thomas J. Cheeseman a British slave over. Check it out here: 2/4 ucl.ac.uk/lbs/project/de…
Even if you don't find your own name in the database, you live in a county whose infrastructure and economy benefitted massively from slavery and other immoral acts, and those benefits created advantages - in education, business, healthcare - enjoyed by subsequent generations 3/4

I’ve thought for a while about writing this. It’s difficult as I am a loyal lecturer @UniofOxford . But as I watch the #RhodesMustFall protests I want to share an experience. First off, this is not about race but it is about class, gender, xenophobia & otherness.
Secondly, I love Oxford University. It’s not a single entity. It’s a body with lots of parts. When I arrived fresh from state school in Slough I hid from the unpleasant bits while places like @StAnnesCollege @KelloggOx @OxfordConted @EFLOxford supported & embraced me.
I fought on the Target Schools campaign to encourage more state school kids to apply & loved the fresh learning space of St Anne’s. Throughout my 3 year degree I was in a band travelling in & out of London. One night I came back from a gig & a friend said ‘come to Oriel College.’

This evening I submitted my first ever planning application to Bristol City Council. It was a listed building consent application for retrospective application for the removal of the Grade 2-listed statue of Edward Colston. THREAD
It's a common misconception that you need to own the land you are applying for planning permission on. You don't. You just have to serve notice to the owners. In this case, it's Bristol City Council. I couldn't find an obvious generic email address so I sent it to complaints.
Bristol City Council requires you to fill in a form, and also provide three documents: a Design and Access Statement, a Location Plan and a Site Plan. The latter two you can imagine. Here's the D&AS I submitted. They just need to know you have considered design principles.

Still processing the powerful discussion we had today in our #MA @ARUSociology session on #DecolonisingtheUniversity. A student shared her experiences of growing up in apartheid South Africa & feeling validated & 'seen' by the reading material. Became emotional as she talked
about how #apartheid affected her secondary & higher education in South Africa. Another shared his experiences of racism & racial abuse at his place of work in London, and how he'd envisioned a different kind of life in the UK when he migrated from Nigeria three years
ago. A third talked about being British in Zimbabwe and how her family had tried to convince her that the 'whites' were there to help the 'black people' and how she learnt to resist the 'civilising' narrative of #empire. A fourth discussed how her godfather rolled his eyes at her

#Decolonising #Development must be approached against a dual background of (a) optimistic anticolonial pushbacks like #RhodesMustFall & (b) renewed, frantic & violent attempts to hold on to the 'white man's world' - @o_rutazibwa opens the last #SussexDev lecture of 2017 @IDS_UK
@o_rutazibwa @IDS_UK The 'bathwater' here is #development as a system (ideologies, institutions, practices) which we may need to get rid of; we need to fight the desire to hold on to 'development studies' even if it has given us our professional identities (and paychecks) @o_rutazibwa #SussexDev
@o_rutazibwa @IDS_UK The 'baby' in this story is the ideas, desires and energy - global #justice, #solidarity, #reparations - righting the past and present wrongs that persist 'after' colonialism (the end of which was never quite the rupture we sometimes imagine) - @o_rutazibwa #SussexDev
