Thread: At #Jeffco board meeting, Director Miller’s questions get to the truth about the current state of the scandal ridden $800m bond program…@wsj @The74 #copolitics #edcolo #k12 #edpolicy #edchat
(1) After net $19m in costs at schools receiving students from 16 closed ES, only $34m (!) is left from $118m in bond premium ($51m was spent on athletic facilities not disclosed to voters in 2018)…
(2) About $100m from original bond proceeds is currently allocated to projects that haven’t begun, including construction of 2 new ES (!!!). This includes $17m for projects now in design phase, and $83m that haven’t begun.

HAPPENING NOW: @RoundRockISD's BoT student outcomes workshop. Watch live here: roundrockisd.org/about-rrisd/bo…
#rrisd1family
Coach Marsha is a badass at managing the room. Kudos to her bc it ain't an easy one... And in an an ultimate pot-meet-kettle moment, Danielle just lectured President Weir about using "rhetoric" for saying the goals should support % growth without breaking individual students.
Reading Academies is only required by state for K-3 and #RRISD is (thankfully) implementing it for K-5. Not all schools have been through the training yet. Amy suggests adding 10% points for groups that need most focus. @ryansmithblog will update goals based on new assumption.

2/We know there’s a #DeafEd #TeacherShortage...but what do we DO?? #scicomm

My research comprehensively looked at all teachers of the deaf/hard of hearing (TODHH) in one state. Where do they work? Where were they trained? What are their challenges?
3/ What are THEIR ideas for addressing the #DeafEd #TeacherShortage (hmm...asking teachers their opinions on education issues. Novel concept🧐)

After the #txlege refused to reform how Texas funds special education in 2019, a panel they created to consider a funding system based on student need instead of instructional arrangement are recommending full reform of the current system. #txed #SpEd
reformaustin.org/education/chan…
Panel co-chairs Steven Aleman (@DisRightsTx) & Kristin McGuire (@txcase) gave us this joint statement: “The members of the committee hope that each state lawmaker takes a careful look at the report and speaks to his or her constituents on the recommendations." #txed #txlege 1/
"It’s even more important in this time of uncertainty that focus be given to how this state prioritizes the education of students w/disabilities. This includes financial resources & the way in which these resources are distributed throughout the state." #txed #txlege 2/

Watching the @RoundRockISD BoT meeting: roundrockisd.org/about-rrisd/li…

US: "22 million people have filed unemployment in 4 weeks."
@roundrockisd: "If we don't raise property taxes now we will fall behind other districts who do."
Me: 🙄 "Let them eat cake."
#rrisd1family
.@vessacory: "I'm concerned abt assumption that enrollment will increase by 500. My concern is that #COVID will cause students to leave"

✋My son is worth $25K in revenue in #SPED to @roundrockisd w/ basic allotment & if he doesn't get synchronous learning soon, I'm leaving.
.@sfloresRRISD: we're in daily contact & that's a discussion as we talked about earlier something about online learning, things are great. If we lost 500 students I'll come to the board & something about companies, please give us money, blah blah. Nonetheless, everything's great.

1/7 Since @roundrockisd started it's 2016 @roundrockcurriculum project, & #rrisdtech's push 4 widespread use of Google Classroom/Chromebooks in elementary schools, & @HoldsworthCentr leadership training began consuming significant amts of #rrisd1family teachers' PD time...
2/7 No improvements 2 literacy/numeracy in @roundrock is indicated & declined for vulnerable student populations (including #SPED). Yet @roundrockisd still uses skills focused read'g strategies, while schls w/ better resources & lower teacher turnover deliver target'd support.
3/7 There are other valid issues/concerns/perspectives that members of @roundrockisd see and experience daily. #eduequity is a constant project that requires dedicated effort and HONEST self-reflection. The work is hard, but so WORTH IT!

We have a new study forthcoming in Exceptional Children. We examine whether students of color are more or less likely to be identified as having #disabilities in U.S. states with histories of de jure and de facto racial #segregation. (1)
Special education has been theorized to have been used as an alternative legal strategy for schools to avoid racial integration. This prior work was historical and descriptive. Others have suggested that over-identification might be especially likely to occur in the South. (2)
Yet other work suggests that students of color may be under-identified as having disabilities in the U.S. South, incl. due to political and economic factors. Mechanisms hypothesized to result in under-identification nationally may also be operating similarly in the South. (3)

Hi #pediatricians, our work on #disparities in #disability id. was just cited by the @AmerAcadPeds in their #policy statement on the impact of #racism on children's health. Our most recent study was cited. If helpful, here is a thread of our work to date. #RacismAndHealth (1)
@AmerAcadPeds Here is the abstract and link the the study cited in the @AmerAcadPeds policy statement. journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.310…. We find that children of color are less likely to be identified as having disabilities than similarly situated students who are White in U.S. schools (2)
@AmerAcadPeds Here is an example finding. Of U.S. 4th grade students displaying clinically significant reading difficulties, 74% of White students are receiving special education. The contrasting percentages for Black, Hispanic, and American Indian students? 44%, 43%, and 48%, respectively (3)

Unanimous support @BOSCityCouncil for @AnnissaForBos Resolution in support of @RepDanRyan amendment #1 to H.4730 the foundation budget bill. Of course, we must continue to revisit how #BPS dedicates & allocates its dollars but the fact remains,
We need more revenue & should not be forced to choose between a #BPS #school #nurse a #librarian or #paraprofessional for a #SPED classroom, or continue to underfund #MadisonPark H.S. These are unenviable & unfair choices.
We need an alignment of #BPS vision, priorities & financial investment AND we need more revenue. TY @AnnissaForBos @RepDanRyan @marty_walsh
