WHAT TO DO ABOUT SMALL BOATS?!

Excellent news for people worried about the numbers of asylum-seekers crossing the Channel in small boats - it could be STOPPED!

Great campaign by @Care4Calais
1/
The Tories often posit they are trying to stop traffickers, but closing the legal routes HAS NOT WORKED. Instead, it has made it harder and more dangerous for refugees to seek shelter from unsafe places.
2/
"Evidence on parliaments’ website shows that 76-86% of those who cross the Channel on small boats are subsequently granted refugee status" - so we readily acknowledge MOST of the people who cross, are 'legit'

Today's tragedy in the English Channel raises serious questions about what can be done to prevent more similar deaths. We need to understand what happened, and why: a 🧵
Sometime before 3am this morning, somewhere out on the black, freezing-cold waters of the English Channel, a light dinghy carrying around 50 men, women and children began to sink. Losing air, one side had buckled and, with water coming in, the soft base was sinking into the sea.
People were screaming for help. It is possible that some had already fallen into the sea.

At around 3am, people on the boat saw the lights of a fishing boat approach them and pull alongside. From above, the crew threw down ropes and, one by one, hauled them to safety.

#NationalityAndBordersBill

Tomorrow & Wednesday will be last two days for MPs to scrutinise & vote on this Bill. To how much of following can they possibly give proper scrutiny, let alone meaningfully vote upon given Government will ‘whip’ to require its majority wins out? 1/15
Clause 9 will empower Home Secretary to strip British citizens of their citizenship in secret.

Stripping people of their citizenship is already a draconian power. Seeking power to do so secretly shows contempt for British citizenship & the rights of every British person. 2/15
Clause 10 will empower Home Sec to refuse to register right of a stateless child, born in UK & lived here at least five years, to British citizenship.

Leaving kids born & growing up here without British citizenship & stateless shows contempt for children & their rights. 3/15

🔴Four shipwrecks in one week off Libya.

Between 13-20.08, ~900 people on 14 boats called our Alarm Phone. ~100 were returned to Libya, ~540 reached Europe. 100+ people died or went missing. The fate of a further 160 people remains unknown.

Our report: alarmphone.org/en/2020/08/23/…
The first shipwreck (16-17.08), was not just a shipwreck. People were shot at by a group of 5 men, and their boat caught fire. 45 people were killed. Those who did survive are alive only because a local fisherman rescued them. We collected some of of the survivors' voices:
The second shipwreck took place on 18.08. Of the ~95 people on board, just 65 survived. Whilst we were on the phone with the people, a tube burst. After this sound came only silence as we failed to reconnect with the boat. We raised the alarm with all authorities, to no avail.

++ AlarmPhone alerted to 4 boats off Morocco! ++
Yesterday, 1 small paddle boat with 12 people on board was intercepted to #Morocco. 3 other boats with 63, 32 and 28 people left from the Western Sahara on Saturday, heading toward #CanaryIslands. They still are out at sea!
Spanish air assets are searching for the boats but bad weather makes this a difficult task. The boats face high waves in the waters of the Atlantic. This morning & last night @salvamentogob rescued 2 other boats with 31 & 26 people. We ask for #safepassage for all!
We are still unable to confirm the fate of the 3 boats we were alerted to in the Western Med. @salvamentogob confirmed to us that they rescued a boat with 33 people last night but unfortunately we were unable to confirm this is one of the boats that reached out to us.

At 19.44 we were called by a boat in distress with 85 people escaping from #Libya. They almost reached the #Malta SAR zone, but we lost contact & we don’t know what happened to them. We alerted all authorities but @Armed_Forces_MT are refusing to intervene. Rescue is urgent! Image
We were told that the 85 people who called #AlarmPhone in distress last Tuesday were returned to the Libyan hell. They were nearly in the #Malta SAR zone, but European Coastguards only sent surveillance planes instead of rescue vessels.
According to a testimony, the 85 people have been “sold like slaves” upon arrival back in #Libya. This has to stop. Libya is not a Port of Safety. Europe has to end its cooperations with Libya now and create #safepassage for everyone!

Our Central #Mediterranean Regional Analysis is out!

It covers the period 1 Oct to 31 Dec 2019 & discusses key developments in this region of the #Med.

In 2019, we were alerted to 101 boats escaping #Libya or #Tunisia, carrying over 6,200 people.

alarmphone.org/en/2020/01/05/…
Our analysis of the central #Med highlights some of the following:

🔸#CivilFleet & #AlarmPhone rescues
🔸Non-assistance & interceptions by #Europe & allies
🔸“Privatised” push-backs to #Libya
🔸Recent shipwrecks & the invisibilised deaths at sea
🔸Messages from Libyan #detention
Despite all atrocities we witnessed in the central #Med, people did not stop struggling for #FreedomOfMovement & #safepassage. Many boats reached #Europe autonomously, NGO vessels returned to sea & rescued hundreds of people & migrants resisted their illegal push-back to #Libya.

Our 8-week report is out! It covers the period 28 Oct. to 22 Dec. 2019. We engaged in 95 distress cases in the #Mediterranean, involving around 3,184 migrant travellers, of whom about 1,869 reached #Europe. Over 300 people lost their lives or went missing. alarmphone.org/en/2020/01/01/…
#Aegean Sea: 60 distress cases, involving over 1,347 individuals. 38 boats with over 834 individuals on board reached #Greece. 22 boats with over 513 individuals were returned to #Turkey. We fear that at least 5 cases involved illegal push/pull back practices.
Central #Med: 19 distress cases, involving about 1,269 people. 13 boats with 786 people on board were rescued to #Europe, 9 of them by the civil fleet. 3 boats with about 219 people were returned to #Libya. 3 boats with 264 people on board capsized or went missing.

This morning we were alerted by a boat in distress in the Maltese SAR zone, with 94 people on board. We immediately tried to alert the responsible authority in #Malta, but they are not answering. RCCs must comply with their international obligations & not delay rescue operations! Image
RCC #Malta informed us that they took responsibility for this #SAR event and that a rescue vessel is on its way! We hope that the 94 people on board, who are fleeing from the Libyan hell, will be rescued soon. Updates will follow. #FreedomOfMovement, #SafePassage
RCC #Malta informed us that all the people on board (97) are now safe on a rescue vessel & on their way to disembark in Malta. We are glad that they managed to escape the Libyan hell & to survive this dangerous journey. They should not have to risk their lives to reach #Europe.

#safepassage #portiaperti

+++ About 90 people fleeing #Libya in grave danger! +++

This afternoon, we were alerted by a boat in distress, including 13 women and several children. Authorities and #OpenArms are informed. The people need to be rescued immediately, they say a tube is deflating! #safepassage
The last contact we had with the approximately 90 people in distress was at 18.36h CET. Since then, we have not been able to re-connect. Where and how are they? Are they still alive? Are #European coastguards searching for them or are they left to die? We do not know.
We have alerted the authorities in #Italy & #Malta to this case of distress, yet they refuse to take responsibility. We lost contact to the boat 15h ago. We do not know if they are still alive. As #European authorities fail to assist, we hope that the civil fleet will find them.

Trial today began with video of the interrogation of the two men arrested with Dr. Warren, Jose and Kristian, detained until they testified, then deported. We acknowledge that these stories are not ours to tell, but we also don’t want their experiences to be erased.
Jose and Kristian are from Honduras and El Salvador, respectively. Like so many people who attempt this journey, they had traveled for months by the time they scaled the wall and entered the Arizona desert. #noalmuro #noborderwall
They described dropping their food and water after seeing @CBP in the desert near Ajo, but continued on through the cold, without any supplies. Jose explained how he navigated north - “Q: you know how to guide yourself by the starlight? A: By the stars, yes.”

At 19:49 a boat in distress in Maltese #SAR called us. They said there are 45 people on board, incl. 5 women & 1 child. They left Zuwahra, #Libya, last night. Their engine is not working & they urgently ask for help. We informed authorities in #Italy & #Malta and @openarms_found. Image
@openarms_found None of the informed authorities confirmed they are taking responsibility for rescuing the boat in distress. Once again, we are witnessing non-assistance & delay in #Malta SAR zone. Every moment at sea can be fatal on an overcrowded wooden boat! #safepassage
@openarms_found We are relieved that @openarms_fund rescued the boat in distress, whilst #Malta and #Italy stood by, in a blatant act of non-assistance. What would have happened if #OpenArms had not been at sea? How many lives would have been lost only this year, without the civil rescue fleet?

Another boat with 45 people in distress! When we received their GPS position we informed authorities at 18:35 CEST. We demand the immediate launch of a rescue operation by #Malta. Do not endanger lives! The rescued must be brought to a place of safety - and that's in #Europe. Image
It took almost 2,5h to reach #Malta! The people on board are desperate, they demand help as fuel is low, water is entering and it's dark at sea. "Many people are sick, we are afraid also about the women and children".
Don't let them drown!
The people are still at sea,! We are in constant contact, last time at 7:52 CEST. We called MRCC Rome and RCC Malta several times with update of position and the situation on board. #Malta & #Italy do not respond to our alerts. #Europe, take responsibility! Image

We just alerted @Armed_Forces_MT about a boat in distress in their #SAR zone. On board 50 ppl - reportedly includ. 10 women & 5 children.
We urge the authorities in #Malta to send a vessel quickly & not delay SAR operations again like at the beginning of this week.

#safepassage Image
We repeatedly called @Armed_Forces_MT between 15.55 and 17.25 CEST to communicate the new GPS positions of the boat in distress & to ask whether they are taking responsibility for the case but they are again not reachable. We urgently ask the authorities in #Malta to take action!
@Armed_Forces_MT The #migrants have been at sea for 17 hours & they are urgently asking for help. Our last contact with them was at 17.00 CEST, when they said: „The boat is leaking.” It’s getting dark in the #Med and we still do not know if #Malta is organising a rescue. Don’t let them drown!

Safe Passage (a thread)

In 2017 a decommissioned Irish Navy ship, the LE Aisling, was sold by public auction to a private buyer. One year later it was re-sold, at over six times the price for which it was bought, to the Libyan Navy, and re-named Al Karama (which means Dignity).
The head of the Libyan Navy was recently implicated in the bombing of a detention centre which killed 44 refugees and people seeking safety and dignity. The Libyan Coast Guard, which receives EU funding & military training, has perpetuated ongoing human rights violations at sea.
Refugees and migrants- women, men and children- are subjected to systematic, extreme abuse in Libyan detention centers.Torture, gender-based sexual violence, extortion and slavery are regularly documented realities of those who flee Libya by sea.

#safepassage Image
Circa 80 vite in pericolo e nessun intervento!
A bordo c'erano 90 persone in totale.
