"The 21st Century Question: Emergently Engineering the Future"

Follow this šŸ§µ today and tomorrow for highlights from our 2022 #AppliedComplexity Network and Board of Trustees Symposium:

#Web3 #Cities #Polarization #EmergentEngineering #Decentralization
We start with a talk by SFI President David Krakauer:

"Would anyone care to guess why we're so GOOD at building transistors and so CRAP at designing drugs?"

"This thing [points to transistor] lives in a centralized system. This thing [points to cancer drug] lives in US."
"I'm going to pick on economics, because we like to do that at SFI. 'Ooh, look at that cover! So techy. Global, heat maps...' But here's 'Networks' [in the textbook]. THAT'S IT. Here's '#ComplexityEconomics.' NOTHING."

In the first six months of 2021, India saw 348.7 million VPN installations, a year on year growth of 671%.

But does India face the threat of a VPN ban today? The Standing Committee on Home Affairs certainly wants them blocked. #SaveTheInternet 1/n
internetfreedom.in/hands-off-our-ā€¦
VPNs are important because they:

šŸ’» help secure user data (against commercial fraud)

šŸ’» help journalists, activists & whistleblowers secure confidential information

šŸ’» allow users to sidestep arbitrary website blockings (i.e. help in creating #netneutrality) 2/n
Under the guise of "women's safety", the Standing Committee on Home Affairs wants to ā€˜strengthen tracking and surveillance mechanismsā€™!

VPNs work by encrypting data traffic, which prevents your ISP from tracking your location or data. Keeping VPN services legal is essential. 3/n

Alarming news! A recent report states that the DOT has cited "fiscal constraints" in establishing a Multi Stakeholder Body (MSB) that would ensure India's hard won net neutrality protections for all. #SaveTheInternet

Here's why you should care šŸ‘‡šŸ½ 1/n
internetfreedom.in/is-the-dot-doiā€¦
In Sept '20, the @TRAI had forwarded key strategies around enforcing net neutrality principles to the @DoT_India. Now, the DoT has apparently stated financial constraints around COVID-19 as an excuse to not follow up on them!

We filed an RTI with the DoT to confirm this. 2/n
We asked them:

a. What actions were initiated by the DoT with regards to TRAI recommendations (Sept '20)

b. If an MSB was constituted to support net neutrality

c. Impact of budget constraints on the potential to act on recommendations.

We are yet to receive an answer. 3/n

Remember #SaveTheInternet ? One of the core issues we dealt with beyond Net Neutrality, was the issue of licensing of online services. @TRAI finally made some excellent recommendations on it recently! 1/n internetfreedom.in/thank-you-traiā€¦
@TRAI These recommendations push back against demands by telecom companies to:
1. Impose licensing on OTT Providers for revenue sharing
2. Creation of a super regulator to oversee all OTT services which would operate without any clear mandate
3. Break end-to-end encryption

2/n
@TRAI The TRAI has snubbed these demands, with clear categorical recommendations to the Department of Telecom which we support. We have written to them today, asking them to consider them positively and if any changes are made acting upon them to be done in a transparent manner. 3/n

Hey folks. Last week, IFF submitted a response to the Ministry of Corporate Affairsā€™ public consultation on a draft Competition Amendment Bill which will update Indian competition laws. Read more about IFFā€™s submission here.
(1/10)
internetfreedom.in/read-iffs-respā€¦
While we applaud some of the MCAā€™s proposed amendments our submission provides institutional recommendations to improve CCI capacity, maintain CCI independence, improve CCI coordination and ensure specialisation in appellate matters.
(2/10)
We opposed the proposal to provide an exception for IP holders in abuse of dominance cases. This may be misused as a common defence tactic and could be problematic in cases relating to essential facilities.

āœ‰ļø Email your comments to TRAI.
šŸ‘‚Help IFF develop a position and give us feedback.

The telecom sector is going through a high amount of stress and even likely reduction in the number of ISPs. With reduced competition net neutrality protections are more important than ever before in India. So, read, educate and participate! #SaveTheInternet

One year ago today, Trumpā€™s FCC repealed #NetNeutrality, stripping away protections for consumers and putting Big Cable in the driverā€™s seat. @senatemajldr has the opportunity to restore internet freedom for every American by passing the #SaveTheInternet Act.
@senatemajldr Republicans want American consumers to believe that the sky isnā€™t falling by repealing #NetNeutrality. Hereā€™s the reality: these changes hurting consumers wonā€™t come all at once. Big Cable is making them in steady, creeping ways hoping they go unnoticed. #SaveTheInternet
In 2006 I introduced the first bill in the Senate to protect #NetNeutrality, because I believe that once youā€™ve paid your internet access fee, you should get to go where you want, when you want, and how you want on the internet. #SaveTheInternet

Today a 21-pages document was sent to at least 22 members of the European parliament. The authors claim to ā€žhave clear evidence of US meddling in this EU law making processā€œ and that a full release will happen in the next days.

They are wrong and here is why. /1
Good: They are transparent about how they came to their conclusion and what tools they used. Else this thread would have ended like the last one.

The false core claim: 23%-47% of mentions of anti copyright directive campaign hashtag mentions came from the US. /2
Biggest mistake: They presented location data by @Talkwalker without questioning it.

The used the full version, but the free version is enough to prove my point that the location data is not trustworthy.

Let's look at #SaveYourInternet as an example. 63k mentions in 7 days. /3

Thread:

I'm told that Telecom Commission has accepted @TRAI 's recommendations on #NetNeutrality. Thank you TRAI& @rssharma3 for giving India the strongest Net Neutrality regulations in the world, covering both throttling of Internet access & prevention of discriminatory pricing
As per the @trai recommendations, ISP and Telco license conditions will be amended to enforce net neutrality principles. This means that if the telecom operators violate net neutrality, then they will be violating their license conditions, risking license cancellation
Apart from a #NetNeutrality law, this was the most effective way of ensuring non-discrimination by ISPs in India. My story on India's Net Neutrality rules here: medianama.com/2017/11/223-trā€¦

We can #SaveTheInternet if the House will take a vote like the Senate. ISPs should not have the last word in what any American can see on the internet. Congress has a chance to put consumers and #SmallBiz first. #NetNeutrality
Seventy percent of small business owners feel that they are at a disadvantage compared to larger businesses due to their size and market power. The internet gives them capacity to try to equalize that disadvantage. Congress should support a free and open internet.
This is a debate of whether we are on the side of big utility-type companies or individuals and small businesses to guarantee them equal access to this critical service. Almost half of consumers have no choice of ISP. This is not about competition but preventing discrimination.

Inaction by House Republicans on the bipartisan Senate resolution to #SaveTheInternet has allowed the FCC to repeal #NetNeutrality today.
They have decided to side with giant internet service companies and special interests instead the millions of Americans who want to keep the internet open and free.
Iā€™m urging @SpeakerRyan to side with millions of Americans, and not the big internet service providers, by bringing the #SaveTheInternet resolution to the House floor for a vote.

#NetNeutrality is the lifeblood of the internetā€”it allows for allows for equal opportunity and democracy without the threat of blocking, discriminating, price gouging, or favoritism.
Reversing #NetNeutrality would be a nightmare for consumers. But it would also be a death knell for competition, innovation, and creativity in America.
Today the Senate stood with millions of Americans by taking action to #SaveTheInternet and protect #NetNeutrality. #NetNeutrality isnā€™t a partisan issue in the hallways of Congress or communities across America.

Now that the lawyers have run their marathon and we wait for the top court to rule, a small personal diary note thread on #Aadhaar & me.

Huge thanks to community of people who have widened my wisdom of how society works. Fellow helpless people helping each other.
It started sometime in 2011, when I knew nothing, enrolled along with family. But our enrollment packets were lost, EID wasnt even searchable. I did write some emails to support, but yielded nothing more than, please enroll again. As the need wasn't real, did not enroll.
Parents gave up at a later date, enrolled, got UID successfully generated. I resisted, mostly because of laziness, but did not have developed trust enough to enroll. On random browsing sessions, have heard Usha Ramanathan on YouTube, but never took deep dive into issues.
