1. WSJ: With US funding, Ben Hu with the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) was studying how coronaviruses infect humans and became ill in November 2019 with symptoms that American officials said were consistent with either Covid-19 or a seasonal illness. wsj.com/articles/u-s-f…
2. @WhiteCoatWaste got the NIAID grant with Ben Hu's name on it. This is the NIH institute that Tony Fauci ran. Ya' know, the guy who said he didn't fund this research?

Document shows Ben Hu is a subcontractor to Peter Daszak's EcoHealth Alliance.

Hu also reports a USAID grant. Image
3. The Journal notes that they reported back in 2021 that these three WIV researchers had fallen sick. Those names remained classified until now: Ben Hu, Yu Ping, and Yan Zhu.

So this has been known in classified documents ... for years! Image

This is a brief post about nongeometric backgrounds in string theory. We will define these terms precisely in the following but naively, these can be thought of as "spaces" on which a string moves that don't have a "geometric" interpretation. 1/n
#Physics #scicomm Image
A basic understanding of field theory is required. I'll try to make it as accessible as I can (without distorting the results).
In QFT, the word "background" usually means a set of fields that are present in the theory but whose dynamics aren't part of the theory. 2/n
For example, we can talk about a fermion (described by the Dirac lagrangian), moving in a background electromagnetic field (I'll call it EM field from now). We can also add interactions of this fermion with this background field. 3/n

🚀 5 years ago, I stumbled—somewhat unexpectedly—into the world of tech translation, commercialization & startups. It's been a wild & enriching adventure!

👨🏾‍🔬 As a scientist-turned-entrepreneur, this journey opened my eyes to the business world.

But...
😡 Amidst all the positive learning & growth, there's one thing that truly gets under my skin: misleading marketing & unsubstantiated claims.
😬 Brace yourself: The wearable & assistive tech industry (think #exoskeletons, #prosthetics, sensors) is still plagued by this problem! Whether it's in clinical, occupational, sport, or recreational applications, we need to address it head-on.

The #ICA23-PostCon about #SciCom was great. One random stranger took this picture of our happy group, but she is not the only person to thank. (1/9) A group of people in front ...
The fine people @UofT’s John M. Kelly Library were great (spontaneous!) hosts for our group. When we had to quickly find a room, they willingly opened the door to us (with @JohnBesley paving the way). (2/9)
Organizing this post-conference was a group effort with @msc_lab’s staff: @Malarija, @pgiuliav, @JL_Egelhofer, and yours truly – thus putting @VolkswagenSt’s efforts in supporting #scicomm to good work. (3/9)

Thesis Writing 101

I have edited 100,000+ words and tens of theses in science and history (more than I can keep track of!) over the last ten years.

Here are 17 insights from my experience that can help you improve the quality of your #AcademicWriting 🧵
1. Read aloud: Reading aloud helps to catch errors that were overlooked during silent reading. Find the 'Read Aloud' feature on MS Word under 'Review.'

2. Bring coherency: Make sure that each paragraph flows logically so that the overall #thesis structure is well-organized.
3. Improve formatting: Format your #thesis according to your university's guidelines. Adjust the font type, size, header, and footer.

4. Use citation management tools: Using these tools (Mendeley, EndNote, etc.) can help you save time & avoid errors in writing your bibliography.

🙋‍♀️Fellow @cochranecollab fans and evidence synthesis nerds - I've just found a connection that I am totally vibing on... history, supportive women, symbolism... Cochrane's logo is basically a shoutout to #WomeninSTEM 🤯 Let's dig in...
@cochranecollab has been around for 30 years. It's logo is very symbolic of the impact that #SystematicReviews can have on #healthcare
That original review was led by Patricia Crowley. She wrote the first unstructured review in 1980. It was Anne Anderson who encouraged her to use it as a basis for an early meta-analysis.

1. Instead of reporting, #scicomm writers like @sciencecohen were narrative enforcers for Tony Fauci and other virologists. I'm sure Cohen is hopping mad, but @AshleyRindsberg just went through the emails.
tabletmag.com/sections/news/…
2. After reading this, a source told me @sciencecohen is like a hockey goon, who skates onto the ice and immediately starts throwing punches.

Nothing elegant about this guy

As I explained last summer, Cohen and Fauci protect and promote each other.
3. Since @ScienceMagazine Jon Cohen's emails were made public, he has given conflicting reasons for why he dimed out a whistleblower to his apparent friend Kristian Andersen.

1. WSJ's report on Department of Energy conclusion that lab accident started the pandemic, created a lot of Twitter threads that left out critical information. wsj.com/articles/covid…

First, this is really a second set of DOE scientists, from a different lab than in the past.
2. In June 2021, WSJ reported that DOE Lawrence Livermore's "Z Division" pointed to a lab accident, see foto wsj.com/articles/u-s-r…

I'm told yesterday's news was based on a report from another DOE lab: Los Alamos, which researches pandemic preparedness discover.lanl.gov/news/0705-blac…
3. You could argue this is a second DOE assessment, because it involves different scientists at a different lab. On top of this, we have the FBI assessment that the pandemic started from a lab accident.

Again, you could call this "three separate assessments."

1. EXCLUSIVE: Not hard to fathom why insiders are going to the WSJ reporters w/ fresh intel. Science writers at the NY Times, WashPost, Nature & Science have turned themselves into stenographers for the NIH--#scicomm is not journalism.

We now know FBI has an open investigation.
2. The Energy Department made its judgment with “low confidence”, FBI with “moderate confidence” and this will be ignored by #sccomm ideologues covering the NIH.

More than one million Americans have died in the pandemic that began more than three years ago.
3. "The Covid-19 virus first circulated in Wuhan, China, no later than November 2019, according to the U.S. 2021 intelligence report." (This means some think it was circulating prior, which kicks a hole in Worobey's papers.)

🔬🚀 Are we slowing down on groundbreaking scientific discoveries and technological innovations? 😱 A recent study in @Nature analyzed millions of scientific papers and patents and found that disruptive work has become less common since 1945. 🤔 Why is this happening?
Researchers are calling for a rethink on how we conduct scientific research. 💡 Do you think this slowdown is a cause for concern or just a natural progression? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

1. Gerald Parker, associate dean for Global One Health at Texas A&M, will never see his name in a story by @carlzimmer @JoelAchenbach @sciencecohen or @SmritiMallapaty b/c he uses neutral language that does not promote a #scicomm agenda. theeagle.com/news/where-did…

Some examples:
2. Parker describes "two plausible theories" although "neither proves direct and definitive evidence."

This language violates #scicomm which finds that a lab leak is "speculation" that "lacks direct evidence."

Maybe Parker doesn't have a NY Times subscription?

Here's more:
3. Parker states that we don't know how this virus jumped into humans and began transmission.

This violates #scicomm by ignoring some shabby studies published in Science by Worobey. et. al. that were lapped up by #scicomm writers at Times, Post, Science & Nature.

Yes, #H5N1 has infected humans in the past. But currently, there have not been cases of human to human transmission.

H5N1 is a circulating avian influenza A that has recently infected several mammal populations. It has previously infected over 800 humans in the past two decades.
These infections were avian to human. The previous human infections can be found here: cdc.gov/flu/avianflu/c…
