On my podcast, I read my @Medium column, "Ideas Lying Around," describing a #TheoryOfChange for unrigging markets, addressing the climate emergency, building worker power and saving news publishers from #BigTech:

What is this amazing theory of change, that can do so much to right the world's wrongs? Fittingly, it's the same theory of change that got us into this mess. It's #MiltonFriedman's theory of change.

Washington State enacted a 7% capital gains tax levied on annual profits in excess of $250,000, and made a *fortune*, $600m more than projected in the first year, despite a 25% drop in the stock market and blistering #InterestRate hikes:

Capital gains taxes are levied on "passive income" - money you get for owning stuff. The capital gains rate is *much* lower than the income tax rate - the rate you pay for *doing stuff*.

This mini thread is for my #SocialSecurity nerds who want to know what changed in this year's Trustees' Report. 🧵

Again, Social Security's overall outlook is clear & the TRs tell a consistent story. But there are minor changes each year. Let's look. 1/

Social Security's trustees measure the program's long-term shortfall as a percent of taxable payroll. In the 2023 Trustees' Report, it's -3.42 percent. That's a change of 0.19 percentage points from last year's report. 2/
The report helpfully breaks out what's different.

The biggest change comes from updated methodology. That made Social Security's financing gap 0.06 pp worse, on net, compared to last year's report. But obviously using updated methodology is good! Yay, actuaries! 3/

It’s #SocialSecurity Trustees Report day!

The program’s financial outlook is about the same as last year—the projected reserve depletion date is 2034, 1 year earlier than last year.

Let's have a closer look at what that means and why it matters. 1/ ssa.gov/oact/TR/2023/t…
First of all, a year's worth of fluctuation in the reserve depletion date is not a cause for alarm--or celebration, if it goes the other way!

For over a decade, every Trustees' Report has estimated a reserve depletion date between 2033 and 2035. 2/
You may see alarmist headlines about Social Security, but don't be fooled.

Social Security can pay full benefits for at least another decade, giving policymakers time to carefully craft a funding package that protects the program's critical benefits. 3/ cbpp.org/blog/social-se…

Honestly the fact that the idea of giving people who need social security vouchers instead of money is doing the rounds again really makes my blood boil! Another short #Thread 1
How is this meant to work exactly? Would we only be able to get our shopping from approved stores and then only certain goods? What if you didn't live anywhere near one of the approved stores? What if you needed to pay for a service rather than a physical item? 2
For example, a repair to your dishwasher, washing machine or other such essential appliance. What happens if you need to buy something that isn't available in one of the approved stores but is nevertheless vital to your existence? Indeed, this boils down to the central question 3

As a disabled person who is not capable of work (a fact accepted by the DWP) I'm fed up of being fucking demonised and made to feel somehow 'unworthy'. Although I may not be directly targeted, the vile general rhetoric towards 'benefit claimants' is bad enough.
They could choose to come after me at any point they like, the constant background fear is absolutely dreadful to live with. I'm sure I'm not the only person who feels like this, and I'm also pretty sure that people who have never. experienced the DWP won't be able...2
To fully appreciate but this feels like. The rhetoric makes me think that the government would prefer it if didn't exist, now I may be overthinking things a bit, but the right-wing press does nothing but attack and demonise people on low incomes, while twunts like...3

Yesterday, Congress finally passed the must-pass, end-of-year budget bill. 1. I know we all hope for a big young-voter turnout. I have had a suspicion a lot will wait to vote in-person tomorrow, so I remain hopeful. But they are social issue voters for the most part and historically that has not been as reliable as bread-and-butter issue voters.

Watching the UK🇬🇧 self-immolate❤️‍🔥, first with Brexit and now the disastrous libertarian economic policies of Liz Truss, it’s time to debunk the Scarcity Myth. 1/🧵
#ScarcityMyth
If you’re catching up on the UK, read this @jaredbrock post.

“Churches and pubs are applying for grants to become ‘warm spaces’ just to keep the nation alive this winter. No one else can afford to turn their heat on.” #ScarcityMyth 2/

Of all the economic myths (my pinned tweet video debunks 8 of them), the #ScarcityMyth is the most pernicious because it creates a self-fulfilling prophecy. If we believe in it and act upon it, we are *guaranteed* scarcity. 3/

The fiscal year ends in just 2 weeks, so Congress must pass a stopgap funding bill (aka continuing resolution, or CR) for FY23.

That includes funds to administer Social Security & SSI, which together serve over *70M* Americans. 2/
Customer service delays at the Social Security Administration (SSA) are already causing serious problems for applicants & beneficiaries, who are enduring record-long waits for disability decisions, long hold times on the agency’s 800 number & other problems. 3/
