And toxic ghost from the past appears as DoD approvs #depleteduranium export to Ukraine: despite US overstating the case, the use of DU would only complicate conflict-pollution in #Ukraine and counters the global norm against its use 1/x
wsj.com/articles/u-s-s…
What past wars showed was that DU was not decisive. In the Gulf Wars, most tanks were destroyed with Hellfires and Maverick missiles. Tungsten rounds still are able to destroy Russian tanks, and DU was no silver bullet. 2/x wise-uranium.org/pdf/dumyths.pdf Image
What our @PAXforpeace research in #Iraq found was that the US was uninterested in clean-up and remediation of DU and contaminated materials, putting civilians at risk of exposure, in particular children playing on tanks and scrapmetal workers. 3/x paxforpeace.nl/wp-content/upl… Image

🧵 The Bosniaks in the Levant

Bushnak Arabic: بشناق, meaning "Bosniak", is a surname common among Levantines of Bosniak origin. Image
Those sharing this surname are the descendants of Bosniaks apprehensive of living under Christian rule after the 🇦🇹🇭🇺 occupation of Bosnia in 1878, who immigrated to Ottoman #Syria.
While not originally from one family, most Bosniaks who immigrated to the Levant adopted Bushnak as a common surname, attesting to their origins. Bushnak is also used colloquially among Palestinians to refer to someone who is fair-skinned.

Why would @CAIRNational support sanctioning 17 million more Muslims?

The US #Sanctions are designed to keep #Syria in ruins and to stop reconstruction of the country, and stop foreign investment.

Why did #Assad survive against all odds?

Losing was never an option

Alternative wasn’t going to involve retiring to a farm or taking up painting

Your own neck was first

Your entire sect were to follow quickly after

Of course you were going to call Iran/Russia or the Devil Image
But it wasn’t just Assad that made this calculus

Scores of different groups were going to be accused of being “regime supporters”

Their own necks were going to be next

The judge was going to be anyone who points fingers at you for being Shabih شبيح

@KevorkAlmassian
Western capitals & #Syria experts in the meantime were seeing the crisis from the prism of

Goodbye to dictatorship and hello to freedom and democracy

This rather simple but elegant narrative of the crisis was totally oblivious to the more real visceral & bloody nature of it

Jordanians want sanctions on Syria lifted

Jordan's exports to Syria increased by 23% during the first 7 months of 2022, but are not close to prewar levels.

Jordanian economists demand that the Caesar Act that disrupted trade be lifted.

“The international sanctions on #Syria must be lifted, and Jordanian-Syrian economic relations must return to the status quo ante,” wrote Musa Al Saket, a member of the Amman Chamber of Commerce.
“The sanctions are unfair to our economy & the Syrian people,” he wrote. “Twelve years since the war broke out, more than 90% of the #Syria population lives below the poverty line, with limited access to food and medicine. This is a major catastrophe,” Saket added:

How #Syria ‘s was could have turned out differently

It was June 6, 2011 when 120 army & security personnel were killed at Jisr al-Shoughour

Had Washington & Arab capitals dealt with this incident differently, countless lives would have been saved & so much misery avoided ==> Image
This is how @nytimes reported on the incident

Right off, the article mocked Govt ‘s characterization of those who killed the soldiers as armed thugs & it went on to highlight how locals disputed the Govt ‘s story

Most media outlets did the same

It was here that Arab & Western capitals could / should have taken a stand that taking up arms against a sitting Govt (yes, a HATED one) was unacceptable
