An advocacy colleague of mine just complained about having had to sit through a talk short of an hour on how to talk patients into participating in clinical trials *without* a single reference to what clinical trials have to deliver for patients, so here some explaining 🧵

in cancer, considering ignoring if it's a trial where the risk to yourself and your life is negligeable or you don't dare contradicting your oncologist anyway (though consider changing oncologist in that case)

1 An assault style weapon has been used in 18 of the 20 public mass shootings we've responded to since the Aurora Theater Mass Shooting that took our daughter, Jessi. They are weapons of war designed to turn a body into ground meat. They should not be in the hands of any civilian

As a Survivor of #GunViolence and a Trauma Surgeon at @hopkinsmedicine, I’ve seen this public health crisis from numerous vantage points.

Despite my own experience, nothing prepares you when the person you have to take care of is one of your own.

🧵
After walking in for Trauma call this AM, my colleague called with the most unexpected message.

Joe, are you on call?

Yes

Our fellow trauma surgeon was just shot and he is on his way to the trauma center.

Listening to that communication, I was frankly numb and in disbelief.
Realizing this was not some bad #AprilFoolsDay joke, I quickly gathered my things and headed down to the trauma bay to prepare the team.

As we gathered our incredible multi-disciplinary team, I could feel my heart racing not knowing exactly what type of injuries we would face.

That Time Natives Gave @MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred An Award: A Thread

Last week MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred decided that racial justice for Natives is over by announcing he was cool with the @braves racist name, chop, and chant.

#TheTimelsNow #NotYourMascot #ChangeTheName
Apparently Rob Manfred solved racism against Natives when he got Cleveland to stop wearing chief wahoo on the field in 2018.

#TheTimelsNow #NotYourMascot #ChangeTheName
Rob Manfred knows he's the best ever at solving all of the Native baseball racism because he has one Native friend, the National Congress of American Indians @NCAI1944, who gave him an award for it in 2019.

ATLANTA FANS ARE NOT RACIST: A Thread

Now that I have your attention:
I mean not *all* Atlanta fans are racist.

The @braves name, chop, and chant are 100% racist. As is Rob Manfred. As is anyone who perpetuates stereotypes that denigrate Natives.

#thetimeisnow #changethename
What people don't understand is that you can do and participate in things that are racist without being racist yourself. It's your understanding of what you are doing or participating in that makes the difference.
Lets talk about your Aunt Bea.

Aunt Bea loves baseball and is a huge ATL fan. She became a fan when they were the Boston Bees because it tickled her that they shared a name. Her fandom continued when they became the Boston @braves, then the Milwaukee braves, and now as Atlanta.

Yes. I described the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians using the word "pet" .

Since some Atlanta fans are using their cerebral cortices to remember the tomahawk chant instead of learning how actual words work I'll explain, not that they'll bother to admit they misunderstood.
English contains 8 parts of speech that have specific functions in a sentence: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, and articles.

For our purposes we'll focus on nouns and adjectives.
This is the sentence Atlanta fans are upset with. The contentious portion is "pet tribe", which people wrongly believe I used to compare EBCI with animals.

"Atlanta can buy a pet tribe in the Eastern Band of Cherokee but until this ends and they #changethename they are too."

#1--more than 80% of UN member states (155+ out of 193) already recognize this right via regional treaties, constitutions, or legislation, from Argentina to Zambia Image
#2--A rights-based approach, including R2HE, can equitably & effectively address the global environmental crisis--the climate emergency, biodiversity collapse, pervasive pollution & emerging infectious diseases spilling over from wildlife and livestock into people, like COVID-19 Image

9 yrs ago tonight I went to bed in peace. I have not known peace since. At the midnight premier of The Dark Knight Rises our Jessi was slaughtered with 11 others. The killer easily bought his arsenal online without a background check. People KNEW (1)
that something was wrong with him...including his parents & therapist. How many others are there out there that are not stable enough to be in procession of a firearm? How many others are purchasing arsenals on line without so much as a verification of (2)
there identity. How many other innocent lives will continue to be taken. Since our Jessi was slaughtered, 360,000 other families have learned how easy it is to have this nightmare happen to them. Don't be one of them. Get involved...(3)

1/ Eight people were killed & others were injured in a shooting at a rail yard in San Jose, CA today. The gunman was also dead.

This appears to be the 15th mass murder & 231st mass shooting in the first 146 days of 2021 Image
2/ As gun violence ⬆️ , investing in the communities closest to the pain of interpersonal violence & tightening our nation's lax gun laws should be an absolute priority for lawmakers -- particularly those who *campaign* on these issues every election cycle #TheTimeIsNow
3/ Gun violence getting worse:

-  more mass shootings in 2021 (at this point in 2020, there were 135 now at 231)
- homicides in 34 cities ⬆️ 49% (compared to 2019) & 24% (compared to 2020)
- deaths at hands of racially motivated extremists⬆️
- threats against lawmakers ⬆️  107%

22 years since Columbine, we still have a serious epidemic of Gun Violence in this country.

The solutions are straightforward but sadly there are still many opponents to change who still push the lies that their rights would end up being infringed on.
(2/5)
Nobody is infringing on anyone’s individual rights. We’re calling for background checks on PEOPLE, not guns. Mandatory Safety courses for PEOPLE, not guns. Stricter negligence penalties for PEOPLE, not guns. This isn’t about just the guns, it’s the people too.
(3/5)
Many law abiding Gun owners are in favor of these reforms. Sadly, the National Rifle Association is lobbying for a status quo that sees countless of American lives lost to what seems to be an endless amount of tragic shootings.

1/ As we commemorate the 22nd anniversary of the shooting in Columbine High School today, it looks like there's a mass shooting event unfolding at a Stop & Shop in West Hempstead, NY. It appears that 3 people are shot, 1 may be dead, shooter got away: nydailynews.com/new-york/nyc-c…
2/ We don't know all the details, but early reports suggest this may be workplace related. Unfortunately, such shootings are common

We just experienced the FedEx shooting in IN on Thursday, which left 8 dead. So far, we've had at least 16 shootings at workplaces in 2021
3/ We absolutely need Congressional action to strengthen our gun laws

Since Columbine 22 years ago, at least 748,192 people have died from guns...we've all waited long enough and frankly we refuse to wait any longer #TheTimeIsNow

Today's the anniversary of the Senate’s deadly failure to pass gun violence prevention reform via the filibuster.

What happened on 4/17/13 shows exactly why we must #AbolishTheFilibuster — & why we must stop at nothing to push the Senate to pass background checks today.

Thread
The legislation that was killed on the Senate floor 8 years ago today was in response to the Sandy Hook shooting, where 20 first-graders & 6 school employees were senselessly murdered.

Americans across the country, DEMANDED Congress strengthen our weak gun laws. @NewtownAction
In response, the Senate took up a series of gun reform bills. The reforms included a bipartisan bill to expand Brady Background Checks, aka “Manchin-Toomey”.

Why background checks? A shocking 1 in 5 guns in America is sold without a background check.
