It is 30 years since the Tiananmen Square massacr and the Chinese government’s censorship campaign has been so successful, it is now almost impossible for Chinese people to mark the occasion online 1/6 news.vice.com/en_us/article/… #Tiananmen30
Activists have been forced to use increasing obscure images, memes and coded references to avoid China’s censorship machine — all tracked by Dr. Kingwa Fu @JMSCHKU 2/6 news.vice.com/en_us/article/… ImageImageImageImage
But without any reference points these efforts are lost on young people. "You need some inspiration from the past to motivate you to pursue a higher goal, but young people don't have the references,” @hrw’s China expert @Yaqiu said. 3/6 news.vice.com/en_us/article/…

1/ Tuesday, June 4 marks the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre. For 30 years, PRC has suppressed this event blocking even any reference to June 4. #tiananmen30
2/ Every year before the anniversary, the PRC increases its efforts to censor or erase this stain. This includes preemptively arresting those promoting greater freedom in China (some whom I have met). cbsnews.com/video/china-hi… #tiananmen30
3/ Just as Lincoln at Gettysburg said it is for us, the living, to remain dedicated to the cause the soldiers gave their last ounce of devotion, so too is up to us those who saw and remembered to continue to spread the words and images of what happened. #tiananmen30

Different from other years on this #Tiananmen30 June 4, is that Chinese state media is actually mentioning #Tiananmen on online channels but uses it as an occasion to push Party propaganda with Tiananmen as a symbol of Chinese pride instead of representing Chinese amnesia. [1/3] ImageImage
Another difference is the message that's specifically directed at the English-language social media sphere, one being from Hu Xijin/Global Times, that stresses that Chinese people "don't want to obsess about the incident anymore."[2/3]
Quoting: "Its bloody ending gradually forgotten. Since then China has taken a successful development path, giving people a more rational perspective on the movement." These same messages are not to be found on Chinese social media. Erasing is not the same as forgetting. [3/3] Image
