I have been hard at work on a project focused on Black women WWII #Veterans so as #VeteransDay approaches I wanted to share some of what I’ve learned in recent years that these books helped with. ImageImageImage
More than one million Black women and men served in every branch of the armed forces during WWII. They were seeking victory over fascism abroad & victory over racism at home - the Double V. Spoiler alert: It didn’t really work out.
But part of what these resources illuminate is what a powerful role institutions like the Black press & leaders in the Black Cabinet like Mary McLeod Bethune had advocating for them to serve in branches that were not yet integrated in the 1940s.

An ongoing 🛢️ about why Raphael Warnock is not the right choice for Georgia:

Vote @HerschelWalker

"Warnock is not the moderate he portrays himself to be. He has ties to socialists and extreme groups...has attacked American evangelicals from the pulpit. He is a divisive figure with far-Left policies, and all Americans should stand up against this hate.”heritageaction.com/press/heritage…

It is Armistice Day tomorrow - in 1918, at the 11th Hour, of the 11th Day, of the 11th Month, the guns fell silent ... good wishes to all who are commemorating #RemembranceDay Image
Good morning all on this Armistice Day/ #RemembranceDay , the 104th anniversary of the Great War's end. Australia's Great War (1914-1919):
- national population of 5m
- 416,809 enlisted
- more than 60,000 killed in action
- 156,000 wounded, gassed, or taken prisoner Image
My grandfather in Aug 1918 with his beloved sister Vera before going to France. My late grandfather would arrive for the Allied advance to the Nov 11 armistice. Like many, he would feel guilty for having survived. So many friends killed & wounded in the Great War. #RemembranceDay Image

A heartfelt thank you to all the veterans out there, human and canine. This is Agbar, who I wrote about and photographed extensively when I was in Kinston NC. #VeteransDay (Thread: 1/?) Image
Agbar served four tours in Afghanistan, jumped out of airplanes as a member of the 101st Airborne, worked on a team discovering IEDs and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant. (Photo from Military Working Dogs in Facebook) 2/? Image
Agbar, a Malinois, was first deployed in 2010. After four tours and numerous awards including the Valorous Unit Award and Presidential Unit Citation, he retired in February 2014. (3/4) Image

#11Novembre #ArmisticeDay Today it is 103 years since the Signature of the #armistice however the state of war persisted until the signature of the Treaty of Versailles in June 28th 1919
In France it is remembered as #ArmisticeDay , in other allied countries it changed to #RemembranceDay and in the US was changed to #VeteransDay
The WWI was called initially optimistically The war to end all wars, today it is used more ironically as the WWII brought more devastation. It took me a lot to starting to get an idea of understanding the world before, during the 2 world wars, and after... ⤵️

Today on #VeteransDay, I want to post a message that will likely be a little different than most Veterans Day messages. :)

This message is both for veterans and friends and families of veterans....
First off, THANK YOU to everyone who's served. Your sacrifice should never be minimized. My hope is that all veterans get the care & attention they deserve. 🙏

Veteran suicide is still a big problem and many vets deal with persistent healthcare challenges from the VA.
We need to remedy these issues and understand the TRAUMA that veterans deal with. Whether it be the trauma of war, the trauma of losing a friend, or the trauma of dealing with recurring injury, veterans go through a lot.

Veterans are also susceptible to undue influence.

Apropos of this earlier mini-thread on Rittenhouse & exclusion/inclusion, wanted to share a few #VeteransDay thoughts on US military service & those competing visions of America. #twitterstorians

At one of my book talks for We the People back in 2019, an audience member asked a challenging, excellent question about how many of my examples of an inclusive America seem to come from wars & military service.
rowman.com/ISBN/978153812…
They had a point: in that talk alone I focused at length on Japanese American soldiers in WWII, the US Colored Troops during the Civil War, & the “Manilamen,” the Filipino Americans who played such a vital role in the War of 1812's culminating Battle of New Orleans.

With all due respect Senator, if you wanted to thank us for our service you would protect our voting rights. Yet, you won’t even make time to meet with disabled AZ vets and your staff have been downright disrespectful. Take for instance our last interaction with your office.1/4
Our team brought over a dozen AZ vets to meet with your staff about voting rights. Your staff was silent the entire call and while disabled vets were sharing their concerns about anti-voting laws, the call suddenly ended. Then ignored our efforts to follow up about next steps.2/4
This is just one of many cases of disrespect shown towards AZ veterans by you and your office. That’s why, after months of being ignored and used as props, five members of your veterans advisory council felt they had no choice but to resign. 3/4

On #VeteransDay, we come together in gratitude for the heroes who have answered our nation’s call to serve. Today, & every day, let us vow to honor this sacred pledge: just as the military leaves no one behind on the battlefield, we leave no veteran behind when they return home.
Since our earliest days, and in our darkest hours, generations of patriots have proudly stepped forward to defend our nation — and after their tours of duty, many veterans have blessed our nation with their continued service in our communities.
The Democratic House has worked to honor the valor and sacrifice of our veteran community. And Congress applauds the leadership of @POTUS Biden to end the ban on transgender Servicemembers as well as developing a new strategy to prevent suicides in military & veterans community.

In case you missed my Veterans Day message yesterday.
"Today is Veterans Day, originally known as Armistice Day, commemorating the end of WWI. I have observed this day with my family, community, and Veterans since I was born. It's a day that many remember those lost in service.
It's a day where we are mindful and thankful to those who serve our Armed Forces. As the daughter of a Vietnam Veteran, I often reflect on the circumstances that left my then 17-year-old father drafted into a war he did not sign up to serve.

I chose to enlist in the U.S. Navy at age 18. From the age of 14 I knew that is what I wanted to do.
I didn’t join so I could hurt or bully anyone, I joined because I thought it was how I could best serve my country and my world. I was discharged for medical reasons and eventually found other ways to give back to the place I love.
Today I hold close all veterans out there who understand there is no greater victory than peace. That’s why #VeteransDay is also known as #ArmisticeDay:

This #VeteransDay, we honor the millions of veterans and their families who have sacrificed so much in service to our country. Today, I’m proud to highlight some of the veterans who are enriching our Orange County community.

I hope you’ll join me in thanking our veterans. 🧵⬇️
Our district is home to nearly 30,000 veterans, including Martha—who served in the U.S. Marines Corps for seven years and the Reserves for five. She was the first woman to complete the Marine Corps Security Forces School, and she now works with college students in our area.
Our office has been proud to partner with Bobby, who served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. A tireless advocate for veterans and small business owners, Bobby is now President and Executive Director of the Black Chamber of Commerce of Orange County.

To celebrate this #VeteransDay, here’s a feature about how Army veteran Frank Diaz started @TinHutBBQ, a food truck business that has become a lifeline to other vets. inc.com/leigh-buchanan…
Since @TinHutBBQ's launch 7 years ago, it has employed 65 veterans or veterans' family members, accounting for roughly a quarter of the workforce. Diaz has helped many of those in their struggles with PTSD and addiction.
Diaz's other priority is to provide active and retired service members with the kind of food he associates with relaxed good times.

My grandfathers, their brothers, all saw active duty in a time of war and during other operations. Service helped them pay for medical school, law school, college but that wasn't why they served. They served because they love this country and it didn't come without sacrifice.
2/

My family came to beautiful Monterey County for similar reasons. Community and further service. My grandfather's brother was here at the language school learning Portuguese. He was one of the youngest graduates of Iowa law school and rose to the rank of Colonel.
3/

Their commitment to our Country always inspired me to do more - without fear or favor.

I've always been committed to the health of my home community because of the lessons I learned at the dinner table, or long conversations about the world and elsewhere.

Enjoy #VeteransDay
