Abebech Gobena more famously known as "Africa's Mother Theresa," is the founder of Ethiopia's oldest orphanage. She was born in a small rural village called Shebel in 1938.
She was only a month-old when her father was killed during the Ethio-Italian war, so she was raised by her grandparents until the age of nine. (2/9)
She then was married at the age of 10 without her consent per the tradition of her community, but revolting against her marriage, she ran away from home to Addis Ababa where she scraped a basic education, gained a job as a quality controller and remarried. (3/9)

On International Day of #WomenInScience, I share the forgotten story of Einstein’s first wife
And her role in inspiring his research and even possibly being a coauthor

Likewise, Albert wrote to Mileva on 4 April 1901, saying that his friend Michele Besso “visited his uncle on my behalf, Prof. Jung, one of the most influential physicists in Italy and gave him a copy of our article.”
When Habicht questioned Mileva’s choice not to include her name, she replied making a pun in German: “Warum? Wir beide sind nur ein Stein.“ (“Why? The two of us are but one stone”, meaning, we are one entity).

Mileva Maric was the only woman in the physics program w Einstein. She failed her exams a few weeks after discovering she was pregnant and then dropped out. They both were working on 2 papers each. A few years later he published 4 papers that became known as a miracle. No
physicist has had as strong a year in history. Their marriage suffered but she would not grant a divorce- until he promised Mileva the entire Nobel Prize if he were to win it. In 1922, he won for his work of the 1905 “miracle year.” In their love letters, Einstein refers to her

Today is #WomenInScience Day, so please allow me to introduce you to some of the #WomenInSTEM who have made an impact in my career.
I hope you'll give them a follow so you can keep up with them every day of the year
Let me start with sharks.
@BiminiSharkGirl is the founder of @Sharks4Kids and educates students all across the globe on the importance of protecting sharks.
#WomenInScience
#WomenInSTEM
It's hard keeping up with @leahmeth
We first worked together in 2012(!) to create @TheSharkStanley, the little character who helped protect sharks at #CITES2013
We later retooled him to create shark sanctuaries.

Let's make and retain #WomenInScience and #WomenInSTEM! Need some hints about where to start? HERE 👏 WE ✊ GO 👩🏽‍🔬
(with 📚 references!)
Ensure women are equitably represented in #scicomm multimedia, especially in video, so that young women can see themselves in #STEM

Also, ignore the haters:

Mary Anning was an English fossil collector, dealer, and paleontologist who became known for important finds she made in Jurassic marine fossil beds in the cliffs along the English Channel at Lyme Regis in the county of Dorset in Southwest England. #WomenInScience
Anning searched for fossils in the area's Blue Lias cliffs, particularly during the winter months when landslides exposed new fossils that had to be collected quickly before they were lost to the sea. She nearly died in 1833 during a landslide that killed her dog, Tray.
Her discoveries included the first ichthyosaur skeleton correctly identified; the first two more complete plesiosaur skeletons found; the first pterosaur skeleton located outside Germany; and important fish fossils.

11.02.19 #womeninscience day, I'll be sharing some of my favourite scientist sisters in this thread🔬👩🏾‍🔬
The first entry is none other than my big sis, Dr. Faiza Hassan, a remarkable woman: BSc & PhD in Chemical Engineering from @unibirmingham & an MSc in Public Policy & Management from @SOAS. Summarising her achievements are like scooping a handful of seawater & calling it a sea.
Currently the Deputy Chief of Party at DFID Somalia Revenue Reform & Trade Facilitation Project, @Global_Nomad_ has an incredibly impressive career portfolio, including senior positions in social policy, education & governance.

Action plan before you leave. Also make clear any further delays are unacceptable. Action plans, strong regulations/policies must be instituted immediately. Petition is excellent example.
@McLNeuro @DrAilshire @JMGrohNeuro @sbarolo @hormiga @risss_evans @KKTreseder @SarahEMyhre @batssiki @sbrietz @NIHDirector 1- Many excellent thoughts/suggestions in thread. Why the resistance to actively creating strong policies against #SexualHarassment to protect #WomenInMedicine #WomenInScience #WomenInSTEM #WomeninEngineering, even when called out repeatedly by many. What’s the real issue here?

I would say that Cuba is a land of many contradictions, contagious music (a way of life), old classic cars, warm-hearted people and sandy beaches. My home town is Santiago de las Vegas, a small locality situated 20 Km away from Cuba’s capital city, Havana.
I was the late an only child. My parents, always loving and caring, taught me that we are not entitled to anything, unless we work hard to deserve it. I feel really grateful to them for opening my eyes to one of the crudest realities of life. @IWS_Network #voicesIWS #IWS
Both my parents were middle school and high school teachers. Other older relatives had been teachers too. So it was not surprising that I liked playing “a la escuelita” (Spanish for “little school”). @IWS_Network #voicesIWS #WomenInScience

Hello, I am Edna Matta. I was born in #Ibague, known as #Colombia’s #CityofMusic. A beautiful place near snow-covered volcanos (Ruiz, Santa Isabel and Tolima), large expanses of paramo forest, lakes and streams where a diverse array of animal and plant species coexist
My story starts with #powerful, #strong #women in my #family. I was the third of 4 children and my mom #firstMentor had to raise us practically alone, since my father had to work in a different city, 20h away by car

Starting "Voices without Frontiers" #VoicesIWS
A program by @IWS_Network to promote awareness about the challenges & lessons learned by #Immigrant and #International #WomenInScience

I was born & raised in Chicoral, Colombia. A tiny town in the middle of the Andes Cordillera.
I attended Nuestra Señora del Rosario school, located in Espinal, 15Km away from Chicoral. Due to the high heat by noon, all schools start really early back home. This meant, I had to wake up at 5am to attend school every morning since I was 4 years old. #VoicesIWS
I did well in math and science in elementary and high school, so I chose to study clinical microbiology. Although coming from a low-middle income family, I was able to attend university, thanks to my parents’ effort to prioritize education over other commodities. #VoicesIWS
