For this weeks #WTFWednesdays, let's jump into #hysteria

1/ The concept of "hysteria" has a long and troubled history in psychiatry. It dates back to ancient Greece and was initially used to describe a wide range of physical and mental symptoms in women.
2/ "Hysteria" comes from the Greek word "hystera," meaning uterus, reflecting the historical belief that women's mental & physical symptoms were related to the uterus and its movements. This belief led to the notion that women's symptoms could be "cured" by removing the uterus.
3/ Over the centuries, the diagnosis of hysteria was used to blame women for their own suffering and pathologize normal emotions and behaviors. This led to a widespread belief that women were inherently unstable and prone to mental illness.

Born in 1919, Debalina Mazumder and Manobina Roy were initiated into photography when they were just 13 by their father, Binode Behari Sen Roy, a school principal in the princely state of Ramnagar in the United Provinces. Image

тАЬAfter Debalina and Manobina got married, their photographic pursuits had to be accommodated within their growing responsibilities as wives and mothers amidst new households in Calcutta and Bombay. But there were occasions that brought respite and greater freedom.

Initially, I was scared to work with men, but I was brave and thought to myself, I could face anything", recalled Wing Commander (retd) Vijayalakshmi Ramanan in a 2018 interview.

The first woman officer of IAF, Wing Commander Ramanan, was a breaker of glass ceilings in the truest sense.

She was not only the first woman to wear a saree as a uniform, but she also designed it in the signature IAF blues.

How Greek Hellenism caused women to be curtailed through history:
In 507 BC in Ancient Greece, a thinker named Cleisthenes started a political ideology known as Democracy.
Democracy, meaning the 'rule of the people' in Greek, stated that instead of having tyrants who inherit the title of ruler rule over the people, people who were mature enough to make a decision would vote for a ruler.
