Dear @AndreaSCousins - Do you really want to raise Queens Obstetricians’ medical liability insurance premiums to a quarter million $$$ per yr. ?
Passing S6636 will do just that! In the name of #WomensHealthcare Please consider the implications
@AndreaSCousins Here’s a real word example - Queens OB #MedicalLiability premium would rise to ~ $250K per yr (actuary) Consider young doc w Student debt

Wood burning can cause cancer, esp lung cancer, respiratory disease, heart disease, dementia, premature death, & other health issues which are devastating. Wood burning emits more CO2 than gas. Inaction and silence on this affects everyone.
No laws to stop residential burning (fireplaces, fire pits, backyard burning, planned burns), & no public campaign on the dangers of residential burning means anyone can burn and emit smoke into your home. No action now, leaves you, the next generation, & environment unprotected

The second statement in the tweet below by @MistyGedlinske is simply a lie, meant to mislead. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for menopausal women (of any age) has absolutely zero to do with 'gender affirmation'.
#WomensHealth Tweet from @MistyGedlinske:...
Wrong. Once it gets to the point where healthy tissue and organs are being surgically removed or grossly handicapped through inappropriate medications, & rendering the rest of your life prone to bad unhealthiness, society very much gets to have a say.

Tweet from @MistyGedlinske:...
Happy to oblige, but you're mistaken if you think you can try for an 'argument' from mistaken personal authority. It gets down to logic; & here *everyone* gets a say, not just you or me. You're trying to conflate two different things, & that won't work.

Thoughts on #endometriosis from the perspective of medical education 🧵
USMLE and shelf examinations make endo seem super easy. It’s a young woman with pelvic pain & some combo of infertility, dyspareunia, and dyschezia

Throw some OCPs at the problem and boom, case closed
Students don’t talk about endo as a cause of urinary symptoms. Many have it on their list as a cause of heavy abnormal bleeding.

Most have no idea that MRI is useful for diagnosis and few know when to refer for surgery or how to manage patients after surgery

Can’t talk about #womenshealth w/o mentioning #maternal death -unfortunately on the rise in America...how does one of the richest countries have the highest rate of maternal & infant mortality?🧵npr.org/sections/healt… @acog @ACOGPregnancy
We have high c-sx rates, low prenatal care, high chronic disease rates in our mothers. Post-partum care is a single visit at 6 weeks. Working pregnant moms may opt to induce labor for the 'convenience' of optimizing their leave...
Speaking of leave, the US is the one of the ONLY industrialized countries to NOT have ANY paid parental leave. If that doesn't reveal value in a society, I don't know what does. Punchline: the value isn't in family. No wonder our divorce rates and rates of mental health and… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…

#womenshealth is #disparate because medicine evolved in a patriarchal society. Male presentations of disease are “typical”, female ones are “atypical”. Society becoming more #gender #equal, doesn’t undo the historical bias of medicine we still rely our practice on - as a result,… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
While #postpartum care is an obvious example. @American_Heart published that women don’t classically present with chest pain like men in heart attacks, but instead may have fatigue or insomnia. This can be easily written off by doctors as “stress” ahajournals.org/doi/full/10.11…
“Stress” is a generous explanation I hear of writing off symptoms. More commonly, I hear “dramatic” or “being extra” as explanations. Those aren’t ICD codes, but implicit biases disproportionately assigned to female patients.

My #FGM Confession🙏🏽
"I Circumcised Many Girls Because Many Men Reject Uncircumcised Girls And Often Return Them To Their Maiden Homes To Be Circumcised!"

Ms. Nkotito Oyie (58) Recalls:
“I started circumcising girls when I was 25 years of age. The job is well paying as I charged
Sh2000 for every girl I circumcised. During high seasons like long holidays, I could cut up to 10 girls a day.
My skills were in high demand as it was a taboo to find a girl who is not circumcised in the Maa community.
Girls get circumcised as early as nine years because of the
pressure from the community. At this stage, the circumcised girl is viewed as a mature person who can play a wife's roles.
Many girls opt for #FGM because many men in the Maasai Community reject uncircumcised girls and often return them to their maiden homes to be circumcised.

"They Cut Off My Clitoris And Threw It To Chickens To Eat!"

Mrs Layla Recalls Hers:
"I had just passed my school exam; instead of rewarding me for my good grades, my family gave me a midwife, locked me in a room and surrounded me.
My grandma and two neighboring
women were among the women who gathered around me that day.
Living in the village, like everyone else, we raised chickens at home. When this woman cut this part of my body, I was in pain and crying when I saw her threw my clitoris (soaked in blood) to the chickens, and they
gathered to eat it!
Since that day, I have been unable to eat chicken and don't even want to raise the poultry in my yard.
After the #FGM, I wanted to play and feel free but I couldn't walk unless I had my legs wide apart.
It took me a long time to understand what happened to me,

Did you know that people with mental illness tend to die earlier than the general population? The lifespan reduction can be anywhere from 7 to 30 years. (1/4)
Recent evidence from large population studies of over 7 million people shows that people with all mental disorders are more likely to die early deaths. Men are losing 10 years of life, while women are losing 7 years. (2/4) #womenshealth #menshealth
Contrary to popular belief, suicide is not the primary cause of death among people with mental illness. The main causes are cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and dementia. (3/4) researchsquare.com/article/rs-184…

🗣 “Why am I in so much pain? Why is no one listening to me?”

It took nearly two decades for Chetna Mistry to be diagnosed with #endometriosis. Charities are calling for more research into women’s health so others don’t suffer a similar experience.

nationalworld.com/health/woman-1…
When Chetna Mistry was in her early 20s, she started suffering from extremely painful periods.

She visited her GP, who told her it was normal. But the pain was so bad that she couldn’t go out with friends, struggled to survive a day at work, and frequently ended up bed-bound. Image
“I just wanted to know what was happening to me,” Chetna told @NationalWorld. “Why am I in so much pain? Why is no one else experiencing this? Why is no one listening to me?”

Chetna returned to her GP, and the solution was to trial her on contraceptive pills and painkillers. Image

1) A common misconception in Asian Twitter & Reddit spaces is that AMs & WFs have lower rates of STDs than AFs, implying AMs are more incel than AFs. However stats from @CDCgov indicate otherwise. A long thread. #STDawareness #asian #asianmalewhitefemale #whitemaleasianfemale
2) The claim that AMs and WFs have lower rates of STDs than AFs come from this study by Hahm et al: guttmacher.org/journals/psrh/…, which found that AAPI females report STDs four times more than AAPI males & about 50% more than WFs. #AAPI #STDawareness #STDfacts #Asiansgonewild
3) However, if you look at Hahm et al's method of measuring STD rates, it's just a question asking if a doctor or nurse told the participant they had certain STDs, including HPV, bacterial vaginosis and nongonococcal vaginitis. guttmacher.org/journals/psrh/… #STDawareness #AAPI

#pwME #LongCovid who menstruate (or used to):

*BEFORE* getting ill with #MECFS or long covid, did you have particularly painful #periods?

See notes below for some clarification

#menstruation #WomensHealth
1. Post vax long covid included as long covid

2. Realise theres overlap between ME and LC, please pick what you identify with

3. If you took meds which stopped the pain but without meds your periods were particularly painful, please select "yes"
4. Because i often get DMs telling me the problems with my polls (which is why I turn comments off): its a twitter poll with max 4 options, its not perfect, you dont have to answer, and i realise this doesnt capture the full picture, etc. Im just curious is all! 😊

"I Was Circumcised Twice Before The Age Of 16!"
Teliwel Diallo Recalls Hers:
"When I was eight years old, my mother told me that it was time for me to become a woman. She took me somewhere. I met other #Girls, some friends and girls from the neighboring village.
It was a big #day. I didn’t know anything about excision. I was feeling happy inside. I did not know the consequences and pain of excision.
We were maybe one hundred girls. Everyone was waiting her turn. I could hear the cries of the #girl before me. I was frozen. I could not run
because it would be a dishonor for my #family. I was wondering whether I should run away or stay, but I didn’t have the choice.
I heard the #Girls crying. My turn came. It was atrocious. Four #women caught me, put me down, opened my sex and cut me. I cried out loudly. I feel that

This #InternationalWomensDay I’d like to remind my doctor colleagues that medicine has an androcentric history that may impact upon women patients. That woman isn’t « difficult », she’s under-researched and we know less (and even less has been translated to practice). 🧵
We can do Better. Women are also represented less in medical and anatomical textbooks. Here are some papers for further information.
