Imagine you rent a $873,600 home for $17,000/yr, or $1417/mo. You pay $27,000 upfront for landscaping.

Your lease is 35 years. You pay no upkeep.

Your annual rent increase is 1%. By Year 35 you’re paying $2,000/mo, but with inflation you really pay LESS than $1417 #yyccc

Now you also agree to contribute $13,200 towards a $52,000 guest house at the back that is open to the public.

Of course your guests get to stay there, too #yyccc

Oh yeah. You earn revenue from this place!

You charge entry for all the parties you’ll hold there - and extra for drinks, food, and merch.

And people like your parties! According to Statistic you historically bill $120,000+ USD a year in your current “dump”. #yyccc

Coming out of the gates with addiction/mental health framing, which is extremely corrosive, as it ignores the primary reason why people are dying: a poisoned unregulated drug supply.
Milliken: "addiction, homelessness, and public safety issues" -- they're doing everything they can to conflate these three things.
This is wrong: by far, the people in greatest danger are those whose basic needs aren't being met, and it's because we turn our back on them.

Since I left City Council I have worked to avoid commenting on Council directly. Ex-councillors get asked a lot for their thoughts & opinions on what Council is doing. I tried to avoid that. I remember how annoying (& boring) it was to hear from ex-cllrs. #yyccc 1/12
We used to think “If you still wanted the job you should have stayed”. I loved my job as a City Councillor, I loved it to the very last minute. I love that I decided to not run again. Life if always full of adventure & discovery, I have always relished & sought that #yyccc 2/12
Sure, I have fired off missives on SM, specifically in the twitter realm, about issues, comments, decisions of Council. Twitter is a very narrow self-selected group of #polinerds 3/12

This took 7 months of heavy, difficult, disturbing reporting, only made possible with the courage of six former victims who spoke to me, and still I don't feel like my job is done.
Some unanswered questions I hope you can can help me with (DMs are open/please RT) #yyc #yyccc …🧵
1. Michael Gregory used prostate cancer/pity to get sexual favours from students, claiming orgasms were for pain relief, and take leaves of absences. All sources believe diagnosis was faked. Does anyone have contradicting information? Did he have any genuine medical issues?
2. He also claimed to have close connections with RCMP and organized criminals. Was this also a charade used to intimidate and silence victims and adversaries?
Also claimed he was adopted—but was it merely lies to ingratiate himself with victim who was adopted child?

A special meeting of council is set to begin on Coun. @seanchucalgary. Here's a background story written yesterday by @BillKaufmannjrn. #yyc #yyccc calgaryherald.com/news/local-new…
All of council is present. Only Coun. @gccarra has dialled in. Chu is here in the chambers. He is opposed to the agenda. #yyc #yyccc
Gondek is going over the accusations, reading from a CBC news article that broke the story. "Chu says he was found guilty of misconduct for touching the girl's leg under a table in a public place." #yyc #yyccc

Please ignore & block accounts that are clearly trolling me & my story. Certain individuals are well known for having multiple sock puppet accounts. Sean Chu’s one time lawyer former Justice Minister Jonathan Denis seemingly had many sock supporters.🚩🧦 cbc.ca/news/canada/ca…
Several of these sock puppet accounts / operators not only troll me, they also troll @DruhFarrell @gccarra @kourtpenner @CWalcottYYC @albertaNDP @liberal_party etc. They also happen to praise many connected w/Sean Chu such as @DanWMcLean who is friends with many of my harassers.
City Councillor @DanWMcLean watched #UCP AH drunkenly & viciously verblly attack me in the middle of a restaurant regarding Sean Chu sexually assaulting me as a minor. Dan & his (former Jono Denis) staffer Chad Barber did nothing to intervene. Dan told ME not to fight w/AH. 🚩

I will make a public statement in due course. I will speak about the more than 25 years of trauma and also of the terrorizing of myself and those close to me. I will call out the lies told publicly by Sean Chu. I will name those who have been threatening and harassing me. #abpoli
I never wanted my worst life trauma to be public. I don’t know the motives of whoever leaked it. Thank you to all those who gave me and my story a voice when I was prevented from having one. Your courage and compassion for a child of 25 years ago is amazing & deeply appreciated.
Many have tried to silence me or to misuse my trauma & story for their personal motivations. Many of those people hold elected office or are directly adjacent to them. Most are powerful & wealthy. Some are people I called friends or colleagues. I will not be silent any longer.

⚠️ This Tweet Has Graphic Images ⚠️

Today I was driving in the NE in and around the neighbourhoods when I was about to turn around and head home when I saw someone flag me down.

A older gentleman and his girlfriend asked me if I had any water or anything to eat. @cmcalgary
I pulled over, put my flashers on. I got out to grab them some water and snacks and saw the older gentleman limping & in obvious pain.

When I say hobbling I mean every few steps he stopped to catch his breath because he was in so much pain.

That’s when I said I’d come to them.
I grabbed some bottles of water, snacks, some backpacks, and asked them if they needed anything else.

He told me his bandages had dried to his skin and that he was refused care at a place here in Calgary when he asked for a dressing change.

See the orange?

It's set to become one of 5 new suburbs in #yyc.

I found myself wondering what's in this orange area.

Turns out it's an intact riparian area, on the way to being destroyed because of our relentless outward growth.

A🧵on what we're losing 1/ #yyccc #abpoli
This is the former Ricardo Ranch. It's 570 hectares and was previously part of an Area Structure Plan engage.calgary.ca/RicardoRanch

As the maps show, environmentally sensitive areas are acknowledged, but barley mentioned in the plan, with few concrete promises of protection. 2/
Regardless, there will be 16,000-20,000 people planned to live in this sensitive, intact area. To see what the future holds, you just have to look across Deerfoot 3/

BINGO. Councillor Walcott nails it. Councillors have been asking for more analysis on growth & climate. Walcott: we're just trying to justify something we can't do: greenfield development. Bad for enviro. Will increase citywide GHGs by 1%. More analysis won't change that. #yyccc
Walcott: "If climate's holding you up from this decision—you already have that info. This is +1%. There's no more info that's going to tell you we can be climate-friendly overall net & grow...the q is are you ok with 1% & the benefits that come w 8 new comms? That's the q" #yyccc
A lot of today's #yyccc committee meeting has amounted to councillors preemptively trying to justify/rationalize what they know they can't justify, in light of them declaring a climate emergency last Nov.

Thread on urban sprawl and climate in Calgary. Right now #yyccc is looking at 8 potential new communities on city outskirts. Also looking at approving a new climate strategy next Tues. How do these intersect? Let's look at some of the fine print. 1/
Calgary's climate strategy actually downplays the most powerful tool city hall has: regulation. It's at the bottom of the list. Why? Because it's politically unpalatable. The strategy favours education, "capacity building" and softer approaches instead.
From strategy: "Typically, regulations are the most direct way to reduce emissions, but can be politically sensitive to implement quickly. Therefore, The City can use the other approaches to help build support, capacity, buy-in & increased adoption before introducing regulation"

So you've made that critical, brave decision to step up to the greatest challenge in human history. A #ClimateActionHero is always born asking the exact same question as those born before:

"So...what the heck do I do now?"

Take heart.

You're not alone.

This 🧵's for you
Answering a call to action (after first ignoring or refusing it) is textbook superhero origin story material, which means the first steps of your adventure are already taken. But Climate's been in popular culture since 2006. Something specific's compelling you now. What is it? /2
Something drove the point home to you. Activated you. Take a moment and enshrine it because you'll be explaining it time and time again, to allies, detractors, society's gate-keepers and even future #ClimateActionHeroes just like you. It's #TheBigWhy & every hero's got one /3

Dear @jkenney,

You have repeatedly implied that the situation at Coutts is not in your control as you have no control over the RCMP in Alberta, & it's the RCMP's responsibility to enforce the law.

I understand as Premier or any MLA, you should not meddle in the day to day business of the RCMP and must avoid any conflicts of interests, etc.; however, in the Provincial Police Service Agreement dated April 1, 2012, between Alberta and Canada, Section 7.1:

"For the purposes of this Agreement, the Commanding Officer will act under the direction of the Provincial Minister in aiding in the administration of justice in the Province and in carrying into effect the laws in force therein".

1/6 I have spent the last 12+ hours reflecting on the provincial announcement to lift pandemic restrictions. In that time, I have seen concern from healthcare workers, teachers, parents, businesses & many other engaged Calgarians. All feel their voices went unheard.
2/6 As municipalities have said throughout the pandemic, success in public health is best achieved through trust & partnerships. We pleaded for more engagement, more access to data, more input into mitigation measures. It fell on deaf ears, repeatedly. We were frozen out.
3/6 Just as municipalities felt sidelined, so did professionals & their representative associations who also pleaded for their perspectives to be considered. Parents who formed advocacy groups were equally ignored. It seemed that no one could break through.

What concerns me most about the protests in the inner city, and elsewhere, is the blatant disregard for others.

People from around Calgary have deadlocked downtown neighbourhoods, impacting businesses, denying access to health care - in the name of freedom. 1/5
But freedom in our society exists in the social contract we uphold with eachother.

Protestors across this nation are too tied to an American concept of inalienable freedoms.

These protestors want to live unimpeded by the responsibility to care for others. 2/5
Our freedom is tied to our agreement to care for one another in tandem with our commitments to ourselves.

It is a fine balance we often fail at, but it is in our efforts to succeed at that balance where our society shines.

This is what is under attack. 3/5

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney, who did not attend the COVID-19 news conference today, is live on his Facebook page. I’ll Tweet the highlights.
Kenney says the announcement of the end of the Restriction Exemption Program and other COVID public health measures will be made “early next week.”
"There will likely never be an end to COVID-19," Kenney says. He's making the point that we as a population will become more and more immune over time (as we all get sick). He says it will soon be time to learn to "live with" COVID.
