Oh look, a bunch of accounts named George with GAN-generated profile pics are tweeting identical tweets. #HolidayShenaniGANs

(GAN = "generative adversarial network", the technique used by thispersondoesnotexist.com to generate fake face pics)

cc: @ZellaQuixote Image
The spammy Georges are part of a larger network of 2500 newly-created accounts promoting cryptocurrency launchpad site @CeloLaunch. Between them, these 2250 accounts have just 25 unique first names and 50 unique last names. All have zero likes, zero followers, and 1 or 2 tweets. ImageImageImage
Most of these accounts have tweeted exactly twice: a duplicated tweet promoting @CeloLaunch, and a retweet of a December 12th @CeloLaunch tweet (a few missed either the duplicate tweet or the retweet). All tweets were sent (allegedly) via the Twitter web app. ImageImageImageImage

The 9 accounts promoting monsterfundrise(dot)com discussed in this previous thread have been shut down by Twitter, but 15 new ones have taken their place. As before, their tweets appear be being astroturfed, garnering far more retweets than likes.

cc: @ZellaQuixote
We downloaded the set of accounts amplifying the monsterfundrise tweets, and noticed that many of the other tweets they retweeted (particularly recent tweets from Punjab, Pakistan governor @ChMSarwar) also received more retweets than likes.
(some background info on the presence of more retweets than likes being a sign of astroturfing - average ratio is more than twice as many likes as retweets)

What do these eighteen blue-check accounts have in common (other than the profile graphics)? Answer: they're all old accounts that were recently renamed and redecorated, giving the appearance that they are official Baja California Sur government accounts.

cc: @ZellaQuixote Image
Some examples, accompanied by screenshots of each account's former appearance courtesy of Internet archive:

@Servicios122 (ID 49774815) was formerly @jess_noons
@prod121 (ID 142177657) was formerly @AmyOguntala
@secfin12 (ID 349157648) was formerly @lewaron ImageImageImage
Here are the 18 renamed verified accounts that are currently presenting themselves as affiliated with the government of Baja California Sur, Mexico. Most appear to have originally belonged to random US residents, and it is unclear at what point they gained their blue checkmarks. Image

Meet @DianaWi59797083, a newly-created pro-Trump account that can't seem to decide whether its name is Blake or Diana. It probably doesn't matter, since it's using a plagiarized profile pic that's been floating around the internet for years. #YouHadOneJob

cc: @ZellaQuixote
Compounding the hilarity, the first account to retweet @DianaWi59797083 is @JasonMAGA4ever, an account created a couple weeks ago. In what is doubtless a total coincidence, @JasonMAGA4ever is also using a stolen profile photo.
We weren't able to retrieve the early retweets of @JasonMAGA4ever's tweets, so the saga ends there for now, but we wouldn't be surprised if its Twitter career was bootstrapped with the aid of additional bogus #MAGA accounts with stolen pics.

Check out all the love and blessings from Miami, Florida, also known as Ohio and Texas. #YouHadOneJob #Spamtastic

cc: @ZellaQuixote Image
The duplicate "blessings from Miami, Florida" tweets came from a network of ten accounts created on Sept 4 2020. These accounts tweet on nearly identical schedules, and almost all of their tweets (96.3%) are replies. Tweets are (allegedly) sent via various Twitter web products. ImageImageImageImage
These ten accounts have sent a multitude of repeated tweets in their two weeks on Twitter. The repeated tweets are a mix of generic pleasantries, praise for various cryptocurrency accounts, and attacks on a Massachusetts social worker. Image

The denizens of 4chan's /pol/ continue to encourage the creation of fake Twitter accounts using GAN-generated face pics from thispersondoesnotexist(dot)com, so we rounded up a dozen more possible examples. #ASeriesOfUn4chanateEvents

cc: @ZellaQuixote Image
We downloaded recent replies containing various racial terms (some of them derogatory, which is why they're not listed in the graph title), and checked the accounts with 2020 creation dates for GAN-generated profile pics.
Image
We found twelve accounts with 2020 creation dates and GAN-generated facial features that look like possible 4chan troll accounts based on their selection of content and narratives. Image

Meet @JoJo4Fitness1, @JoJo4Fitness2, @JoJo4Fitness3, @JoJo4Fitness4, @JoJo4Fitness5, and @JoJo4Fitness6, a sextet of similar-looking Twitter accounts that hail from St. Louis, MO, home of the famous Golden Gate Bridge. #YouHadOneJob

cc: @ZellaQuixote
The six JoJo4Fitness<X> accounts are all newsbots, presently automated via dlvr(dot)it. All were created between September and December 2011 and have liked at most two tweets. They vary in volume and schedule (a bit surprising given their other similarities.)
They also vary in content - each bot pushes a different site or sites:

@JoJo4Fitness1 - HuffPo, NY Times
@JoJo4Fitness2 - The Guardian
@JoJo4Fitness3 - Fox News
@JoJo4Fitness4 - NBC, MO Health Dept
@JoJo4Fitness5 - Daily Mail
@JoJo4Fitness6 - India Times

At least 125 Twitter accounts attempted to tweet their fears that the Voting Rights Advancement Act constitutes a "direct attack on our elections" at their elected representatives. Not all of them have the "tagging the rep in question" part figured out.

cc: @ZellaQuixote
@ZellaQuixote The tweet about the Voting Rights Advancement Act is not the only shared piece of propaganda to be found on these accounts; many also tweeted this tweet about adoption agencies, for example. What's going on?
@ZellaQuixote The answer: heritageaction(dot)com, a right-wing website that offers prewritten tweets about various issues that you can tweet with the click of a button. Many of the accounts ignored the instruction to fill in their representative's Twitter handle. #YouHadOneJob

The answer to the question you never thought to ask: Yes, there are Stephen Miller pornbots. This is an appropriately short thread on them. #AltWankers

cc: @ZellaQuixote
@ZellaQuixote We ran a few searches we never really expected to run, and found a network of 11 Stephen Miller pornbots. Although they were created over a span of several years, with the most recent being from 2016, none have tweets prior to October 30th, 2019.
@ZellaQuixote Unsurprisingly, the Stephen Miller pornbots repeat tweets. They’re also not solely Stephen Miller pornbots, as becomes clear when one looks at the repeated tweets; like many other botnets, they piggyback on trends. Weirdly, they strip the # from hashtags. #YouHadOneJob.

Good guide for non-lawyers. NB:
“Second, had the Government offered any relevant reasons for the unusually long prorogation, the Court recognised that it would have been right to extend a great deal of latitude to the Government when assessing the adequacy of such reasons” 1/
ie. result was an own goal by the Govt. If constitutional impropriety doesn’t move supporters of the PM his lack of competence in perpetrating it should. This is a #YouHadOneJob mistake. Boris only had to Give a genuine reason in a statement verified by a statement of truth. 2/
How hard could that have been?

There are some newspaper editors & commentators & Cabinet ministers (among others) who, if their attention spans don’t run to reading the full judgment, notwithstanding its exemplary clarity, could at least try this 1,000 word summary.

We recently posted a thread about @MStenphen, a stolen valor account impersonating EUCOM deputy commander General Stephen Twitty. We ran across several more such accounts whilst perusing the followers of another account of interest (@WhytchesThyme.)

cc: @ZellaQuixote
@MStenphen @ZellaQuixote We found eight additional stolen valor accounts, as well as several other bogus-looking accounts (including an Anthony Scaramucci impersonator.) Are there more fakes lurking among those accounts' followers and followees?
@MStenphen @ZellaQuixote We ended up with 31415 total accounts by mapping the follow relationships of the initial set of fakes. 1663 (5.3%) look automated based on 24/7 schedule/use of automation services. Japanese accounts are rarer than they were among @MStenphen's followers.

We're outraged (OUTRAGED, I TELL YOU!) at the sheer degree of ineptitude shown by clone bot @OneOutragedDude at expressing outrage. #YouHadOneJob #OUTRAGE

cc: @ZellaQuixote
How does @OneOutragedDude manage to express an UTTERLY MEDIOCRE degree of outrage 24/7? This account uses automation service IFTTT to post all of its tweets (none of its content as of the time of this writing was tweeted via non-automated means.)
In what may be a failed attempt to convey outrage, @OneOutragedDude clones an odd lineup of accounts. Trump's Twitter account is the most frequent source of content; both of Bernie Sanders' accounts, various UK political and media accounts, AOC, and Elon Musk are frequent fliers.

Sometimes one has to seek out the spammy #Brexit bots, but sometimes the spammy Brexit bots make it easy by retweeting our threads. Meet @ChrisWill1337, an automated no-deal Brexit fan who wants you to know that the UK is going to leave the UK. #YouHadOneJob

cc : @ZellaQuixote
We downloaded the last 10 days worth of tweets from @ChrisWill1337, resulting in 13069 tweets (10043 retweets, 3026 original tweets.) This account's content is almost entirely automated, via two custom apps called "myCBot" and "myTweetPower".

As Ukraine's presidential election approaches, we checked for signs of possibly related automated Twitter activity based on a review of tweets containing "Poroshenko" or "Zelensky" in Ukrainian, Russian, or English (220001 tweets / 33420 accounts over 10 days.)

cc: @ZellaQuixote
(search used to obtain this dataset)

lang:en OR lang:uk OR lang:ru Poroshenko OR Пороше́нко OR Порошенко OR Zelensky OR Зеленский OR Зеленський
4.3% of the tweets about the candidates in Ukrainian are posted via apps/automation services. This percentage more than doubles for Russian (10.3%) and English (9.5%). Can we rule out this anomaly being an across-the-board difference in automation levels between languages?

The sentiment that Democrats are revolting against Nancy Pelosi has been floating around the last few days. Let's take a look at the associated Twitter activity.
We downloaded recent tweets containing the phrase "revolt against Pelosi" and filtered out the retweets of @tburages's tweet commenting on the phenomenon, leaving us with 1582 tweets from 1471 accounts.
172 of these 1471 accounts (11.7%) have default profile pics. This is unusually high - most datasets we look at have somewhere in the neighborhood of 3% - and likely indicates bot activity.
