My take on what the votes by the AMA House of Delegates on coverage mean. First, there is a lot more support for publicly financed coverage then ever before. Nearly half of the delegates, 47%, voted to delete @AmerMedicalAssn’s long-standing opposition to single payer. #AMAmtg
Because a narrow majority, 53% of delegates, voted again the Medical Students resolution to eliminate opposition to single payer, the @AmerMedicalAssn will continue to oppose it. For noW But the delegates are clearly divided, nearly down the middle, on it. #AMAmtg
.@ACPinternists’ resolution to change @AmerMedicalAssn policy to support offering everyone a public option received very strong support in testimony before the Reference Cmte and on the floor. The Ref Cmte recommended study of public options rather than adopting it. #AMAmtg

In 1965, #SCOTUS struck down a law which banned the use of “any drug, medicinal article or instrument for the purpose of preventing conception” in Griswold v. Connecticut.
That means in my lifetime, we have progressed from outright bans on #birthcontrol to affordable, accessible contraceptive care.
And now, those same forces are trying to take us back. Make no mistake, the wave of attacks on birth control, abortion care, #TitleX, and the #ACA are all connected.

This is a scheme in which the Obama administration collected less in taxes from health insurers than they were required to do under the Affordable Care Act, created a plan to pay insurers selling policies on the Exchange considerably more than originally projected,
and stiffed the United States Treasury on the money it was supposed to receive from the taxes. This diversion took place in spite of a statute that explicitly prohibited it. The consequence of the diversion of funds was to enrich insurers.

Smug @SecretaryCarson & the occupant of the @WhiteHouse are brutalizing our communities on an almost hourly basis. As we approach #PrideMonth, it is our collective responsibility to uplift our #trans brothers & sisters in the face of these cruel policies time.com/5595474/donald…
This hateful proposed rule will endanger the lives of trans people—particularly trans people of color— who disproportionately experience homelessness, putting them at risk of physical & sexual violence.
Carson unveiled this proposed rule ONE DAY after he sat before @RepWexton & assured us that #HUD would not eliminate the 2012 Equal Access Rule, which bars federal housing discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity

After failing to repeal the #ACA in Congress in 2017, in 2/2018, 18 @GOP AG's & 2 GOP Governors Filed a Lawsuit to Repeal the #ACA in the U.S. Northern District of TX. 2/
.@GOP officials claim since #ACA’s individual mandate fine was repealed in 2017 tax law, the mandate can no longer be considered a “tax.” b/c of this change, they argue the mandate is now unconstitutional & the entire ACA must be struck down.

These are their names. 3/

@realDonaldTrump Crazy?
You also say Dems are "for crime," & "high taxes." THAT'S crazy. They're for border security THAT WORKS, & a FAIR taxation system.

Here's an Iowan who thinks you're wrong to say we're 'full.' Across Iowa and rural America, we need immigrants.

@realDonaldTrump Here's what's crazy.

Experts say 1.1 million fewer people in the U.S. have #health coverage due to efforts to undermine the #ACA through the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017.

Hopefully voters will see the light before 2020.

@realDonaldTrump Here's what's crazy.
You said you wouldn't touch #SocialSecurity, #Medicaid, or #Medicare, but your 2020 budget proposal cuts all 3.

Your YUGE deficit gives an EXCUSE for what GOP has wanted to do all along - cut what they like to call "entitlements."

#Alabama, #Ohio, #Missouri, and #Georgia have begun the @GOP's orchestrated attack on women with restrictive abortion laws.

Make NO mistake this is NOT about protecting life. It is a hostile GOP and their #WarOnWomen restricting #WomensReproductiveRights and #WomensHealth.
Highly restrictive abortion laws are not associated with lower abortion rates! Whether legal or prohibited the number of abortions taking place remains relatively unchanged. Highly restrictive abortion laws simply prevent SAFE abortions.
In countries where abortion is completely banned or permitted only to save the woman’s life or preserve her physical health, only 1 in 4 abortions were safe; whereas, in countries where abortion is legal on broader grounds, nearly 9 in 10 abortions were done safely.

The GOP is still determined to end access to #healthcare for millions of Americans like me with #cancer and other life-threatening #PreExistingConditions.

Trump joins #antivaxxers to attack #Obamacare thinkprogress.org/trump-anti-vax… via @thinkprogress
Also, before the #ACA (also known as #Obamacare, which is a law not insurance) became law, women paid twice as much as men for health insurance, pregnancy was a #PreExistingCondition, mammograms and PAP tests were out-of-pocket expenses and 60M Americans were uninsured.
The #ACA has expanded #Medicaid in many states, created the healthcare marketplace which shows people a range of options within their states for affordable healthcare & it has saved millions of lives.
ACA will still be law after #M4A because it's essential healthcare protection.

@Priyanka_Dayal What is confirmed here is that @UHC “put the bottom line above [Kate Weissman] as a patient.” @Priyanka_Dayal, you have helped place health payers on notice. Denials for proton therapy and violations of ERISA will not stand. The status quo is unsustainable and #change is coming.
@Priyanka_Dayal @UHC Very smart person right here 👇🏻
@Priyanka_Dayal @UHC Most painful abt certain aspects of the piece is attempt to provide legitimacy to insurance practices that violate the law & deny millions of valid health claims. A Really Deep Dive into #MedicareForAmerica: acasignups.net/19/05/02/reall…
So yesterday, @RosaDelauro & @RepSchakowsky re-introduced their #Med4America universal healthcare coverage bill. It’s important to note that BOTH of them are members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, and Schakowsky is also a co-sponsor of the House #MFA bill. 2/
@rosadelauro @RepSchakowsky In other words, this is NOT a battle between “progressives” and “centrists”. #Med4America is *very* progressive…while also, in my view, simply being more practical than the “pure” #MFA bills. It starts out as a robust Public Option for 2 yrs, but then becomes MUCH more. 3/

Sen. Kamala Harris asked Barr point blank why he didn't review underlying evidence, despite making a charging decision.

This is one of the best opinion pieces That truly highlights the need for education about putting insurance in it's proper place and educating people on what options are available to help them save money on their healthcare. By @DavidBalatHC

thehill.com/opinion/health…
High Deductible Health Plans HDHP are only a bad thing when a person is uninformed about other more affordable options to pair them with. The $3800 bill could have been avoided by using services such as @GreenImagingTx The imaging could gave cost as low as $250
The example used in the article lives on Broomall, PA which is less than an hour fron the closest @GreenImagingTx center in Salem, NJ so it could have cost the price of the MRI and a tank of gas. Which would be maybe another $30-40 topping off at $290

CORRECTED HEADLINE:
“Nurse and freshman member of Congress introduces important bill to significantly improve ACA until universal coverage can be passed in the future”

#ACA2 isn’t an *alternative* to MFA, it’s an important stopgap to improve things in the short term.
#ACA2 is desperately needed for the next few years REGARDLESS of whether we eventually move to MFA, Med4Am or some other universal coverage program.
ACA2 could be fully implemented pretty much immediately, possibly even retroactively for some provisions. MFA or even Med4Am (which I support) will take several years to ramp up, so at least some ACA2 provisions would still be needed in the meantime.

🗣 THREAD: A Kinda, Sorta Deep Dive into the 2020 NBPP! acasignups.net/19/04/19/kinda…
The #NBPP2020 is a long, wonky document from CMS which basically lays out the rules for the 2020 #ACA Open Enrollment period. Most of it is basic stuff like setting the dates (Nov. 1 - Dec. 15th) and the like, but it also makes some tweaks to the subsidy formula and so forth. 1/
As you can imagine, some of these changes are pretty benign, but others will have big implications for #ACA enrollees in 2020. There's a total of 17 items on the list, a few of which I actually don't understand well enough to comment on, but let's take a look at the rest! 2/

A parallel. In 1993, Hillary chaired a task force to devise a healthcare plan so every American would be covered. It took till 2010 for Obama to get the #ACA (which is STILL under attack.)17 yrs. AOC introduces the #GreenNewDeal with URGENCY. We only have 12 yrs. says the UN.
This time around, the planet is at stake. Climate change is the greatest existential threat to life as we know it. It’s already here. We don’t have time to waste. Emissions must be cut in half. This comprehensive re-shaping of economic & social justice tied to the environment
is as broad-thinking as Hillary’s idea for healthcare. When you are a woman with power who takes your role to serve seriously, you come up with these bold, sweeping, societal changes for the good of all. Props to .@AOC for risking it, so her generation & my grandkids can breathe.

#Republicans must now own their administration’s effort to destroy protection for preexisting conditions. nytimes.com/2019/03/27/us/…
The #ACA is critical to #RhodeIsland’s fight against the opioid crisis. The law has helped thousands of RIers get health insurance through #Medicaid expansion, and guarantees coverage for substance use treatment.

.@realDonaldTrump’s effort to overturn the #ACA is directly counterproductive to our work to curb this epidemic.

I am scheduled for my 3rd surgery since December on Thursday.
Please do me a favor and promise to call your reps and senators and tell them you support and need the #ACA/#Obamacare and they only have your vote if they reject Trump's efforts to kill it.
Here's a thread on why:
1/
Many Americans think the #ACA/#Obamacare is insurance.
It is not.
The #ACA is a law governing insurance companies & forcing them to cover women & people with #PreExistingConditions.
The #ACA also says women cannot be forced to pay more than men for insurance.
#ProtectOurCare
2/
The #ACA/#Obamacare also provides for children 26 and under to be covered under their parents' insurance plans.
The ACA also created the healthcare marketplace, which provides tax subsidies for those unable to pay full-price for health insurance.

Another day. Another attempt by the Trump administration to repeal the #ACA.

After Rs campaigned on protecting the ACA’s pre-existing condition coverage, the administration has now taken the position that the entire ACA — preexisting condition protections and all — should go.
What does that mean for the American people?

❌ No more Medicaid expansion,
❌ No more guaranteed coverage for mental health and maternity care, and
❌ No more financial assistance to help people afford coverage.

Just to name a few.
The ACA is the law of the land. It’s working in #RhodeIsland and nationwide. The #Trump administration ought to accept its duty to defend it.

Trump’s DOJ, enabled by the GOP who allowed the #TexasFoldEm lawsuit to happen in the first place, just said that they want the ENTIRE ACA scrapped.
Meanwhile, tomorrow, @HouseDemocrats will roll out #ACA 2.0.
DON’T *EVER* CLAIM THE PARTIES ARE THE SAME.
acasignups.net/19/03/24/its-o…
As I keep pointing out (and as @RonBrownstein JUST WROTE ABOUT a few days ago), while it’s fine to discuss & debate #MFA vs #Med4America, etc, THE #ACA IS STILL UNDER ATTACK. MFA/etc won’t happen until 2022 at the earliest. The ACA is under attack NOW.

theatlantic.com/politics/archi…
REMINDER: If the entire ACA were to be repealed:
—16 million people would lose Medicaid
—9 million people would lose subsidized exchange coverage
—850,000 would lose BHP coverage in MN & NY
...and that’s just for starters.

📣 THREAD: On Saturday, @SpeakerPelosi announced the @HouseDemocrats will be unveiling “sweeping legislation to protect people w/pre-existing conditions & lower healthcare costs” tomorrow. I’m 99.9% certain this refers to #HR5155, introduced last year: acasignups.net/19/03/24/its-o… 1/
@SpeakerPelosi @HouseDemocrats Assuming this is accurate, #HR5155 would include 15 provisions to REPAIR and STRENGTHEN the #ACA.

All of these are important, but some would have a more obvious impact than others. The two biggest are 1) removing the 400% FPL subsidy cap and 2) beefing up the subsidy formula.
2/
@SpeakerPelosi @HouseDemocrats So, how much would making these first two changes reduce premiums? Let’s take a look!
